Thanks, David!

Thanks to New York Times columnist (and good friend) David Pogue for his heartfelt column in the Thursday New York Times Circuits section. [free registration required – but it’s worth it]
David got it right with one exception. He writes:

In fact, G4TechTV is indeed in negotiations with Mr. Laporte about an increased role at the new network.

He’s quoting a company spokesman, not me. I am not “in negotiations” with G4. We have a cordial relationship, but if they have plans for an increased role for me at the channel they’re keeping it a secret. And you couldn’t characterize our infrequent conversations as negotiations in any way.

I am, however, talking with a number of people about new TV shows. I’m hopeful something will come of that. I’ll keep you posted when there’s something more to say.

  1. Leo, you’ve been an entertainment to me for many years… since your old gig at KGO. I surely hope that something will work out for you and you can get back on the screen.
    73,
    Dave / W6TE

  2. Thanks Leo, for all of your help! I’m a Senior Citizen, and my computer engineer Son tells me that I’m pretty savvy (thanks to you!) I hope to see you back on the air soon.

  3. You’re not trying to put me into tears AGAIN, are you, Leo?
Thanks for six years, and lotsa laughs! Here’s to more to come!

  4. The reality show would rock. But what “other” shows could there be. Hmmmm.
“This is Leo Laporte here at E3.” No.
    CFH!!!!!

  5. That was a terrific article. Glad someone is paying attention. I look forward to seeing you smiling face on tv again 🙂

  6. Geez. How can Leo and TechTv be toast already?! I haven’t gotten used to losing ZDTV yet.

  7. We need you leo I’ve been watching g4techtv and I feel like i’m gitting dumber by the sec. Help

  8. The reason they said they’re in negotiations with you is because of all the people who don’t get TechTV or can’t watch anymore. It gets people to turn to the channel. Maybe there should be a Leo reality show. Dropping the kids off at school, feeding the goats, I know I’d watch.

  9. Leo, I think you should talk to Regis and see if ABC would pick up the show. On a large network, if they only knew how many people are in an uproar about whats happening, including myself. The next show thats going to be cancelled is The ScreenSavers. I dont even see it on the G4
website, shows lineup. This is a disaster ! ! ! That NY times article was on target.

  10. Thanks Leo for the comment about my Tribute show to you and the gang in KFI Chat today. It was my pleasure to do it.
I hope you do find something to do. But don’t throw your committement to Leoville TV away if it
doesn’t go the way you hope it will.
And I have to agree with Joe’s comment above as well. The Screen Savers is going to have a very short leash at G4 and it’s better for all involved to go out in dignity rather than be pawns.
Can’t speak for everyone else but I’ve had enough of these corporate suit head games.

  11. Leo, I hope you do come back on air. I hope that they do not replace Patrick, He’s the only saving grace reason that I’ve not abanoned watching G4. TSS is the only reason I’ve not blocked it from my directv listing.

  12. It sound like to me Comcast is sending out damage control spin to the press. G4 Media had never any interest of continuing Call For Help on G4____TV. Leo It will be great to see you once again back on television on a Cable network. and on the web at Leoville.tv.

  13. Leo:
Loved: The write up by Pouge.
Still listening to: Your show on KFI640AM (Much better minus Tom Leykis)
    Looking forward to: http://www.leoville.tv
Looking forward to: Your Tivo book in the fall.
Favorite segment: A visit with several members of “The Homebrew Club”

  14. man i’m gonna miss techtv. who’s next howard stern? i’m not a gamer so i’ll nix g4. oh yeah one other thing, the riaa can stick it, who do they think they are? Their interest is in the artists? pleaze! why do you think the artists need to go on the road? so they can make some money that the record companies can’t get there greedy hands on! rock on leo

  15. Good luck with your career decisions. Remember we are usually the happiest doing what we do best. I think your following is amazing for a cable channel host. I almost get the feeling that the old TechTV cast will be doing techie conventions a la Star Trek.

  16. The main reason i loved TechTV was that you could tell the people who worked there actaully cared.
Anyway, I wanted to say one thing. I am twenty years old, and plan on going to college next year. The thing is I have a major problem. From the time I was in the seventh grade I was positive I would go in for psychology. Now I am not so sure. Around six monthes ago, I started to watch TSS everyday. From that time untill now, computers and technology became a love of mine. Now I think computer science might be the way to go. I haven’t made a decision yet, but I thought you should know the impact you and your work has had on my life.

