Call for Canada

The-New-Call-for-HelpersI‘m very happy to report that I’ve agreed to host a daily show for G4/TechTV Canada starting later this summer. We’ll produce the show here in Toronto. I’ll fly up one week a month to shoot. It looks like the format will be very similar to Call for Help, and, yes, we’ll be taking calls. Once we get the web site up and running there will be a place for you to submit your questions as before.
Pictured at left, my co-hosts (and actual Canadians) the lovely Jelena Mihajlovic and the geeky Andy Walker.

More details to come. Stay tuned. Now we’re off to see the Jays and the Dodgers. I’ll post pictures.

  1. Welcome to canada! we love you up here and im sooo happy your coming. someone posted that this is a loss to move to a Canadian channel, i think its a great win. i hope that face isn’t one of disappointment about coming to Canada 😉 Will you have an audience cause if so.. im there! (live in toronto)

  2. I always regretted having Tech TV Canada as in Canada we never get the same channels as the Americans. The CRTC (Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commision) always re-brands them as “Canada” changes the format a bit and overlaps on some shows with canadian content. Ex. Bravo TV Canada, Discovery Canada, Tech Tv Canada and about 50 others (Its rare to see the original american channel here in Canada). Well for once us Canadians are getting something that the Americans can not and this makes me happy. I loved Call for Help and was going to cancel G4techtv Canada until this was announced, now I have a reason to pay Shaw Cable my $1.99 per month for it! Great News and I know I will be watching.

  5. Leo, I’m sure that you have heard this a plethora of times, but…
They can do what they want to G4techtv and call it “taking it to the next level” but cancelling Call for Help and not keeping you onboard will definitely cost viewership. Other than Screen Savers there is nothing left worth viewing. I hope you are correct and the new show will air in the States. Best of Luck

  6. Future CBC article ‘Canada Customs and Immigration revealed an astounding surge in new residents moving form the US who all put LeoCruel and unusual entertainment punishment’ as their reason for leaving the USA. In other news, Shaw and Rogers have both noticed a strong increase in digital cable subscriptions. No word on whether there is any connection between the two reports. ‘
I am delirious to hear this news, and may actually decide to get TTV again when the local phone company debuts their TV service in my area. I want very much to feel sorry for my southern neighbors, but part of me feels this might be a beginning of the revenge owed for us being left behind in so many ways. I hope that Leo gets around to a visit in Winnipeg while he is in Canada, as I would love to buy him a drink and thank him for all the great things he’s done.

  7. Leo,
USA’s loss, and Canada’s gain. I’ve stopped watching the G4TT station. On one show I watched they had these two bimbos talk about absolutely nothing, and all the other shows were game commercials. Even poor Patrick looked lost on The Screensavers (okay, maybe that’s my disgruntled viewpoint). Anyway, you will always land on top…Leo’s are known for that trait, lol
    take care and good luck

  8. Hi Leo,
I canceled all of my newsletters from G4TechTV, and will not watch the network again, unless or until they beg you to come back.
You Canadians take care of Leo, eh?
Sign me: “Lost in the wilderness in Indiana without Leo”

  9. Facts about Canada:
    * The sharing of music is legal
    * Smoking pot is legal
    * Leo is coming
So now, a Canadian could be downloading and listening to music, smoking pot, and watching Leo. LOL…

  10. Wow, that’s a switch. Most of the time us Canadians lose our TV personalitys to the US. It’s not often that we get one coming to Canada. I have to hand it to you Leo. You must really love doing this stuff. To spend a week away from your family to shoot the program shows alot about you. I hope you have fun here in T.O. and maybe i’ll run into you on the street.
And if you’re wondering how you’ll get by in Toronto, all you need to know is 3 words…Go Leafs Go!!! Just learn those words and you’re set.

  11. Good News!!!! I E-mailed comcast (damn them!) and told them what they had done to there consumer base (shrinking it from computer users/gamers to just gamers) was stupid. they took my suggestion to the programming department. YES! hopefully they’le pipe in the Canadian Shows… Do they use NTSC there? hmmm and Yay.

  12. I knew they couldn’t keep you down. .Flying out to Canada all the time sounds like a pain in the butt. I hope the moneys good. You should get them to use the studio on york steet. I hear it will be available in July. LOL. Oh and another thing “G4Techtv really does suck”.

  13. Awesome news Leo! I was VERY disappointed with the Comcast takeover. The axe dropping on great TTV programs (and staff) to make room for boring game adds and puppets was a travesty. Happy to hear you’ll be up here in Toronto making new shows. Sure the monthly flights might be a hassle but look on the bright side,.. Canadian beer!!

