Friday Night Lights

All the news that's fit to rant aboutHeaded home in a little bit. But there’s still time for a news update.

Skylab was launched on this day in 1973. Gabriel Farenheit was born in 1686. Happy 60th Birthday George Lucas.

  1. The German police continue to diss Sven J, the author of the Sasser worm and 18 Netsky variants. Now they’re calling him a “script kiddy.” (I’d love to know the German for that.) Sven says he originally wrote Netsky as an anti-virus (true – it removes Bagle). Apparently his poor programming skills created a monster instead. He will be tried as a juvenile and will likely avoid jail time.

  2. And now there’s a new worm that attacks Sasser infected computers. Dabber uses the FTP server installed by Sasser to install itself. Once embedded, Dabber allows backdoor access to the compromised system.
  3. Yahoo is taking on Google on the email front. Yahoo Mail has announced it’s going to up it’s free storage from 6 to 100 megabytes. Paid users will get virtually unlimited storage.
  4. CNN has switched from Google to Yahoo for it’s on-site search tool.
  5. Yahoo and Google agree on one thing: not listing WhenU. The adware company was removed from both search engines when it was accused of manipulating search results using a technique called “cloaking.” WhenU said cloaking was used by an outside contractor and they’ve stopped doing it.
  6. 2.6 million Americans have taken advantage of cell phone number portability to switch providers since the new rules went into effect in November.

Tune in tomorrow at 7:40a Eastern for my weekly visit with John Donabie on 1010 CFRB Toronto. And, of course, every Saturday and Sunday, noon to 3p Pacific on KFI 640 AM, Los Angeles.

  1. I am saddened to learn of the stupid act of dismantling the programs with their staff at TechTV. I’ll miss Leo’s informative chats, his humor and presentation of complex subjects to viewers. Also, will miss Cat!

  2. Yeeeeeeeeeees, Leo finally off the air for good. You guys were useful in like 1997. But now, so so boring. Patrick, you suck. Haha. Great news.

  5. Glad you’re coming back; we missed you in chat last week!
Also, today happens to be my birthday, so your return makes a nice gift 🙂

  6. I sent my comments regarding you not being on G4 combining with TechTV and basically it was: “If Leo LaPorte is not on the new combined network, I’ll not watch.”
I have DirecTV ONLY for TechTV. I’ll drop DirecTV too. Only reason I continue with TW is the RoadRunner cable modem.

  7. Leo, All I can say is if they dont have call for help on G4techtv I probroly will find something else to watch during 6-8 during that time slot. It just wouldnt be the same. I will quite watching until they notice that they cant to that. Well that is my 2 cents worth.

  8. Leo, I love you man. 🙂
Note: The link in the cell-phone portability goes to an article about Google & Yahoo dropping WhenU from it’s search engine.

  9. i am 53 ive watched you from the start thanks for making things understandable for the non geek good luck and thanks again for teaching me allthe best. i also opted out of news letters does that stop g4 from getting my info see you down the road

  10. Leo
What are we gonna do? We are all suffering from Leo withdrawls. I have watched a bit of Techtv/G4 with a bit of their new programming last night. Thumbs down big time…
G4 is making a big mistake is not considering you. I am now calling the G4 station… “the Grrrr station.”
Have a safe trip…and take care.

  11. Leo, it’s terrible what G4 is doing. Hopefully someone will realize their blunder and bring back CFH. The past two months have really been a rollercoaster – you’re there – then gone from the screensavers – then gone from CFH – then back on CFH – and now no more CFH. Like last time, i’m sure you’ll come out of this OK. We love to see you, but going to Bill to start a tech station…

  12. What do you mean your final episode will air May 21st? Is it over? Whether you do one show or another is not important. Keeping you on the station is. If G4 can’t see that I’d say a boycott is in order. We’ve already lost too many good people but I’m drawing the line with Leo. Take your show to Microsoft if he’ll listen. You might have to bite your tongue now and then, but at least you’ll be doing what you love. There’s a lot of good people on the loose. Now’s a good time for someone like bill to start his own tech station.

