Thanks, David!

Thanks to New York Times columnist (and good friend) David Pogue for his heartfelt column in the Thursday New York Times Circuits section. [free registration required – but it’s worth it]
David got it right with one exception. He writes:

In fact, G4TechTV is indeed in negotiations with Mr. Laporte about an increased role at the new network.

He’s quoting a company spokesman, not me. I am not “in negotiations” with G4. We have a cordial relationship, but if they have plans for an increased role for me at the channel they’re keeping it a secret. And you couldn’t characterize our infrequent conversations as negotiations in any way.

I am, however, talking with a number of people about new TV shows. I’m hopeful something will come of that. I’ll keep you posted when there’s something more to say.

  1. Leo, you know damn well you could start your own cable channel, with the friends and following you have (TechTVReloaded?). Do it Leo…..you KNOW it’s just sitting there waiting for you!!!

  2. It is not kind, and probably illegal to copy an entire copyrighted article from another Web site and “paste it in.”
That is why you see links to stories, not copies of stories. It is OK to copy a sentence, or a phrase, and comment on it, like Leo did, but copying the article falls outside of “Fair Use.”

  3. I would be willing to Pay money for an interactive web presence or cable TV show that involved Leo, Patrick and the rest of our beloved TechTV gang.
Subscription service? No problem and I come from the school of thought where anything legal should be free on the net.
I don’t want to live without what once was TechTV.
    Someone HAS to do something!!!!
I have been working on my bands album of late so I wasn’t aware of the merger. I turned on TechTV the other day and freaked out. What was this GARBAGE?????? Ok so now I know, and now I lament.
What a tragic day in history. If anyone organizes a legitimate protest or petition please feel free to contact me.
Really …. someone HAS to do something.

  4. After trying to find something on the G4 lineup to watch or on the new website disguised as the “MTV techie” version of a webswite, I’ve given up. I won’t even discuss the how much I miss the content from TechTV. I thought that G4 just didn’t care about us boomers out there, but now see that they are searchless, contentless, uniqueless (an oxymoron?), and definitely a classless act. Are we to continue being choiceless? Please save us from the mediocrity passing as “games, gear, gadgets, and gigabytes.”
Leo, whatrever you do on TV, I’ll be watching. Go for it!!!

  5. Let me rephrase that statement for you, Tim…
It is not right to copy an entire article or copyrighted work and NOT GIVE CREDIT. The mere posting of it for those who are paranoid or just dislike registering for things (and essentially signing up for more junk email and spam) isn’t wrong, nor illegal. To not give credit (including a link) is another story.
However… I diagree with the “Fair Use” argument for this just as I do for the argument against p2p networks and MP3 trading. The whole copyright infringement laws protect the copyright holder from others capitalizing on their works by selling, distributing, or any other FOR PROFIT method. With that said… people selling copyrighted works or claiming them as their own should all get the book thrown at them. Beyond that, the situation with the RIAA only proves 2 things: 1) They don’t care about anything but their pocket books — not even the artists. 2) That lawsuits have gotten WAAAAAAY out of hand. :/
Anyhow… Leo — we all support you 100%. I hope something really great comes your way and that you and the rest of the CFH and TSS staff can move to another network and watch Comcast’s beloved G4 die a miserable death. TechTV doesn’t deserve that fate, nor do the staff members who have either been let go or are in danger of being let go by the move to LA from San Francisco. Good luck to you all!

  6. I want my TechTV! (as it was!)…
The channel is being discontinued in about 3 days time here in New Zealand, aparently it is not being broadcast internationally. I’ve become hooked on CFH and The ScreenSavers. Got soo much out of the shows. Managed to find the 2004 Almanac (sp?) in a local book shop the other day and brought it (with DVD),
I’d like to fire up my own local TV Show (with permission) and what a massive task that would be be. I think CFH and TSS worked for me because they were daily.
I’m really going to miss everyone.

