End of Line

The party's over. After nearly ten years, four owners, well over 2000 live TV shows, lots of laughs, a few tears, and meeting many many wonderful people, my time at TechTV has come to an end.
I could tell so many stories about the talented, committed, hard working, and hard partying people I’ve worked with there. Each and every one of them will always have a special place in my life . It was with great sadness that I walked out the studio door for the last time last night.

The reasons for my leaving are complicated. As I posted here a few weeks ago, management and I had come to a very satisfactory agreement about a new work schedule and salary, but at the last minute TechTV’s outgoing owner, Vulcan Ventures, insisted that I sign away all claims against them regarding shares they had given me some years ago. I was unwilling to do so, and they held my job as hostage.

My leaving has nothing to do whatever with G4 or Comcast. In fact, I’m very sorry that I won’t be around to participate in the transition. I’ve already contacted G4 to let them know I’d be glad to continue working at the new channel once they take over and I hope that I’ll get that chance.

Fortunately I still have a great job at KFI, a sweet book contract with Que, this thriving web site, and many requests for speeches and other appearances. My family will not starve, and I will be keeping very busy no matter what happens.

Call for Help will continue on the air without me. George Crowe, Dan Mitchell, Fawn Luu, Roger Chang, Cat Schwartz, and Ian the new guy, whose last name I still can’t spell, are still there working their tails off to do the best show on TechTV for the least amount of money. Nicole Guilfoyle and Rich Miglozzi are still slaving away to make the web site the best resource ever. Steve Porter, Rob D’Arcy, Bill Coen, Josh Villegas, Raevon Armand, Deb Croback, Jon Martin, Greg Tremelling, Brett, Fatty Matty, David Chung, Jim Smith and the best studio crew in the world are still there keeping things running light without overbyte. Please keep watching.

For the second time in as many weeks I find myself saying goodbye. My spirits were buoyed with the hundreds of wonderful messages I got last week. It’s so gratifying to know that the work we’ve done has made such a big difference in so many people’s lives. With apologies to Lou Gehrig, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I won’t be on TV for a little while. But I do hope we’ll see each other again on the small screen some day. Until then, thanks for an incredible 10 years. I’ll miss you.

  1. Screen Savers and Call for Help will no longer be watched in this house! Without Leo, it isn’t any fun anymore! I hope Comcast is smarter than Vulcan and hires you back, Leo. If and when they do we will again tune in…until then forgetit!

  2. Thank you for coming into my living room and giving me great tips, and entertainment!
You will be missed.. I live on the east coast, whenever I travel to the west coast I always have and always will tune into your radio show..
    Take care 🙂

  3. The suits always show their true colors. We were right about them back in college forty years ago.
We all know you could go to work for a major network tomorrow if you didn’t love nocal so much. Hope this doesn’t hit the family budget too hard, it will only be temporary. We’ll keep you in our prayers.

  4. Leo,
You have been an inspiration for THOUSANDS of people!!! You should be very proud of yourself, and i am so glad that you KNOW that you have touched many lives!! I am going to find a mass movement on the internet that will ensure that comcast signs you back on for EVERY PENNY you are worth, because without you leo, TechTV simply will NEVER be the same. They had better not make money a huge issue here, because you are Mr. TechTV, and I cannot see myself watching nearly as much without you there. If I cannot find such an internet movement, I will create one. Thousands of people will write to comcast, letting them know our position on them hiring Leo Laporte. I’m sure they know what you are worth, and I’ll bet the appreciate it!!!! They are not buying TechTV for nothing! They will realize that without you, the ratings will never be the same! We’ll band together and show you how much your 10 years with us has meant! We wont let the happiness end! We’ll show you how much you are appreciated, because WE appreciate you…. and comcast knows it… without US…. where will they be? Best of luck to you Leo, You’ve meant Alot to all of us… and Thank you for your 10 years of dedicated service. Because of you, whenever my personal confuser gets me down… i don’t whine, moan or yell…. I CALL FOR HELP!!!!!
    Sincerely,
    Alex Morrow

  5. What a damned shame to see the life being sucked out of Tech Tv
Leo, you had me at hello
now I wait to hear you again
please Tech Tv get your Shiznit together and get Leo THe Door back on
    my tv!
    Kevin

  6. all I can say is wow! this really sucks. when TSS was changed from the 1.5hr show lengths I could handle that (it is my favourite show on techTV), but now with no Leo… I don’t know what to do. The ‘Dynamic Duo’ of Leo and Pat is no more, as is my faith in TechTV.
Best of luck to you Leo, we’ll all miss you.

