End of Line

The party's over. After nearly ten years, four owners, well over 2000 live TV shows, lots of laughs, a few tears, and meeting many many wonderful people, my time at TechTV has come to an end.
I could tell so many stories about the talented, committed, hard working, and hard partying people I’ve worked with there. Each and every one of them will always have a special place in my life . It was with great sadness that I walked out the studio door for the last time last night.

The reasons for my leaving are complicated. As I posted here a few weeks ago, management and I had come to a very satisfactory agreement about a new work schedule and salary, but at the last minute TechTV’s outgoing owner, Vulcan Ventures, insisted that I sign away all claims against them regarding shares they had given me some years ago. I was unwilling to do so, and they held my job as hostage.

My leaving has nothing to do whatever with G4 or Comcast. In fact, I’m very sorry that I won’t be around to participate in the transition. I’ve already contacted G4 to let them know I’d be glad to continue working at the new channel once they take over and I hope that I’ll get that chance.

Fortunately I still have a great job at KFI, a sweet book contract with Que, this thriving web site, and many requests for speeches and other appearances. My family will not starve, and I will be keeping very busy no matter what happens.

Call for Help will continue on the air without me. George Crowe, Dan Mitchell, Fawn Luu, Roger Chang, Cat Schwartz, and Ian the new guy, whose last name I still can’t spell, are still there working their tails off to do the best show on TechTV for the least amount of money. Nicole Guilfoyle and Rich Miglozzi are still slaving away to make the web site the best resource ever. Steve Porter, Rob D’Arcy, Bill Coen, Josh Villegas, Raevon Armand, Deb Croback, Jon Martin, Greg Tremelling, Brett, Fatty Matty, David Chung, Jim Smith and the best studio crew in the world are still there keeping things running light without overbyte. Please keep watching.

For the second time in as many weeks I find myself saying goodbye. My spirits were buoyed with the hundreds of wonderful messages I got last week. It’s so gratifying to know that the work we’ve done has made such a big difference in so many people’s lives. With apologies to Lou Gehrig, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I won’t be on TV for a little while. But I do hope we’ll see each other again on the small screen some day. Until then, thanks for an incredible 10 years. I’ll miss you.

  1. Leo – Please know that I have written TechTV and it’s parent company to express my displeasure with your situation. TechTV is slowly losing its professional appeal by staffing its shows with inexperienced reporters. (Not that I don’t appreciate the current staff – but balance is a precious commodity.) I hope to find you on air again soon. You are the best Tech Reporter in the nation!

  2. Leo,My wife and I feel privilleged to have seen you live on the Screen Savers before you left. Call for Help and the Screensavers are still OK, but somehow it just isn’t quite the same without you. We hope to see you on TV again soon.
Best of luck to you in your future endeavors.

  3. Leo, my father, stepmom, and I have all watched your show as long as the station has been TechTV and even when it was ZDTV. We have lots of fun watching the show, and you will be sadly missed… :’). Over the past few years you have practically been a member of our household. You have tought us many things, especially since I’m eighteen and going to colleg. Every night at 7 you were at our house during dinner. All I have to say is that you will be greatly missed. This is a very sorrowful day. I just have to say 2 words…Thank you!

  5. We will all miss you leo, hopefull your site will be just as useful as your segments on Tech TV. I will be sure to look for you and check your website frequently.
    With Best of Luck

  6. I miss you Leo! I love you too.
They should have given you the whole company rather than let you go.
(I miss Kate too. She was my queen.)
I have never written to anyone like this before except to Morgan but that was just to ask her to marry me. Of course I was compelled to ask her because she is just so wonderful in every way. You are wonderful too but I think I will just wish you the very best instead of saying something crazy.
    God bless you Leo!

  7. I’ll miss you Uncle Leo 🙁 I actually feel a lil sad. I go off to vacation come back and my fav face to see every day is gone and theres some geeky stiff in his place. At first i thought ok leo’s on a trip again, then i heard him say he’ll be back tomarrow, so i went to tech tv. I was shocked. You’ve taught me so much about computers. You’ve felt like a lil bit of family to me. Its awful that they can legally do that to u. Boo them. They say theres a reason why things like this happen. Maybe theres more instore for our Uncle Leo. I personally will suport and follow you. I think our devotion is appropriate for all you’ve given us. Thank you SO much.

  8. Leo I ahve parted company with TechTV. My entire club here in Va (125 members) have deactivated our techtv accounts and are boycotting anything and everything assoiated with the channel.
Maybe within a short time the Channel execs will get the message and bring you back

  9. Leo,
I’ve been watching you on Call for Help and The Screen Savers like what seem forever. The shows just won’t be the same. You will surely be missed.