  7. leo I hated to see you go I watched call for help every day I have been building computers for many years and you still showed me many thing that I did not know I hope you can put a new show with out g4 on some other sat channel I think this new network is badly managed what can I do to help get it off my tv.
    Joel McFarlane.

  8. RJ, please don’t attempt to paraphrase my statement “for me”. I hold a law degree, practice law, and have some idea what I am talking about.
Fair use does not extend to stealing the entirety of someone else’s work, with or without attribution.

  9. Leo,
We all want to thank you for your great contribution of technical advice and tips that you have provided on “Call for Help and to TechTV for the past 6 years! I have been a HUGE FAN of your show. We truly appreciate all that you have done to try to make us more computer literate and Tech saavy over the years! We do hope and pray that another channel if not G4TechTV will be willing to allow you to air your show there or give you a better forum as you so deserve; for we support you 100% and wish the best for you. For there is a God; and He always looks out for those who help others in one way or another; He will be willing, if you ask to see you through this transition as well. I don’t feel that G4Tech TV may last for very much longer; for if they are willing to let you go Leo, than they will make so many other decisions as well that will not be rational or reasonable at all. Good Luck and God Bless You Leo, we hope to see you on the airwaves more than you are allowed to be at the present because of their poor and immature decisions!
    Sincerely Yours,
    Betsy Parker

  10. One of the few things I counted on watching on cable was Leo on Tech TV.
I really am not a big fan of gameing and or the sexual angle of the internet. So those aspects of Tech TV left had me hitting the remote.I am thinking that there has to be enough viewership to bring Tech TV back.If for no other reason then the reduction in help line calls.TECH TV is or was a pretty important window on San Fransisco and the whole north western computer alley and that for that fact alone it will come back and its just a matter of putting the right players or backers in place, it will.I am pretty excited about digital film makeing and the opening of the internet to more media content if the bandwidth problems can be addressed.Certainly I’d like to see more of the haps in San Fransisco.Maybe if there was more coverage of the city they would want to be more involved and the computer segments could be just a part of it rather than all computers all the time.No disrespect to Leo or the others on Tech TV but Tech TV needed some other personalities as strong as Leo to hold down their slots with wholey different attacks and formats and I dont think that ever really materialized like it should.
Then there is this obsession with the youth market where the programming has to be made for the attention span of a monarch butterfly which doesnt serve anyone includeing the market they are trying to capture. This is an epidemic societal problem that certainly can not be addressed fully on, for lack of a better word a botique channel.
It doesnt matter what mass media we are talking about the monopolzation of radio, movie distribution and the consolidation of TV, into just a few hands, instead of opening up the spectrum to may views, tastes, and subjects under FCC Powell and the Republicans has had the extreme opposite effect.Everyone Republican and Democrat should be concearned about this. What serves the Republicans today may not serce them tomorrow.
I have a question for Leo here too.Do you think,Microsoft and your rather lite jabs at them had anything to do with this situation?
I say this because it seems to me that the government said to Microsoft stop trying to monopolize everything going on the internet. It seems to me they are at it again with the new Media 9 Player, either you buy Windows XP or we cut video feeds, or you have to pay for the “Real” feeds. When you add up DSL, Cable, long distance amd then add firwall, virus protection, and all the other have to have no longer supported software, I wonder if the internet hasn’t reached critical mass with a major downturn in sight. Especially with the onslaught of perpetual pop-ups,spam and just openly fraudulent oppotunists.
Really Leo this is a strong letter of support and where you is, is where I’ll be tuneing in. All The Best

  11. Ugh, I can’t stand G4TechTV. I’m a huge gamer and a geek to boot. I hate the merger, and I doubt it’ll become unplugged, I do hope however Call for Help does air again! I’ll keep looking back Leo!