  17. I have beed watching Tech TV from before when it was ZDTV. That tranfomation was a good one and only made the network that much better. From watching The Screen Savers and Call For Help I made the leap to building my own computer. Best of luck and well wishes in what every your path takes. If you make it back to TV I will be watching.

  18. Leo, I’ve tried to watch this unholy hybrid called G4TechTV but it’s like a train wreck in slow motion. Tech TV’s magic was fueled by geeks wanting to spread the faith by going on TV. G4 is obviously infested by wanna be TV personalities making it in LA LA land on the back of technology. We all miss the honesty and empathy shown by the old Tech TV family. I hope you can help save us from the mediocrity soon.

  19. What a great show and great group of people. I will truly miss TechTV. It was part of my daily routine. When I needed to do research on a specific problem or new tech gear I would always use techtv.com as a resource. Now it is gone. What a tremendous mistake it was of G4 not to at least archive techtv.com. I have lost a great resource and feel a little helpless now. For example, I wanted to read up on the newest DVD burners and headed to my favorite resource to read on comments and reviews…gone! A friend of mine was having problems with WinXP…headed to my favorite resource for some helpful tips and solutions…gone!
    I truly miss TechTv.

  20. I agree with all the above! How sad the space on my DirecTv on channel 354 has become. Sure, some of the shows are cool but the lack of the web site with write ups and tips and the lack of new shows from TechTv has left me felling ill. I change to that channel to G4techTV on occasion thinking I’m going to catch CFH or even a new Screen Savers only to be brought back to reality. Very sad indeed….

  21. I’ve been watching you since Call For Help had you and a lady helping many people, with their computer problems. You’re the reason I built my own computer and was amazed that it actually worked. It took me 7 hrs to get up the nerve to turn it on. I’m facinated by computers and what they can do. You’re the one who showed me and motivated me to seek more knowledge. Your show and the Screensavers taught me alot. I know that I’m not the only one. It makes sense with the obvious popularity of both shows, there is a market out there for your kind of tv show? The merger would not be happening, if you hadn’t paved the way with your show. G4 won’t make it with me. I am not a gamer. I hope you will find a way to give us back our one source of computer expertise other than magazines. Now I have to change my homepage.

  22. When I wrote to G4 a while ago begging for them to pursue Leo “by any means necessary” I received a response similar to that article’s statement promising me that Leo was in negotiations and would be with the new network for a long time. I guess it is sad that the only way that the new network can sell the old viewers is by stringing us along that our favorite hosts will be there and our shows will not change. It is sad that they can see that their core audience would be there for what Leo and the founding members of TechTv bring to the table, but yet they continue to move from that. It is even sadder that they are selling the future programming by promising negotiations that are non-existent.

  23. Leo, Just keep plugging away at those TV opportunities.
I know in my heart that there has to be some bright television executives who can see the awesome possibilities of adding you (and an experienced supporting cast) to their lineup.
    Keep the faith!

  24. Good Luck Leo. I have been watching from the beginning and I mean the beginning. I started with “The Site” which was on MSNBC. I then got my satellite dish as soon as I found out ZDTV was created. I hated to see the screen savers cut to only an hour. Now I have been visited your site often to keep up with the news. I have no doubt that you will be back soon. Would love to see you with at least a weekly show on a cable news network.

  25. All right, Steve, you win this round. Thanks, Leo, for jumping in and clearing the air of the Leo negotiations rumor. It appears Steve may have some inside track, or inside information. I don’t know Steve, or recognize his name. Apparently, though, Steve did some kind of “Tribute” to Leo on-air, or in print. Steve must be “someone.”
Steve unequivocally said that part of the article was without merit, and now Leo tells us (by inference), Steve’s instincts or information was correct.
Oh well…. credit to Steve, and thanks to Leo for letting us know the true facts.