  14. Leo, I am thrilled for you..as the dozens of comments before me..also sad for us in the U.S. Count me in on the droves of watchers that have tuned out G4….
So, to the Canadians, and to you, Leo, congratulations and a suggestion to add travel safety tips to your Call for Help show…..hehe….you will be a master of them as well as tech..

  15. Great news. I’m a Phoenician for Arizona but had the opportunity to live and work in Toronto (TO for short) for a while. I really enjoyed the city and the people. All were friendly and courteous. I especially was impressed on how clean TO was being a major metro city as well as fact that I could roam the streets at night with little fear of safety.
I’m also glad to see that you are still being considered as talent for G4/Tech TV. I always look forward to your commentary on the various products and such. It’s only a shame that I can’t get the channel back here in sunny AZ. Good luck!

  16. WOW!!!! What a great break for we Canadians. I quess I’ll keep my subscription to G4TechTV Canada now. I hope too that you will be successful in shopping the show internationally so our American cousins can see it too.

  17. Well it is great that Leo is back even though I will never see him even if it comes to the United States, which it probably wont. Time Warner just got rid of the G4Techtv channel where I live because Comcast bought the channel so I don’t even get 90 seconds of Leo on the Screen Savers, a show that Leo really should be co-hosting anyway.

  19. Wow looking at all the comments looks like I’m not the only one who is sad that Techtv is slowly starting to slide away into “HypeTV” XPlay, TSS, and Unscrewed are the only things I find time to catch now (with some Anime Unleashed sometimes)and the rest of it is *hype this game* or *unless your playing this game your a loser* and I really miss the ability to search out fixes for problems with the possibility of calling in to ask for help. Oh well this is TV and it is the money that talks not the fans..anyway Congrats on getting the show Leo and I hope my Canadian buddies treat you good…and send me copies of the show lol

  20. LEO, LEO, LEO!
Congrads on coming to Canada! I look forward to your knowaladge of Tech, (We REALLY need some good computer hosts up here.) The only one thing bad about your move is Patrick Norton, Sarah Lane, Kevin Rose, Yoshi, Jessica Corbin, Cat, ALL of the OLD Techtv’s Lab Rats, Bert Monroy or Alex Lindsey won’t be coming with you. Oh well you can’t have everything!
Good luck and I will be watching!!!! 🙂

  21. Congratulations Leo…
    EXCELLENT,
Wish we could see you at home too.
Canadians take care of Leo. We didn’t and shame on us.
G4 does not deserve to have a host like Leo Laporte.
All G4 cares is to get our kids to buy games and stay stupid so G4 can get richer and richer.
I am so happy for you Leo. You are and you will be my great teacher forever. You thought me a lot and I do appreciate.

  22. Yeah! As others have said “Live Studio Audience” I live in TO and would love to go.
To the guy who said Pot is leagal here. No it isn’t, that legisation to make it a fine for low ammounts was scrapped due to this months federal election.
Congrats Leo on the new position and welcome to Toronto.

  23. Wow! leo thats great welcome to canada!!!!!! i live an hour from toronto and am glad your’e
coming up here!!! i am so glad you stuck with us your loyal fans!!!! HEY GUYS GUESS WHAT……LEO’S BACK ON THE AIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. I can’t wait!
I live here in Ontario just North of T.O. and it is an surprise to hear
that you are doing a TV show here.
I have watched TechTV when it was ZDTV with Leo on Call For Help and The Screen Savers and you have helped me so much with understanding computers.
    Thank you very much.
I would love to meet you in person and get your autograph.
If you get this please E-mail me back if you have the time.
    Thanks a lot!

  25. Leo.
I have the perfect duo to introduce your new show in Canada — Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis, These two guys — from the Great White North — could sit there and introduce the callers and then drink some beer. It would be perfect….. Get a few moose to walk across the screen as you lambast the next Microsoft vulernability, and your show will be a thunderous success.

  26. Hey Leo,
This is great…I mean really! I can’t believe what I’m reading that you’ll be working out of TO for your new show.
I hope (and am confident) that you’ll find us Canucks as tech savvy as your southern brethren. We’re all the same right!
As far as your show being aired in the US, I’m curious to know if once this is well underway, will Comcast be able to ignore the fact that you have a commodity that will be wanted in millions of American homes.
I think I’ll buy a few DVD burners, bootlegs will be popular….
    Welcome to Canada Leo….
    Hey, Leo for Prime Minister!!!