  12. G”Bore”Techtv….enough of the video game screenshot shows already! No one learns anything from this garbage channel!

  13. Yeah i miss the old techtv. I have really tried to give g4 a chance…but video games stuff all the time gets boring fast. And I play lots of video games. Also the production, writing, and the hosts…they are so puerile they belong on nickelodeon. It just lacks a polish and quality that techtv has (and hopefully will be able to keep but doubt it).
Irony is that the one program, X-Play that fits g4 perfectly shows the gapeing holes in quality. It does reviews, celeb interviews, cheats and overall video game coverage much much better then players, cheats, and judgement day does. Expand X-Play thirty minutes and toss those three shows would be my first advice.
As for Patrick…I am betting he is NOT moving to LA. Supposedly the last live show is July 15th, everything else through end of the month are pre-recorded banked programs that will be new, just not live.
And then…I think Sarah and Kevin staying and moving (in together so expect more lovie-dovie jokes). Yoshi, frankly, isn’t “pretty” enough, even though over qualified, has diminstrated such modding, computer, etc skills that he probably has been fielding offers left and right and probably worth more money then G4 will offer. I think X-Play hots will remain intact, with Cat along as the third “backup” host for screensavers. Those are being allowed to stay by G4 for several reasons one being they are exactly in the demographics G4 wants and notice all similiar in age to all their current crop of hosts (also a seperate reason why patrick not moving – to old). Also those staying don’t have their own families so moving just an inconvience, not a major trauma as it would be for a true husband/wife with kids such as Patrick and others.
One thing that g4 reminds me of is Fox when it started. They had this demographic goal they where after and every decision was an attempt to pander to it, not realizing all they where doing was insulting the intelligence of that audience and creating crap as a result. Course never helps that those deciding what teens and 20s like tend to be in their 50s and 60s.

  14. I would like to start by saying Leo G4 sucks ass… I have never seen such a conglomeration of crappy shows. I am 34 and love gaming but I hate these shows. The Screen Savers is and will always be Leo Laporte.
They mine as well called it Leo Laporte TV. I have enjoyed your shows for a long time.
I wish the damn corporate suites would realize that TechTV revolves around Leo Laporte. I feel like I’m part of the family when I see you on Television. I plan on causing this station alot of grief in the way of phone calls, faxes, because my 7:00 will not be the same.
The problem is we all need to quit watching which will eventually lead the network into financial issues. We all need to ban together to abort this network unless they bring the shows we all love. This is what made the network and which will allow it to survive. Not these crappy dorks trying to make it look like they really know gaming…..what a farce….
Leo we love to watch ya and we know you will find work again if not on G4TechtvZDTVWHIOTV or whatever it’s called next week. Good luck we are pulling for you and will harass the network until they bring you back. You can’t tell I’m pissed? Good Luck
    Matt Jaros

  15. I wrote an email to g4/techtv asking if they were nuts (cancelling LEO ?) with the LEO RELOADED pic attached, and they replied saying that they were “in negotiations with Leo La Porte”. I’ve been downsized twice, and know that big corporations speak with forked tongue. Best of luck, Leo. A Fan

  16. Leo, you are sorely missed by all. No disrespect to Pat and Kevin but the chemistry is not the same without you. I’ve written several times to G4TechTV, without a response as yet.

  17. G4 looks like GAMES FOR. The all GAME network. I miss the old TechTV. Watched almost every show of TSS and CFH to see and enjoy Leo’s humor and LEARN new things. TSS is trying hard but it is not the same without Leo’s experiences and quick wit. The other shows are for kids. The big spenders advertisers look for are going elsewhere.

  18. Boy what a great sentiment that echoes what so many TechTV fans are feeling. When G4TechTV goes belly up, I hope that those favorite shows and hosts find their way back onto TV.

  19. Ron,
Don’t confuse a lawyer with a layperson. I had a class in law school on copyright, and one on Patents. I hold an MIS degree. I have read many actual cases on fair use. I have attended at least two post-graduate seminars on copyright. I know what it is, and of its limitations. Some educational institutions have been sucessfully sued over fair use, which was formerly thought almost impossible. What is posted on this site is almost certainly a copyright violation.

