Tax Day Tirade

All the news that's fit to rant aboutIt’s Tax Day. I got far enough along on my return to know I won’t owe anything so I’m mailing in the extension to take the pressure off. I’ll finish in the next couple of days anyway. Good to have some extra time to fantasize about how to spend the refund before I apply it to groceries.

The RMS Titanic went down on this day in 1912 taking 1500 souls to the bottom of the Atlantic.

The first McDonalds opened in Des Plaines, Illinois, on this day in 1955. Happy birthday Leonardo DaVinci.

  1. Inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, received recognition today by winning the first Finland Millennium Technology Prize worth $1.2 million Finnish Innovation Award.

  2. Amazon’s in the search engine business. It’s new A9 site went online today. It’s very similar to Google (but with a peach colored background instead of white) and it ought to be – since the web search is Google powered – but there are some nice additions like search history and search book results. There’s a Google-style A9 toolbar, too. It works best if you already have an Amazon.com account, but who doesn’t?
  3. Hallelujah! The FTC has announced it’s going to probe spyware. There will be a hearing in DC on Monday. This may be the first step is regulating the out of control spyware plague. The FTC has also adopted new rules regulating sexually explicit spam. Such email must contain the words SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT: in the subject line. I know that would get my attention.
  4. According to the New York Times, Real Networks is seeking to ally with Apple in an “anti-microsoft front.” Ick. Apple already has Quicktime and AAC, can’t see what Real brings to the table. According the the leaked email from Real CEO Rob Glaser, if Steve Jobs isn’t interested Real could pursue some “very interesting opportunities” with Microsoft. Rob musn’t know Steve very well.
  5. Meanwhile Apple’s earnings reports are out. Last quarter’s earning were three times higher than the year before, with revenues up 29%. The company shipped more iPods than computers for the first time ever.
  6. For copyright reasons, Lindows will be re-dubbed Linspire in Europe. How Linsipid.

  1. aww cmon leo, you have plenty of money to pay someone to do your own taxes. on the other hand mine are so easy it takes me about 20 mins to do them

  2. hey leo
so glad that yuopu are in good spirits. i wanted to ask you where you got your “on this day” info.
    Thank you in advance.

  3. The McDonald brothers opened their first of several restaurants in So. Cal in the late forties. Ray Kroc was the shake machine salesman, and bought them out. The restaurant mentioned is one of his.

  4. Hey Leo, glad to see I’m not the only one sweating over tax forms today. I don’t owe squat either… didn’t think about filing an extension though. Hmmm. Just what the procrastinator in me needs, more time to do what I should have done already!
LOL.. a new show in the works?
“Today on The TaxSavers, I’ll teach you how to put off doing your taxes until the last possible moment, and then some!”
Would love to chat some more, but I’m supposed to be looking for the tax form from my mortgage lender right now. (hahahaha – see?)
I’ve been up way too long… does it show?

  5. Leo this is getting tiresome. I can’t watch TechTV,the only channel I did watch because the children tend to annoy me. Norton is ok, but he always acts like he needs a good laxative. It’s also affecting my digestion and sex life. If you don’t get back on the air soon I’ll need extra medication. Maalox is cheap, but that damn Viagra is expensive.

  6. “Welcome to ‘Call For Help’.. I’m Cat Schwartz … and I’m Roger Chang. We’re filling in for Leo who’s still away tending to the harvest.”

  7. I just found (figured) out your no longer with TechTv. This makes me very sad seeing I’ve been watching you on that channel for years and years now, way back to the days of ZDTV! I have a lot of reading to do to catch up with what is happening there, but I saw something about G4 taking over and I hope when they do your bright smiling and witty persona will permeate their existence! It’s their loss, really! It’s hard to find someone with your charisma and natural on air capabilities. Too bad they pulled some fast sh*t on you. Rock on, hope to see you on air again soon!

  8. Oh, and p.s…
I added you to my blog roll so that I can keep up with what your up to. And thanks for entertaining me for so many years.