  10. Leo,
As a loyal viewer of TTV it’s going to be sad to see you go. I’ve enjoyed watching you (and your numerous counterparts) have a great time over the years and it’s most definitely not going to be the same experience without your very humorous antics and thoughful insights.
Theres really not much more one can say to someone they have never met. But please, always do your best and enjoy the life you have. Spend some time with your kids and just keep being yourself. Please write more books because your first one was great! Also if you decide to stay off television, good luck with everything you wish to accomplish in life, you’re a great person.

  11. I tuned to Call For Help for the first time in a while this evening and saw that Chris P was back on the air. I knew something was up. I have just found your web site and your description of what has happeded. Leo, I want you to know that Tech TV has lost the best host they had. You brought class and entertainment to a very non-exciting subject. Computers. You’re intellect and recall was amazing and I for one will miss you very much. I will probably stop watching altogether now. I will pray that you get a much better position very soon. Thank you for giving me a good education in technology for the years I have watched you!

  12. I have enjoyed Screen Savers and Call For Help, hosted by Leo. I finally realized Leo was gone. It’s not the same watching these programs without Leo. Thanks for your knowledge and the good times, Leo…….. Please bring him back………

  13. TSS and Call for Help is just not the same without you. Kinda the reason why I now rarely watch TSS and Call for Help. The only show I watch now is TechLive on Tech TV. I hope to see you back on Tech TV.

  14. TechTV will never be the same without you Leo. All the members of TSS and CFH seemed like they were all a big family and you was the father. The father that they need to make them complete and to steer them in the right direction. I say that because the rest of the members are good also, but incomplete without you. When I watch either show, it’s like looking at a family portrait but one of the family members has been torn out. Now when I watch either show I feel an emptiness and sad for their and our loss. I literally feel like crying.

  15. Leo.
I too started to watch Tech TV as soon as it was made available on cable in San Jose. I looked forward to watching and learning from you on The Screen Savers and Call For Help. I’m going to miss your wit and sense of humor. I however feel that cool heads will prevail and you will be back if not on Tech TV, some other channel. In the meantime we all miss you.
    Bill in San Jose.

  16. Leo –
I’ve been a huge fan of yours every since I’ve watched Tech TV (2+ years). I’m extremely sad that you’re no longer on the channel. To me, you are/were the Heart and Soul of TSS/CFH. You were so fun to watch and I thought your advice was right on too. While I like the current TSS cast, it was you who made it special. I really enjoyed watching you and Patrick host the show. It’s not the same now that you’re gone (no disrespect to Patrick). In fact, you were the only reason why my Dad (who’s in his mid 60’s), watched TechTV. Me being selfish, I can only hope that they will bring you back soon. More importantly though, I hope you stick to your guns and do whatever your heart tells you. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and only hope I can become, not only a great tech guru as yourself, but also the fine human being that you are. Good luck in life. I wish you the best!
    –Jim
If any employees from TechTV, G4, or Comcast read this, “BRING LEO BACK!!”

  17. First Pirillo leaves now Leo. Gee Whiz.
I hope things work out for you Leo.
There are very few folks that are regulars on the small screen in my living room.
You and your cohorts at TechTV always teach me something and make me laugh.
I am always bummed when someone with your talent gets a raw deal.

  18. Leo,
You did the right thing. Those idiots at Vulcan had no right to ask you to relinquish what they had already given to you. They might as well have asked for all your paychecks back.
Anyway, I have no doubt that as soon as Comcast takes over you will be back on the TV.
Thanks for all your help and insight over the years.

  19. My my my, what a shame. I find this to be one of the saddest events on TV since I got my cable a little over a month ago. Can’t say I’m glad to see ya go, Leo, but then, would you really want to hear that?
I don’t know what I’ll miss more: You, the actual person, of what you did to bring a sense of laughter into my life. It was your crazy, near idiotic, and often hilarious stunts that set me in a good mood after a long and often exhaustive day. It was your answers to questions, you unique insight, and those days you forgot to take a pill. That last one was hilarious: You were a loose cannon of fun and laughter, and that will surely be missed.
However, while you may be missed, “the show must go on”…. or so they tell us. Good luck wherever you go, dear host, and may you tread straight paths, those where you will always have a sun shining on your back, and a smile in your heart.