  20. Leo:
I’m going to miss see you and the rest of the crew. I can’t believe what kind of crap that has taken the place of what all of us are use to seeing! Uggghhhh!!!!! I truly believe that this whole G4 thing is going to go absolutely into the toilet. Talk about a piss poor website!! Looks like a bunch of web developer drop outs designed this thing. I truly believe that the voice of this posting, and others will echo in the minds of people with forsight and be born into something even better. It is true that you can never learn to much espically in today’s every changing world, what kind of education are we going to get out of this? Do more of us (working) class people have nothing else to learn than what kind of games are being released? I find to horrifying that this is supose to help us in everyday life. GET A CLUE G4!

  21. That article was little more than a punch at Comcast and G4. The author systematicly paints Comcast as the proverbial Giant and Tech TV as teh little person. We all will miss what TTV was but as sad as it may be to face, some networks do fail.
“But for whatever reason, Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Paul Allen, whose Vulcan Programming company owned TechTV, put the channel up for sale. (Insert joke about Paul Allen needing the cash here.)”
If the author had actually done his homework, he would indeed know that Mr Allen’s buisness’s are in need of cash. RCN has filed for bankruptcy and Charter is teetering on the edge as well. So yes Mr Allen may be a rich man, but his companies are far from it.

  22. Leo,
I hope you will land a TV spot soon, I miss your talks. G4 and Comcast have no idea of the market share they are loosing. I got rid of my Comcast some time ago and got Direct tv! Now I’m glad I did. what about video conferencing or Satellite radio or even gain a channel through Direct TV, I would pay a small increase to get a show back on the air.
    Regards,
    Mike

  23. It figures that G4 would lie about Leo’s “negotiations” with them. They already proved they couldn’t run a successful cable channel, so they bought their competition so they could get rid of some of the best shows on TV. I only hope that some executive comes to his senses before it is too late.

  24. I hope you dont’ go to G4. Its a bastion of foul shows with foul ideas. Since TechTV is gone, I think a web broadcast of something liek the screensavers would be great. A Video Magazine of sorts. Have past hosts and employees of TechTv do small video reports and tips that can be played at different times.
I know I’d pay a small fee to see a site like that. Hell I’m not all that pretty but I bet I could put together a nice video report on something or another.

  26. Leo, I was very upset to hear that you got left out of the G4-TechTv merger. However, like most everyone else here. I think that it may have been for the better. Comcast can barely handle their TV,phone, and internet services right. So there is no real suprise the G4TV is such garbage on its own, and I’m a big gamer and dont really care for it much. I was thinking maybe local TV station KRON right out of S.F. would be interested in giving you your own tech show. I’ve seen a few shows that they produced that were on other channels like the Discovery Channel. Even if it just ran locally for now, I think it would become popular enough that it would eventually be run on channels like DC. One of the best things about this idea would mean no relocation to LA area just to be a puppet for Comcast. My family and myself are really wishing the best for you Leo. I encourage others that are reading this to head over to KRON’s website (www.kron.com) and go to the contact link and get the emails rolling to them. Asking them to please create a tech show with Leo as its host!
Best wishes to you and your family Leo!
    Joe Schneider

  27. I learned almost everything I know about computers from you. The TV channel is just not the same without Call for Help. Change almost always means cutting out the best shows. Sure hope your back on the air with the program somewhere soon.

  28. G4 in my opinion will not be able to survive with it present schedule of shows for very long. The only saving grace is The Screen Savers but even it does not really fit in with the rest of the G4 tpe of shows. Too bad too. I have watched ZDTV and TechTV and really learned a lot from them. Since G4 is not likely to change then a new channel needs to arise and replace the loss. It has a ready made audience!

  29. Leo, the sun doesn’t come up in the East anymore since G4 ravaged tech tv. I am disabled and don’t get out much and you have taught me, encouraged me, challenged me and kept me company for years. I am so lost without Call for Help. You have done it all with humor and without having to have yellow, orange or purple hair. Please tell me you are coming to the air soon. I am on the east coast and can’t get your radio show. I need a Leo fix!

  30. What I would really like to know is when Call For Help will be on again, regardless of the station. Call For Help was a great show. And where is Cat at now? What about Pat? And the rest of the crew? Get ’em all back up on the air.