  27. Pure GOLD baby! Pure GOLD! I just re-ordered TechTV **cough** errr I mean G4TechTV. This is unbelievable! I can’t wait! Funny thing is, there are more G4TechTV subscribers in the US than there are Canadians. I guess they have to up Canadian content back to 35% after they axed just about everything else. WOOHOO!!!

  28. There is a way americans can get the show…if you buy a bell expressvu satellite dish on ebay or something and then get “the card”…its a card that gives you all the channels, this is illegal but everyone does it, you can watch everything…Here in canada everyone does the same thing for Directv..we dont have direct tv up here so there is a huge black market where people sell and install directv dishes with “the card”…..
But Who knows, you guys get judgement day and that is Canadian.

  29. If theres someone to thank aside from Leo, its G4TechTV Canada for listening to their E-Mails and actually understanding the dedicated viewers Leo himself brings in. I live in Toronto so im good (cant wait for the studio audience) but I think this is the first step to getting Leo airtime back in the states. I cant understand why a TECH station (g4TECHtv) wouldnt want him. Canadians email the station and thank them for actually listening, I just hope they can pay him close to what he was getting in the states because he deserves it.

  30. Why steal TV? Just buy the dish and legitimately subscribe to the channels and set up autopay on your credit card. Don’t plug the phone line in to the back and they’ll never know you are watching from outside of Canada. This is called grey market. Contrary to what you think not “everyone does it”!

  31. I hope Leo’s new show ends up showing here in the US somehow. I’m still catching Screen Savers on G4TechTV nearly daily, and that’s the only thing left worth watching on that station right now. If it wasn’t for the fact that G4TechTV is packaged with Fox Sports World as part of the sports package with Cox Communications, I’d let my subscription to the service go.

  32. When I found TechTV Canada a few years ago on my TV, I parked my remote on the coffee table!
Granted TTVCa was missing some of the US programming, and at times I envied some of what I was missing by living in the Great White North…
NOW… it is WE who have the edge!
Thanks Leo for coming back to TechTV Canada!
Now if we can get Cat and Roger to take the commute…
Maybe even the TSS crew…. THAT would be something!
A WONDERFUL early Canada-Day gift to say the least!
    VOTE LEO FOR PRIME-MINISTER!

  33. Posted by: zyp at June 11, 2004 04:26 AM – Smoking Pot in Canada is legal
That’s not true. Small Amounts of Pot may be decriminalized in the near future and you may get away with it more so than in the US, but its not Legal and far from it.
Posted by: Mark at June 12, 2004 03:27 PM – Everyone steals TV
Not True, only people who are too cheap to pay for TV do it, alot of people do it the grey market ways and subscribe through a US broker, People who don’t pay are just stealing it cause they are cheap and want Free Movie Channels and Free PPV. OR you can just subscribe to a regular Canadian TV provider like Shaw, Rogers, Etc..
Also I have seen several things about people coming to Canada for free health care…Our health care system is falling apart due to higher costs, please don’t come here to make it worse and more in debt – we have long enough waiting lists as it is already without Americans coming and clogging it up more!
    back on topic…
I am glad Leo is coming to Canada, This is the only reason I haven’t cancelled G4techtv yet here in Canada.

  34. I hate to say it Leo, but have you ever thought of doing a talk show? I certainly love tech stuff, but its a niche that doesn’t seem to pay off even for the cream of the crop. I never watch them myself. but perhaps it’s time to cast aside your likes in favor of what you do best. Talking to people.

  35. I’ve been a constant viewer since “The Site” and I’ve always thought you were one of the best things on TV. Period. Your strong point is your amazing versatility; whether you’re talking to a computer geek or a world-class scientist, you have insight and mastery of the subject that I’ve never seen equaled by any of the store-front dummies that pass for interviewers these days. You can talk to an 15 year old about pop culture and a seventy-year old scientist with equal aplomb— and you can even dance! You never cease to amaze me. People like you don’t come around very often — Steve Allen and Johnny Carson come to mind. You embody quality television, a goal that in this strictly profit-oriented culture is sometimes lost. If it turns out that your program is unavailable here, it is to America’s great loss.
    Cheers,

  36. Congrats on your new Show Leo…TTV and especialy call for help,Took a person like myself with no PC exp at all . And taught me the in’s and outs of the box.I had watched TTV 2 years before I ever owned a pc,This was back when Kate and Leo were together. But when I finaly bought one I knew how to use it-and how it worked. Now this year I replaced that Pc with one I built myself-Thanks to u Leo and your staff. I wish Leo and the staff of TTV all the best in these troubled times .