  26. I don’t think it is in anyones best interest to relocate to Los Angeles to do a show. LA sucks! I moved out of LA over 12 years ago. I will never go back! Yet, I can’t imagine a TSS or CFH without the oringinal Hosts, Cast and Crew. I think G4 was foolish to close the SF location. They can still produce those show from SF without any hardships. I hope Leo and the gang all get better jobs than what G4 has to offer. G4 wasn’t ready for this merger. Just look at the web site. It all f*cked up. TechTV could have done a much better job if the merger had gone the other way. ThechTV can write webpages! G4 can only play games! That’s why G4 pages lack content.
I hope Leo can get something great going so we don’t have to deal with the G4’rs. There is a market for TechTV. Just don’t let those fat-cat greedy Executives getin and bleed the new station dry.
    We want out TechTV!!!
    louder!
    WE WANT OUR TECHTV !!!!!!!

  27. Leo,
I see you are adding a TV section to your web site. Could this mean you are getting ready to stream your own version of CFH over the Internet? We are so ready to have you, Roger, Cat, Kevin, Sarah, Dan, Jessica, Pat and Yoshi all continue on at a non G4 station!
Whatever you do, please do it without G4!!!

  28. I must say that I am at a loss of words at how angry I am at the G4-Techtv merger. I watched TechTV almost all the time; it was like my default show. I game, but I NEVER watched G4 before, and it sucks.
I do hope you get on the air again on a channel that I get.
    Missing the great Leo
    Albert Isaac.

  29. Thank you Tim. Apology accepted.
If it’s one thing I’ve learned is that you can’t always trust the suits to keep their word on anything. It’s not so much about taking care of the employees as it is exploiting their vulnerabilities for their own ends.
Keep doing what you do best, Leo and thanks for mentioning my Tribute show to you guys yesterday in chat. 🙂

  30. Thanks Mr. Laporte for all the information you provided a lot of novice computer users, who because of your efforts became very proficient as a result. I know you will get something substantial going and only hope that it is a daily program with a spot for Screen Savers, because they are not long for g4. g4 kept them on in hopes of retaining the ZDTV/TechTV audience. Stupid move on their part, because they only keep them for one hour per weekday. CFH and SS also showcased many people who basically got started with ZDTV/TechTV. The young lady who you became aware of when she was 12 or 13 who has become an authority on digital cameras. I know there are way to many to list, but it does provide the justification for such programs. g4 is running “The Digital Sweeps Stakes” again. As soon as they realize that The SS contestants are not entering the sweepstakes during the full daily period, they will dump SS like a hot potatoe, and add one more asinine program in it’s place. So getr something going so Pat,Kevin,Sarah, and the rest of the crew have a place to head to immediately, which will keep the team together. Maybe even sooner and then they can thumb their noses @ g4. I would love to see g4 “eat it big time”.

  32. The only other time I felt this strongly about a show host leaving was when Art Bell left the airwaves for awhile…
Please Leo, FORGET G4____TV they are a travesty.
You are much better off without them.

  33. Thanks Leo,
Your the best, I no longer watch g4Techtv not a gamer.
Tried to get computer info from past shows, Screen Savers and Call for Help.
They no longer have the past shows for information research.
Good luck Pat, Kevin and Sarah.

  34. wHY GOD WHY. lEO TAUGHT US SOO SOO SOO SOO MUCH. wE WILL GO ON BUT WE WILL NOT FORGET TSS OR CFH OR ZDTV DAYS. I HAD TO WATCH THAT WITH A SCRABLED PICTURE B,BUT I DIDN’T CARE BECAUSE IT WAS SO INTERTAINING. I WOULD KNOW NOTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS IF NOT FOR LEO

  35. Could it(G4) be that a bunch of bratty gamers that want to keep the WAN all for themselves? Maybe they want us newbys out there surfin’ instead of learning on tv? Okay, but give me a reason why they would squash the ONLY show with the knowledge we crave?
And for you guys getting paid to read these posts, G4 is what? gangue gamers geld genius?