  31. I agree with alot people get back on the air as soon as possbile. We live to learn more about computers not game crap. I play alot of games. But will tell you I am 40 yrs old and have been watching you from the very old days of cable tv. You are the best Leo you may not know every answer but you sure do your best to find it.

  32. David Pogue’s article was a fitting eulogy for what was once a great network. As former volunteer chat room host for ZDTV and later for TechTV, I remember those halcyon days with a smile. I met a lot of great people on and off line as a result of my volunteer involvement and still remember my visit to the then ZDTV Studios in 1999 fondly. I look at the new G4 line up, have watched some of the programs, and one word comes to mind; sad. No discussions, interviews or debates about the technology industry or science. No more hints on how to use or take care of your PC or MAC better. Besides “The Screen Savers” one of the last vestiges of the old ZDTV/TechTV, G4 is all about games and gaming hints. To use an old commercial line from the 1980’s “where’s the beef?” A network as myopic as this, is not long for this world.
If I may be so bold, I’ll use a gaming analogy here from “Myst” one of my favorite games. Perhaps some smart network executive out there watching the destruction of TechTV’s quality flagship shows will find the linking book entitled “Call For Help” that fell into the fissure of television’s neverland. That person may see Call For Help’s potential, and decide that “the final chapter has yet been written”. However, it can olny work with Leo and Company back at the helm. The Learning Channel (TLC) perhaps, could be a good landing pad if TLC can see beyond the home improvement and personal makeover corner that they seem to have backed themselves into. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, watch, and wait, just like we all will.

  33. Leo, all I ask is that you post where you’ll be hosting next. I don’t watch the new G4TechTV shows, its not worth watching anymore. What a shame that the show was just starting to really take off and then Comcast has to kill it.

  34. Leo, all I ask is that you post where you’ll be hosting next. I don’t watch the new G4TechTV shows, its not worth watching anymore. What a shame that the show was just starting to really take off and then Comcast has to kill it.

  35. I will never watch GTechTV without Leo on it. You are the greatest computer television show host ever. It was the biggest mistake ever to merge the two channels. G4TechTV is no longer for computer people. It’s only for gamers. They should have been left separate. I certainly hope you get another show Leo. I will definitely watch it. I hope Cat will be on it with you.

  36. i would have agree with all the comments made here by all these folks, and i knew something was going wrong when you said that you would not be ont he screen savers anymore, and that the company was being solid.
i have to say that you and all the people that worked on techtv, had a more rounded programing, in that there was something for everyone, form games to pc help and all that was involved with that.
this g4 stuff is just for games, i mean i’m a gamer myself but not 24hours aday, and i like to get on my pc and do things aswell, and let me tell you and all the people on the screen savers, call for help made it much easyer for me to learn about pc’s. i have build two pc from your help and others.
i sure will miss you and all the other techtv personalits, that i have come to see day in and day out.
so hope you do get back on air with all the others in one way or another, and best wishes to you and yours, and to all the other fine helpful people at techtv.
    thank your leo.

  37. Well it’s good to hear the G4 is possibly “negotiating” more television work with you. But, you know how coporate announcements are made – careful wording and sugar coating. I have to say that the personalities on TechTV is what made me a repeat viewer (are the sponsors listening!).
Unfortunately, I live in sunny Phoenix, Arizona and can’t listen in on your radio show. Anyhow, good luck and hope to see you soon [on G4].
    Sincerely,
    Mitch

  38. I sincerely hope that you get back on TV. I miss Call for Help which was my daily 9am show after Good Morning America. You cannot be replaced and I miss your advice and general wisdom! I went to the G4 website and in disgust, I removed it from my favorite places! what for, when there is nothing there of the caliber when you were associated with TechTV as we knew it.