  9. I am actually quite releived to see Leo gone from TechTV. Not that I am happy that income is gone. I just think most of the techtv crew are very into themselves. Leo,m you need to get over yourself. While knowledgable, you tend to be very condescending. However, you are nowhere near as bad as Patrick. Patrick needs to act his age and trying to be hip little rich snots like Dan Huard, Kevin Rose and Sarah Lane. And he needs to get some jeans that fit (stop rolling up those damn jeans and wearing hip college shirts).
Leo, when you do land another tv gig, lighten up on the attempts at dry humor. Just answer the freggin questions and stay away from the “my brain is better than everyone elses.” Oh, and LET YOUR GUESTS TALK, DON”T INTERUPT THEM!

    Spoken like a true un-professional

  11. I am as well sorry to see you leave TechTV, though you annoy the snot out me from time to time, you do bring a personality and maturity that network lacks. W

  12. I know where that McDonalds in Des Plaines is! (I grew up a few suburbs over in Palatine. It’s @ Rand Rd [US12] and River Rd [US-45] if you’re wondering). It’s actually a museum now, iirc. (There’s an actual McD’s across the street)

  13. Frankly, I’m not happy that the government is getting involved in any aspect of the internet. The original premise was supposed to be that it wasn’t regulated or owned by any one entity. Well, we can see just how effective the “can spam” act was/is. What does the FTC think it can do? Install a “V-Chip” on every router?

  14. Oh Just what we needed. Microsoft and Real alliance. That must mean ony on thing… Invasion of the Real One Player Icons on new Windows PC’s!!! (now you know that michrosoft would get an antitrust case on this!)

  15. Leo, My hubby & I miss you like crazy. Donnie was the one who said you outta tune in to this guy. I had the pleasure on Aug 3, 2001 to speak with you on air. I still boast about it. Thanks for turning me into a geek. TechTv isn’t the same without you and that’s why I no longer watch. I sure hope the new company knows talent and class when it sees it and brings you aboard Leo. Then and only then will we return. Take care.

  16. Okay Leo its time to get a grip on things and do something fun —- TAXES. My mother does taxes. Real men don’t do no stinkin taxes.
Hope to see you on the tube soon.
    Jay D.

  17. Leo,
Don’t listen to the losers above with no sence of humor at all!! If people don’t like you or the show than why the hell are they even reading this or watching?? Losers….
As far as I am concerned..You were the whole dam show!! I like the others on the SceenSavers but call for help sucks sh*t now… They have lost tons of watchers by screwing you!! When you get another show–Keep making me laugh!!!! Even my wife–who is no techy at all loves to watch you!!
    Miss you Leo!!!!!
    Rich G

  18. I tried to remember what I didn’t like about Chris Pirillo when he hosted C4H. It took me less than 2 minutes to realize that drinking 20+ cups of coffee a day could turn anyone into someone who should not be near a computer. His humor (??) would stimulate someone in 5-8 year range (if that person was whacked on cola drinks).
Leo, you were the only host on C4H that I enjoyed. I am a Mac user, and even Chris Breen could not make me watch him for more than 5 minutes.
I wish you were back in front of the camera.

  19. Hey Leo,
I was happy to see Chris Pirillo back on the air “filling in for you”. At least they can get someone good on the show for the while that you are gone. All I can do is be very thankful for KFI’s live listen to radio feature. Hope you get back on the air soon. The Screen Savers in seeming very dry and stale now, there’s no…..flow with them anymore. And I know that you probably won’t be on TSS if you return, but I really hope I can see you on CFH.

  21. Leo, I was pleased to read that you will soon be back on the tech tv channel in some capacity. You should be on air and still be hosting both shows. CFH & SS were the reason I pay for cable.
Please don’t go away even if the new owners give you a bunch of crap. Keep the kids in line and help us new geek types.

The first McDonald’s franchise opens in Des Plains, a suburb of Chicago. Because it is the first one launched by Ray Kroc, he names it “McDonald’s #1” despite the fact that the McDonald brothers had already opened eight of their chain restaurants before they began accepting licensees. Kroc’s unfortunate numbering system guarantees perpetual confusion for amateur fast food historians the world over.