  37. Leo, I hope the show will make it to North American somehow. TechTV isn’t the same without you. I tried to stomach “Screensavers” today. Patrick and Kevin had a great time laughing/poking fun at a caller over a modification question that he had. I immediately found myself wondering how you would have handled the same caller–what he wanted to do sounded a bit impractical, but I just can’t picture you laughing/poking fun at someone during a response.

  38. Ok can you teel us who we can badger, bribe or beg to get newletters or tapes of your CFH Show. I cant even bear TSS eeven for your sweet 90 sec self of all the gaming talk on it anymore.
I am serious and would pay for a transcription or newletters.
If you have any nibbles, for the sell back here just let us know to se can send our support too! congrats on landing on your feet yet again!

  39. “With any luck we’ll be able to sell the finished product back into the US. We’ll also be offering it worldwide and to cable video-on-demand outlets. I’m sure you’ll be able to see it in the States by this Fall.”
Posted by: Leo at June 10, 2004 07:52 PM
I don’t think anyone saw this. It got lost in the 100’s of comments. Us people in the states will still get it you guys. 🙂

  40. Hey Leo,
What is this G4 stuff. Looks like a bunch of no know marketing money men got a hold of thescreensavers website and there is so much movement on the screen it reminds me of bugs running around in the cabinet but you can’t see what you are looking for because of the distractions. The changes may be ok for 14 year olds and artsy fartsy web kids starting out but it says only one thing to me, buy, buy buybuybuybuybuy. At least on the old site the adverts were manageable. This is not for the pro but the amateur kid market.
Let them know that the new web site sucks rocks. Yeah and where are the show notes did they cut the staff too. Looks like a corporate take over to me. They didn’t out source the help desk to India did they? From the looks of it they just cut the whole staff. Are they going to get their stuff together anytime soon? If not what are the alternative shows? BTW I don’t own a TV but get all my media through the web like from streams. The one I watch besides your feeds is wwitv.com for all my news and stuff but friends have cable and sometimes tivo your show, without the every two minute commercials- which are the same btw-, but your two minute content is very good and the links are excellent. It is tomorrow, you know.

  41. Thank you GOD for send Leo and Call for help to Canada. I’m a Torontonian myself and i was wondering, how bout have an audience for Call for Help? Is the show going to be shoot by the building with the big TECH TV sign near the Ex? I’m gonna start messing with my computer soon, just so I can “Call for Help”.

  42. Congrats on coming back there Leo – I’ve got the story on my Blog and it’s great to see you back again. I’m hoping that you’ll look seriously at streaming your show, like Dave Chalk does so you don’t have to worry about the gaming channel caring your show. I remember when you interviewed Dave when TechTV came to Canada two years ago and I first saw the screensavers.
Don’t forget to have Cat Schultz on the show once in a while too!

  43. Hello,
    Good news about Leo’s return!
Believe it or not there are Americans who like Canadian TV and subscribe to one of the Canadian DBS systems. It is possible to get a system and pay the DBS provider for your subscription through a broker in Canada. Since you are paying for the service you are not stealing it.
One provider I know of is Global Communications.

  44. Leo: Since TechTV became G4TechTV, I’ve wandered away from watching “Screen Savers”. I always enjoyed the show when you were on it live. I miss Call for Help as well. I’ve been in computing for over 45 years, and always managed to learn something new from the two programs. Have you caught the Internet comic strip “User Friendly” by Illiad this past week. Great Commentary on G4TV! http://userfriendly.org
    Enjoy your mini vacation!

  45. This is GRRRRRRRREAT! as Tony the Tiger would say. I was about to cancel my G4TechTV Canada subscription when, thankfully, I saw this page. While you’re at it, why not bring the whole gang from TSS up here as well … they will be more than welcome.
I really feel bad for our american friends but someone at Comcast is bound to eventually smell the coffee when they start losing viewers by the bucket. Hit their pocket book and then watch their reaction …
Leo is definitively TV Worth Watching!

  46. Leo,
Hi, from rocket land. My friend Chuck saw you in Dallas at Charlie Ergan’s show where he reminded you of my appearance on TSS with my large scale rockets (you thought my fireplace was also a rocket….but I digress).
As I am involved in IP based television, are you going to try to do something over the web? I sure miss the great mix of talent that was assembled at TechTV and I have told my old cronies at Echostar and at Comcast they have kind of screwed up in my personal opinion.
Keep up the great work and we miss seeing you here.
    Greg
