First Day Driving

Abby got her learner's permit today. Now it's up to Jennifer and me to give her 50 hours of driving "instruction" so she can get her license. I know it's a cliché, but they really do grow up too fast.

Making Sausage

We have friends with a sausage maker. We have pork. The rest is history... http://static.squarespace.com/static/5493c0c3e4b0496d8273a18c/5494d36fe4b01ce0b479aef6/5494ea87e4b01ce0b47bb289/1419045511413/VideoPlayer.swf?format=original http://static.squarespace.com/static/5493c0c3e4b0496d8273a18c/5494d36fe4b01ce0b479aef6/5494ea87e4b01ce0b47bb289/1419045511413/VideoPlayer.swf?format=original http://static.squarespace.com/static/5493c0c3e4b0496d8273a18c/5494d36fe4b01ce0b479aef6/5494ea87e4b01ce0b47bb289/1419045511413/VideoPlayer.swf?format=original http://static.squarespace.com/static/5493c0c3e4b0496d8273a18c/5494d36fe4b01ce0b479aef6/5494ea87e4b01ce0b47bb289/1419045511413/VideoPlayer.swf?format=original Thanks to Pete and Kathy Prati for making this an annual event. Anyone want any sausage?

Rollin’ On The River

Saturday after my premiere radio show (on Premiere Radio Networks no less) Jennifer and I decided to celebrate by kayaking down the Petaluma river. It's not really a river - it's a tidal slough - but it's very calm and there's little traffic. It was a perfect day. http://static.squarespace.com/static/5493c0c3e4b0496d8273a18c/5494d36fe4b01ce0b479aef6/5494ea87e4b01ce0b47bb289/1419045511413/VideoPlayer.swf?format=original These pictures and video are from …

I Glasses

Happy St. Patrick's Day! A number of people commented on the fact that I was wearing eyeglasses in the spy cam picture.

I wear contact lenses during the day. I've worn glasses since I was in fourth grade. I am extremely near sighted - blind without the contacts - and now as I age I'm getting far sighted too. The contacts are monofocal, but I have trifocal glasses and I've been wearing them more and more at home for reading and computing. It's much easier than trying to strain to read without them. I suppose in a few years I'll have to wear reading glasses with my contacts. -sigh-

Unfortunately, Abby has inherited my eyes. She had strabismus - a lazy inward turning eye - which we corrected when she was three with a patch. She wears glasses for farsightedness now. Her eye no longer turns in unless she's really tired and not wearing her glasses. I had the same problem when I was a kid. It was undetected until much later, however.

I remember in sixth or seventh grade the eye doctor telling my mom it would take surgery to correct it. It doesn't really matter, he said, it's not like he's going to be in TV or the movies. Seemed like a pretty long shot I suppose, although I remember resenting the comment so I must have had some idea even back then.

As you've probably noticed, my eyes still cross a little, especially when I'm tired or the camera is too close. I guess I'll never make it in the movies! At least Abby still has a chance.

Walk and Blog

A very productive day - got a column finished and another started. That's three columns this weekend! A new world record. I also had "special time" with Abby. We walked into town, went to the comic book store and the book store, had a sandwich at the bookstore café and walked home. It was open mike night at the café and we listened to four or five singers. It's amazing how many talented musicians there are, and how few get the recognition they deserve. I wonder if everyone has something they can excel at. That seems to be true. Unfortunately the mass media has exalted a handful of talented people, when so many are right next to us completely ignored.

I also installed and have begun configuring new blog software. This program, called Greymatter is all in Perl and lives on my server. It has some very nice features and eliminates my dependence on blogger. Once I get the templates working right, I'll move all the old content to it. You can give it a test drive here.

Date Night

Amazing. Both kids are sleeping over with friends last minute. Looks like Jennifer and I will actually get to go out. I think we'll see Traffic. We've got a lot of catching up to do before the Oscars!