  36. I have to agree with everyone. You made it possible for people to learn and understand computers. I will not be watching the G4 stuff either. If I had the money I would help get you back on the air the way it has been from ZDTV and so on. I have also gotten e-mails back saying you are talking to them so you need to check into. They are using your name and stuff without your promission. Will miss your shows alot. Hope and prayer you get back on air. Hey why not ask everyone to send in money so you could start your on channel

  37. I was willing to give G4 a chance. Their chance is up. Not even tuning in for Screensavers is worth it (I may record it from time-to-time). I had DVR’ed the last couple of weeks episodes of Call and Screensavers, and just went looking for one of Sarah’s tips from a couple of weeks ago.
The new website is trash. The new programs are trash. Everything I loved about TechTV is gone. I hope the remaining staff find new jobs and/or a new station to start all over again, with you Leo of course, and tell G4 to “game on” for all those middle-school aged viewers. They obviously just needed a channel without dealing with the FCC red tape, so bought one. What a shame!
Gonna whine, gonna yelp, missing the rest of TechTV, and Call-for-Help.

  38. We want Leo back more, This is why I started watching the shows. He is great. We don’t need to see all those gaming shows. There is too many other computer issues out there we all want more information on.
    PLease Put LEO back!!!

  39. Okay, I am new here. I don’t have the history of going back to ZDTV.
However, I think there are some non-emotional, real economic reasons why the TechTV lineup should still include the shows like CFH, TechLive and even the original cast of ScreenSavers.
Ratings: original TechTV lineup had improving ratings; G4 information I could not find.
Note the fan following for Leo, Sarah and Kevin, even Patrick , Yoshi and Dan.
Demographics: TechTV was attracting both the 30 and below as well as the boomers
(last I looked, the boomers were still an economic buying force)
Redundancy: G4 shows repeat both themselves as well as some TechTV shows (drop the goofy G4 crappy ones and save some money)
Style/Quality: TechTV was actual TV production quality; G4 could be done from a local high school or somebody’s basement.
Interest value: TechTV actually provides real information; the last G4 program I tried to watch debated the definition of “gamer” for 20 minutes. Although highly annoying (which apparently has some entertainment value), it was a waste of the air waves. Dead air would have been a better choice.
Web presence: The TechTV drop; G4 not ready web presence is a disaster. We have done this countless times. It is called merger. Create a new central web presence; link to the old stuff (both TechTV and G4) and migrate to the new presence; keeping the good and trashing the crap. It would appear that they forgot we are generations of channel switchers. If you don’t give us something interesting that we want to see, we switch channels. After several tries the switch will be permanent.
Bottom line: I believe that the new folks in charge of the G4/TechTV mutation are neither techies nor gamers. They are interested in only sales and ratings but at the same time have no clue what their real market is. Forget these clowns. Move over to the net and supply both tech and game information. There are enough of us that will pay for this to keep you afloat.
G4/TechTV merger is doomed to fail, unless a remarkable metamorphosis takes place.
Nirvana: G4/TechTV executives get a clue and bring together what was working from both channels. Truly, the best of both would be the best kick-ass gaming-tech lineup in the world. BTW, has anyone noticed that “tech” and “gaming” is absolutely everywhere, the economic gain of a well run and market-focused lineup would be staggering. G4/TechTV get a clue! Focus your money or you will go down the same way so many have in the past.
    Sorry, for ranting so.

  40. I can’t believe the trash that is on my cable channel 87 (G4). Can there really be that many gamers out there to keep this thing afloat? Glad we have cable competition here or else I’d have to do something radical. Hope someone will pick-up TechTV for those of us (boomers) who need it.

  41. That G4-Tech TV website is so terrible. : ( I really miss the old Tech TV site. I don’t have digital cable, so I used to like going there to watch the archived video clips from the show, but there isn’t any video clips at the G4 site.
I hope they will find places for the people from Tech TV there though. Just makes me sad how it’s all about gaming there from what I see. I wish they would spend more time teaching people things, so they could learn. I seem to prefer the programming on the Discovery Channel more these days.

  42. I suggest disappointed viewers of CFH and TSS contact the Discovery Channel about developing a similar program on their Science Channel or The Learning Channel. Here is a link: “>http://extweb.discovery.com/viewerrelations>
Any suggestions for other channels that might be intrestred?
Let’s don’t just preach to the choir, let’s let the other channels know there is a big market for CFH and TSS type programs. Please go to http://extweb.discovery.com/viewerrelations and tell them “we want Leo”!