  20. I enjoyed you, Leo in the early years, but towards the end it was hard to watch. When any questions on TSS were asked, he would “step on” / talk over the co-host and keep talkng and talking. I got bored with the book promotions and ok, you were on with Regis and Kelly….. So I heard, again and again. I repect that you have the know how and been in the entertainment biz for a long time, but less is more…..
Good Luck, I did learn alot. You will be back.

  21. I Can’t bieleve your gone!!!! but i understand why
5 years ago i was flipping through direc tv chanels and stumbled on the chanel that kept me interested and stopped me from flipping channels the man on the tv…Leo Laporte……
I Hope hope comes back Thanks For All the good times and the things i have learned over the years

  22. I’m going to be in SFO next week on a layover and thought about trying to get tickets to TSS to meet you. Sorry to hear you’re not there anymore. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of you somewhere else. Good luck and thanks for the computer help. Mac

  23. No one can replace you. You were the wisest and had the most stage presence out of everyone. I can’t even believe I am writing this. You are the heart of Techtv and I still can’t get a hold of the fact that you will not be there on The Screen Savers anymore. I am glad this comment is in a long line of similar comments, you will be missed. We will be visiting Leoville more often. I hope we will see you again on TV, good luck Leo. It was a great time, thanks.

  25. Leo,
Thanks, for the memories! It is hard to find people these days that will stand tall and do the right thing! I don’t understand Corporate America’s mentality anymore. I had to come here to find out what I presumed happened. You are the only T.V. Personality with any personality! I know you shall do well my friend, so Godspeed!

  26. Leo
What can I say? I thought that you were on vacation and I find out that you are gone for good! I can’t get use to watching TSS without you. Goodluck in whatever you do.
    Hal2

  27. I took a vacation, came back and no LEO!!! Vulcan should really get thier act together! That was a bad tactical move on thier part. We’ll miss you Leo… you were the bright shining star of my day for a long time. Good on you for standing for your rights!

  28. While i never much cared for Leo hosting at first, he’s grown on me and while i do like Kevin as the co-host of tss it’s just not the same. Call for help well i don’t even watch it anymore i can’t stand the nomadic hosts. One day it’s Cat and Roger who don’t have the enthusiam that Leo did, to this morning, Chris Periolo is hosting the show again, what’s with that, he left 2 years ago. Anyways, thanks Leo for the great TV, we’ll see you on something bigger, and better soon.

  29. leo-please come back– i really enjoyed the charisma and knowledge you brought to both shows!!!Whatever G4 is, please, please, please……..

  30. This is a very very bad day for me now. I can’t even get his radio station. That was very mean of those tech tv people to do that. If anything I would give him a rise. All they spend there money on is computers. I know they need those but they are wasting money of hundreds of thousands of computers. This is bad. Goodbye Leo.

  31. I can’t believe management treated you so badly that you had to leave the channel.
I was very surprised and disappointed when I saw the new opening credits of “The Screen Savers” and your face wasn’t there as a host. You were the show; it’s not the same with out you.

  33. Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish!! Get a life laporte!! You’ve grown into an ego maniac and your getting what you deserved. When I first started watching your shows many years ago, prior to your current money grubbing days, your were very enjoyable to watch. These past years on TechTV, you’ve become a money grubbing, egotistical tyrant! If I never see another commercial for one of your books I’ll die a happy person!

  34. CRUSHED.
I don’t get to see the show often enough because of work. I thought you were on a vacation. I am happy that you can stick it to corperate america and not let them push you around. You are missed daily. I still watch the shows but it is and will not be the same. YOU are Call FOR HELP and SCREEN SAVERS.

  35. Hey Leo,
Just read your words on why you left suddenly. What a bummer, but have to say, this is what we can expect from corporate America these days. Just seems most companys want and demand their employees loyality and offer nothing in return. It’s said but true, it’s no longer a two way path, it’s all gone the way of “customer support” these days…. The world is changing, we all have to watch our backs and keep or resumes updated…. Good luck, I hear you on KFI with Bill on Friday mornings…

  36. What a class act! Your talent to merge tech and straight talk can never be matched. Hurry back soon. Isn’t it amazing how corporate America keeps tripping over itself. Wake up corporations and start having some fun like Leo.