  13. Leo, my prayers are with you and your family, and also with the entire CFH crew. Especially Cat, who I still fantasize about. The poster above is right. The last few months have been a gut-wrenching rollercoaster for you and the ending is not as good as we had hoped. But you’ve been around the bends and upside down a few times before, so my money is on you to come out on top. I strongly believe that there is more series TV in your future, Leo. Everything you’ve done so far leads straight to the small screen. You know this as well as I do, that when bad things happen to good people, the tragedy turns to something better than you could possibly have anticipated. And keep up this site! It’s now going to be my only link to you! God bless you and everyone else.

  14. I am so very happy that you were able to get in a mini-vacation. As ‘the hardest working man in the technology media business’ you certainly deserved one.
I’m headed to what is potentially the last public appearance of the TechTV on-air family as we know them (Sarah and Kevin’s Digital Digs Roadshow in Nashville) so I’ll be away from the KFI chat.
Maybe we can get Sarah and Kevin to call in?
    Keep up the great work!

  15. On this date in 1998, Old Blue Eyes died (Frank Sinatra, the Chairman of the Board)……
If he was here he would sing the following regarding TechTV’s demise ….
“Yes.. the end is here, and I must face the final curtain. I’ll state my case of which I am certain… Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew, when I bit off more than I could chew… But when there were doubts, I ate it up and spit it out……”
If Leo is NOT in the G4/TechTV line-up, I will be forced to watch Dr. Phil….. Comcast, if you are reading this, don’t let Leo out of your sight…. HE IS TECHTV… We know it, and hopefully YOU know it….

  16. The ipod mini I ordered eons ago finally shipped. There’s tons of stuff I don’t know about itunes. I tend to learn by osmosis. That’s one of the reasons I watch your shows. Your the one person I can listen to who doesn’t make it painful. Keep up the effort Leo and your fans will stick by you no matter where you go. Taking it to bill might not be the best answer but I think it would be poetic justice as far as paul goes.

  17. Love you Leo! Rock on!

  18. I just read that CFH will no longer be. I can’t even tell you how upset I am. I will miss you and I will also miss Cat, Roger, Fawn and everyone else who works so hard to make it such a great show to watch. My husband, who won’t even turn on our PC, likes the show.
Thanks, Leo, and everyone there for helping me with my confuser. I can only hope that they will see what a mistake they’ve made and put you back on the air. I, too, will boycott.

  19. Leo, get a job….
Look if guys like David Lawerence, and the guy who took over your old radio show can get away with what they’re doing, you should be top dollar back in radio…have them run a T1 out to Bennett Valley and do the show from home…
Stay home and watch the kids…you’ve earned it…let those guys like Martin Sargent and the others fight for the covented TV roles…you’re the king of radio…
Hey you could even do the show in your PJ’s and nobody would know…

  20. Leo I hope they realize the huge mistake they are making by canceling CFH and wake up before the 21st of May. Everybody on this site needs to go to the merger site and send them feedback about their decision to cancel CFH. Go right now please:

  21. When Yahoo is going to up the storage limit?
The whole thing with Sasser being an accident because the guy is a bad programmer is pretty funny 😀
Once again, good luck with the whole job thing!!! I feel so bad for you guys, you had something great going and in an instant(well maybe not an instant) it was gone. Hate Comcast(surprised and happy that they kept eye drops…still hate them though).

  23. For those of us over 35 who aren’t gifted in the tech world, Leo you are a godsend. You are the reason I began watching TechTv in the first place. I truly hope you can find a way to return to the air on G4-TechTv. I live on the east coast and cannot get your radio show. I will truly miss you.