  43. I’d love to see Leo do anything but convert over to G4TECHTV anything TechTV once was is now dead. I think that Leo could start something somewhere else much better that G4 will ever offer. Let TechTV die in peace and something new rise up out of the ashes.

  44. Tivo Bash them thumb down all their shows! Cancell all your recordings and season passes they get feedback on what you watch and record on your Tivo’s! =)

  45. for those that dont like to register…. here it is…
    ——
    A Lamentation for TechTV
t’s a fact of high-tech life: things move fast. Don’t fall too much in love with anything, because it might not be here this time next year.
Like Sony’s innovative Clié palmtops, which Sony announced this week that it will no longer sell in the U.S.
Or like TechTV, a cable station dedicated to technology lovers. For years, I’ve regularly TiVo’ed several of its shows—especially “The Screen Savers,” “Call for Help” and “TechLive”—and then, by fast-forwarding, cherry-picked the best tips, tricks, news, trends, and Web links. I learned something new every time.
Last Friday, TechTV as we know it disappeared. It was swallowed up by Comcast, the cable-TV giant, who has merged TechTV with its own G4 channel (all video games, all the time).
The new, combined channel, called G4TechTV, will include some of TechTV’s shows in a new form. But several shows have been canceled, including “Call for Help” and “Tech Live,” and the hosts of the remaining shows may be replaced. The timing couldn’t be worse. After struggling for years to get into the channel lineups of the nation’s cable and satellite providers, TechTV was finally making some headway and building a following. (The Times wrote about “Call for Help” as recently as December, in a story about its live, 24-hour “Help-a-Thon.”)
But for whatever reason, Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Paul Allen, whose Vulcan Programming company owned TechTV, put the channel up for sale. (Insert joke about Paul Allen needing the cash here.)
Comcast is trying to put a bright spin on things, proclaiming “G4techTV will be the one and only network that is plugged into every dimension of games, gear, gadgets & gigabytes.”
But behind the press release, you’ll find a lot of very unhappy people. For starters, there are the 285 TechTV staffers whose jobs are being eliminated.
Then there are “The Screen Savers” (TSS) fans, who already miss original host Leo Laporte since his departure a couple of months ago, and may soon see the departure of his co-host, Patrick Norton. (A G4TechTV spokesman says only that the new channel is “in negotiations with several TechTV hosts.”)
One laid-off employee told me that in pursuit of the young male demographic, Comcast has an incentive to replace these veteran computer-industry personalities with twentysomethings.
If that’s true, I worry that we won’t be seeing any more of TSS’s trademark interviews with brilliant—but over-30—industry pioneers like Jef Raskin, Robert Moog, Don Norman and Douglas Engelbart.
In fact, you have to wonder what interviews and cutting-edge demos they’ll offer at all, since Comcast is moving what’s left of TechTV from San Francisco (high-tech country) to L.A. (video-game country).
Then there’s the new Web site, G4TechTV.com, which is a blinking, pulsing organizational disaster. Its chaos doesn’t say much for the show’s new guardians, although the G4TechTV spokesman reminded me that the two channels merged only last Friday, on a holiday weekend. He assured me that the Web site will constantly improve.
The real tragedy is that a merged gamer-PC channel might not be any more likely to succeed than two separate channels did; in fact, you might argue that the combined channel will disappoint both constituencies equally. As one disappointed fan wrote on G4’s feedback board: “They think they can attract a larger, younger demographic by just putting on younger faces. These people, however, will not feel the pinch until the ratings plummet down the road. It happened where I worked before.
“These fools would let an aging Robin Williams go to bring in Carrot Top. We can only hope that these short-sighted morons realize the errors of their ways and bring back Leo Laporte before the ratings take a nose-dive to the point where they decide to cancel G4/TechTV altogether.”
In fact, G4TechTV is indeed in negotiations with Mr. Laporte about an increased role at the new network. Meanwhile, G4TechTV exhorts viewers to give the new channel a try, send feedback at its Web site, and be patient; the merged network will “constantly improve” over the next 12 months.
That may be so—but in the short term, at least, I’ll miss my old on-screen friends at TechTV.

  46. There is a God and He smiles on us greatly………
I can only hope you show your face somewhere other than Gwh~re, I mean G4.
