iPodder iSsues

If you use iPodder to subscribe to my podcast audio, there is a bug in the program which will cause it to fail to download anything new (with an error 301). iPodder users should use the following URLs until the program is fixed:

KFI-> http://feeds.feedburner.com/kfi
TLR -> http://feeds.feedburner.com/tlr

In the long run it’s better to point to the shortcut URLs, http://leoville.tv/podcasts/kfi and http://leoville.tv/podcasts/tlr since these are always guaranteed to point to the right place (in case I stop using Feedburner, for instance), but for now this workaround will do the trick.

As far as I know none of the other podcast programs have this problem. I currently recommend iPodderX for the Macintosh, and Doppler for Windows.

UPDATE: Thanks to Eric from Feedburner (read the comments) I’ve been able to fix the issue, so you shouldn’t have to change your URLs. Apparently I should have made the redirects TEMP instead of PERMANENT. Who knew? This computer stuff is so complicated!

  1. Hi Leo. Eric from FeedBurner here. For the HTTP redirect, I think you’re sending a 301 (moved permanently) instead of a 302 (move temporarily). I’m guessing it’s probably the temp redirect that you want—that gives you more options down the road in case you’re not happy with FeedBurner. Many clients, when they receive a 301, forget the original URL and only use the new redirected URL.
    Also, we don’t have it live on the site yet, but we will be offering a “graceful shutdown” mode on FeedBurner so that if you don’t want to use it anymore, we’ll redirect any requests for your FeedBurner feed to the URL of your choosing. No one has actually requested this feature, but we suspect that there are people that don’t give FeedBurner a try because they don’t want to be “locked in”.
    Anyway, thanks for using FeedBurner and please let me know if you have any suggestions or comments. Feedback coming from you would be especially valuable!

  2. Leo, I just got the podcast of your latest shows (Jan 2005) and I noticed in the “song name” field, you’re still naming them with 2004 (although the filename says 2005).
    FYI – If you named your shows starting with KFI (or TLR) instead of 2005 so they sort in the “K” (or “T”) section of audio players not the “2” section it might make it easier for people to find. I know it’d make it easier for me 🙂 http://garylapointe.com/mypointe/pointes/001000.php

  3. Doh! Thanks for the fix, Eric! I’ve changed them all to temp redirects. I had no idea that would make such a big difference.
    Love Feedburner – thanks!

  4. Ack! The new link got me hour 3 of Sunday’s show & today’s TLR, but won’t get the other 2 hours, which I downloaded manually. I loved iPodder up until this point…

  5. I just wanted to thank you for making these shows available. I live in Windsor, ON Canada and it’s so nice to listen in my car now. I have a little 128MB Creative Nomad MuVo USB MP3 player, and plug it into the Aux.-In on my car stereo through the headphone plug to listen to your show and others that I get from using iPodderX on my iBook now. : )
    Thank you for adding more pleasure to my driving..