  37. No wonder Vulcan Ventures is the outgoing owner of Techtv, with business moves like this. You will be missed leo, I hope the executives at G4 relize how bad of a move this is and rehire you. Good luck Leo, and God Bless

  38. Leo, wow. I know this probably seems like ancient history here, but Tech TV just lost(i dont mean to sound duragatory by this) their mascot. You’re the face of Tech TV. I’m sure that the channels seen a huge ratings drop from us. You were the reason why most of us watched the shows. I can only hope that G4 hires you once Tech TV and Comcast merge. If they don’t they’re wasting a great TV personality.
Good luck Leo with whatever you do and I hope to see you back on TV

  39. Leo,
I just met you in February when I attended the RSA Conference and I played UT2004 the first day you had it!! It was SOOOO great meeting you before you left and I hope you do well and come back to TV soon!!!! We’ll get you to broadcast at Kennedy Space Center, NASA sometime with someone!!!

  40. We need to start a petition that G4 hire you back or no-one will watch TechTV!!!!!!!!!! LEO START A PETITION PAGE!!!!!!!!

  41. I’m dumbfounded…. The Techtv link is no longer on my site. And they’ve gotten an email from me. They’ve made a big mistake. We’ll really miss you Leo.

  42. We just found you! This can’t happen. We need you.
Look, whatever happens for you in the future you are going to do wonderful. You have what it takes and all of us who are your ‘fans’ know it, you should too. It’s very sad that the ‘team’ had to get wiped out. We viewed you and Patrick as a team. My husband and I both think a great deal of you. We learned a lot after a long hiatus from techie life.
    Thanks.
    All the best, Leo.

  43. hey..guess i am a little slow..i too thought that you were just on another junket related to the show…’course it didn’t help the other day to hear cat or one of them say that you were ‘planting’ at your farm..so ..i thought that you would be back. this also sort of explains why i didn’t get responses to my email requests re: an episode where you had info on email on your web site and how to block spammers. miss you tremendously. cat et al are doing a good job…but there is no replacement for your wonderful and outgoing personality and the excitement and interest that you engender/communicate on all things tech. and i don’t even have an apple :). take care..and i add my vote>>>comcast if you are reading these logs…BRING LEO BACK!!!!!!! ASAP!!! bye leo…not much of a tv viewer…stumbled onto tech tv during a transitional period during a recent move [home to home] …sigh! guess i will now get more work done…the show is ok w/out you but i can catch up by going online…won’t miss anything by taking an early am walk instead of sitting in front of the tube with my mocha…bye bye—-pam – an avid fan of your broadcast style and your wonderful wonderful personality

  44. Leo,
All of us fans will miss you greatly. Thank you for being a teacher and educator to so many of us. Because of your dedication to Call For Help and The Screen Savers, thousands of us have learned a myriad of useful and important things about our technological devices. Over the years you have become almost like a family member to many of us faithful viewers. We will support you in whatever the future will bring. Again, thank you and good luck in your future endeavors.

  45. NO NO NO! This can’t happen. I watched CFH today and it was deja vu of those fingernails-on-blackboard days of the last time this ADHD kid tired to fill Leo’s shoes. He couldn’t do it then and sure as hell can’t do it now.
Been a loyal fan for 7 years but until Leo is reinstated, I am unsubscribing to news letters and deleting TechTV from my DirecTV menu.
Please keep us informed on your whereabouts, Leo, for I will follow you anywhere! My fullest support in whatever it takes to get you back on the small screen.

  46. Sorry to hear Leo and TechTV have parted company. TechTV was why I loved my digital TV service, and Leo was why I loved TechTV.
If MSNBC were smart, they would snatch Leo while they could and launch an upscale, weekly 1 hour version of a Screen Savers, called “Open Your Windows” where Leo could devote a half hour to newbies and casual users, and a half hour to more sophisticated or power users. Running this nationally on weekend mornings would probably triple their market share!
    Good Luck Leo!
    Jim

  47. Leo, have only had satalite for a couple of months, tryed to watch when i could for years only seeing you every few months. I remember the days of ZDTV (just before they became Tech TV).Thought you were on vacation, but tired of waiting and found your gone, best of luck. The bad part is I was going to be going on vacation there with my family and wanted to stop by. !Crosed that off my list! Sure the others are great, but your that peice that without it slowly falls apart.
    See ya!

  48. I’m sad to learn that you have left the show, I have watched you many a times (last 5 years). I hope the new owners will see a true asset you are in everything tech. I have learned much from TechTV and use what I have learned to teach and help others.
Its just not the same with Kevin at the helm with Patrick. Good luck in your adventures.

  49. You will be missed. Your information has helped me keep my computer safe, keep her healthy, and keep her working.
I sincerly hope that you will return.
You and your family have always been and will always be in my prayers.
Thank you for all your hard work, time, and advice.