  39. Leo, if you go syndicate, I hope you invite some of the old gang with ya. You used to get actors to visit the The Screen Savers and Call for Help. I’ve read what some critics have said from various articals about G4TechTv and agree with one thing, The prior shows of TechTv are good and were becoming great. The relationships between you and the others were(for the most part) and are obviously a positive front too me and other veiwers. I hope some how you and Pat, and maybe Kevin, can get some syndicated show off the ground and going for us too watch. To me, TechTv should have stayed untouched for another 5 to 8 years. With your experience in the Tv market, I hope something good developes out of all this for you and your friends.
    just another fan,
    Ted – from South Carolina

  40. What a mess the new G4TechTvABCDEFG is. I just discovered The Screen Savers — but was a Leo fan from the old MSNBC days. Not a big fan of the jumbled mess that G4 is. It’s sad that they can’t even get their website S— together.

  41. Comcast picked up a lot of gamers but dropped the ball when it came to computer enthusiasts. There are a lot more of them than you would think. Leo is an uncommon man. He knows how to ask the right questions without sounding like he is talking down to people. That is true genius. He knows most all of the aswers but focuses on the subject matter rather than his next contract for a t.v. show. Not much of a reward from a company as large as Comcast that ought to know better. But its all American, short term profits and fast bucks, farsightedness and good judgment be damned. Good luck Leo, let us know where you land in a new show.
    Mike from Greeley Colorado

  42. You people are saying goodbye to all the techtv staff patrick and Leo seem to be the only ones going. I got fifty buck says Kevin sells out faster than a donut shop offering dollar donuts to cops. Leo and Patrick made TSS and the rest of the channel they’re probably going to replace Patrick with some twentysomething moron who looks good but don’t know sh*t. Tss is the only show I watch that is until they sell out which they will. I’m a gamer and a tech geek but I don’t need a channel with twenty differant game shows. I love the g4 people call themselves personalities that is blatant false advertising that implies they actually haver personalities I’ve watched their shows they are the most annoying people alive. The only reason they host shows about gaming is because playing video games is all they are qualified for besides flipping burgers. Leo it’s sad that a channel which was dedicated to helping and educating people is turned into a lame channel for pure entertainment and people wonder why American children are as stupid as they’re. Good luck to you Leo and Patrick you to are the only reason CFH and TSS were as good as they were. Burn in hell G4TECHTV!!

  44. OOPs sorry bout the double post Leo but at 3 am what do you expect I’m not working on all cylinders so the spelling maybe off to.

  45. I’m completely dissapointed by the change/merger of G4 and TechTV. Leo, I’ve learned so much from you since ZDTV first hit the air…er…cable here in Louisville. When G4 launched I thought an all-game network was a cool idea. But the production on all of their shows is so poor and the writing seemed moronic. TechTv used to have so much more class and was so informative. I’m really upset about this whole mess. Leo in my opinion You ARE TechTv and brought true substance to television. I hope that you work out a new program on whatever network. You’re a great teacher and TV personality. Thanks for everything, David Ernspiker

  46. Leo: I am not a long time fan on Call For Help or TSS.. i started watching last year and to be honest it was because of TSS i had enough guts to start building my own pc..and my friends..
Now I am a gamer, and it may seem like G4techtv is a great thing. IT is the opposite.. I loved TechLive and CFH because they gave me simple hacks and tools that i couldn’t find. I don’t like the idea of replacing the hosts…. I like the shows because of it’s staff and content.. and would definetly not watch it if some bratty 20-somethings were running the shows..
G$TechTV is a disaster.. the G4 Shows are irrataiting and completely stupid.. (cheats! what the heck is that??????????????????????).. and if they change the hosts of the TechTV shows, then don’t be hesitant to start your own TV Network.. im sure by just this website you will be able to get the funds 😉

  47. Leo,
I’ve been a fan of TSS for years, and find the variety of information and reviews very useful and entertaining. I only use my TIVO to record one show, and TSS is it! Your humor and knowledge is tops in my book, and I hope you can convince another network to procuce a show for you. TSS was very successful on TechTv, and not everyone can get it… so just think how well it would do on CBS, ABC, or NBC? I wish you luck, and hope to see you on the air again soon.