  25. Leo I believe they played you like a fiddle, and some of the notes where plucked by those you called friends. They didn’t want talent that wanted creative control and required higher salaries. They can now say that you weren’t a team player and was plain greedy. By the time they finish with those kids they’ll be happy to take a cut to keep a job. I know these types, they dangle the, “big”, future in front of you, while starving you today. Comcast might not pick you up, but Vulcan/TechTV stuck the knife in your back. Will the Vulcan execs get a nice bonus for dumping the network? Who in TechTV management will move on to LA? You stood by Pompey’s statue too long. Forget this mess and move on.

…who’s been living in a cave in Afghanistan for the past few months. Leo does his KFI gig over an ISDN line (with a Comrex or somethin’ similar), presumably in his undies. While the KFI web stream is nice, I’m still hoping Leo can get nationwide distribution on Sirius or XM, which have lots of tech-savvy early adopters on their subscription rolls.

  27. Leo, I doubt if it will do any good, but I just sent an email to g4/techTV with the subject line, “Why No ‘Call for Help?'”
I may not be watching TechTV any longer. The only other program I watched was “Screensavers,” and I’m not happy with the program in its current form. Thank you for many hours of entertainment and education, I hope you’ll be back on TV in some form or another.

  28. Over the last few months a flurry of familiar faces have silently vanished from tech tv. Most notably Michaeala although at least she said goodbye. Most of my favorites are gone. If the best people get fired or lured away what’s the point in watching? Leo’s the reason I started watching this station and it’s only fitting he’s why I quit. I’ll watch the last week of call for help period. Comcast can cram their new channel. Heck I can’t think of why I need the box any longer. I might as well drop back to basic. It’s been a great ride Leo. Thanks for all the laughs and memorable moments not to mention the many tips you’ve passed on through the years. Please let us know when you get your next gig. I’m sure we’ll all tune in to watch our old friend.

  29. Leo,
Thank you 4 being a godsend on CFH! I have a dish Network PVR and have been recording repeats since the announcement of the TechTV firings. Other than the 21st, will there be ANY new CFH’s before the last show?
    Tell Alex I said hello….
I hope you end up on another tech show that I can get with my dish….
Good luck & May The Force Be With You!

  30. Thanks for all the hard work. If it wasn’t for CFH, I’d still be using my old nasty computer, cursing at it’s stupid blue screen of death! I found your station, and then found out what was available, and what to look for in a good reliable computer. Thanks for all the work you’ve done over the last six years. I’ve been there every day (wow! I really DON’T have a life, do I?) for the past three of them.
    Live long and prosper!

  31. Hi Leo, Hope to see you back on a tech show soon. We always watched you in Chicago at dinner time. It won’t be the same without you and I probably won’t ever eat the same again. I don’t like the kiddy replacements they have pasted over you on the Screen Savers either. Don’t watch the show any more.
    My Best – Jim

  32. Leo,
I am a 47 year old male from Virginia and I normally don’t take the time to express my opinions to television networks but I made an exception in your case. I think that, regardless of which show you hosted, you were the driving force behind its success. I understand the need to shape networks to appeal to certain demographics but I think they missed the boat in your case. My 20 year old son, who is a college student, enjoyed your shows as much as my wife and I. I think that, when it comes to teaching and learning, the ability to entertain and educate crosses over the generations. Please don’t forget about your loyal fans in the east as you plan for your future. I hope to see you in my living room again really soon.

  33. Dear Leo,
I just found out that Call For Help has been cancelled. How very sad and disappointed am I. Tech-Tv has made a huge mistake. Call For Help is tops. And there is no Tech-Tv or Call For Help
with Leo Laporte. I sent an email to Tech-Tv today expressing my views and disappointment. Leo, if you are leaving Tech-Tv entirely I am sure another cable station would create a show just for you. I would love to see a show that devoated eqaul time to the PC as well as the MAC. You could do it. Your admiring viewers would surely follow you, Leo. You are a most talented, knowledgeable and gregarious person.

  34. Hi Leo, I’m from Malaysia and the only way I get to see you in on CFH and TSS. You’re a wonderful host so I sincerely hope you could be back on air again soon. Take care and prayers for you, your family and the TechTV staff.