  7. I was hoping that was a late April Fool’s joke. I was such a fan back in ZDTV days that when Kate left Leo on TSS, I teared up a bit. I still watched the show, but it kinda went from a must-see every day during the live show, to bottom of my Tivo’s Season Pass list that would catch it when nothing else was on since I enjoyed the tech news and product info segments. Well now that they screwed over Leo, forget that even. The only good thing left on TechTV is that goof-ily hottie, Chris Leary.
Any chance of a ‘Kate and Leo’ return on the new channel? Now that just brings a smile to my face thinking about it:)

  8. I did not realize you were gone until yesterday.I was driving from Show Low AZ to Barstow(Wher eI heard you) and was listening to KFI and you had your interview with Steve Gibson. GREAT CONTENT!! I can’t get you out here(Show Low Arizona). Can I call my radio station to recommend a feed from your radio show? Well all the best to you Leo. Sure will miss the freindly face and insight on technology.

  9. Dear Leo,
I will truly miss you,I started watching you when Kate was your sidekick.
Thanks to you I built my first computer back in ’98, and it actually booted up, then I looked at the ‘Windows’ screen and said “now what”. I had to set my VCR to record shows when I was at work, no Tivo at the time. I really hope to see you on the small screen again, until then I will watch Techtv
    sparingly.(sniff).
    A Devoted Fan,
    Joe

  10. I refuse to watch another Screensaver show without Leo. I go back to when he was with Kate. I am appalled. That network has lost so many good people. It is not the same. Leo is incredibly talented and he will show up somewhere. He is a pro. Good luck my friend. See you soon.

  11. I am devasted. Leo, you are my hero and the major reason that I’ve watched TechTV. I have fond regards for Kevin and Yoshi, but you were the spark that kept Patrick smiling and me along with it. Is there anything that we can do – mass email the network? do a buyout? ???
It just won’t be the same…

  12. Leo is the best thing that ever, ever!, happened to TechTv. I am very upset with TechTV, and simple text can not express my feelings. When Leo left The Screen Savers, I was devastated, Pat was the rock their, and Leo was the heart, but I was reassured by his Call for Help. Now TechTV has cast off one of its Kings! What in the world! Leo Laporte is like the Mr Rogers (and I mean than in the best of ways I swear) of Tech. He’s the best man out there, and there will never be another like him. He is the reason I now know how to master my computer, and noone can solve problems like Leo. This is a crucible that TechTV put itself in. Let’s only hope that they can get through it.
I’ll close with this; Leo Laporte was the one reason I watched TechTV, and now the channel is like a ship without its captain, I only hope that they see the error in their ways and put a good and honorable man back where he belongs!

  13. Leo watching Call for Help and ScreenSavers now reminds me of the time the nfl players went on strike. It looks similar but with the replacements its just not the same game. Those two shows were the only TV I watched every day. Im still watching for now but I’m waiting for them to put the wiley old quaterback in to save the game. At first I was worried that comcast would take TechTV off DirectTV. Now it may not matter. I hope that the new owners realize why Tech had the viewers they did. Good Luck Leo

  14. Hey Leo, as a broadcaster who has gone through many ownership and format changes and a fan of the Screen Savers I will miss you. The show will not be the same. Hopefully the new owners will see the light and get you back were you belong! A Fan and fellow geek!~

  15. I’ve watched Leo since it was Leo & Kate. I still miss Kate, but enjoyed TSS with Patrick. Now TTV has just lost its best host. The “kidz” are fine, but Leo is(was) the heart of that network and I won’t be watching any more TTV shows. TSS was really the only show I watched there anyway. BTW — the gaming show, the robot show, and the anime junk are the main reason I stopped leaving my TV on TTV most of the day. Also, I like(d) Martin Sargent, but his Unscrewed show is just utter trash!
Leo: wherever you go, we will follow! 😉

  16. I have watched TechTV formerly ZDTV since the first day you DirecTV carried your channel. Over the years it has always been a treat to tune in on a daily basis to watch The Screen Savers and often Call For Help. Thank-you Leo for spending all of the time that you have putting these shows together. In a world full of so many self interested people, you have given life to the joy of sharing.
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

  17. Leo, from all the geeks in Hillsdale MI, we will miss you. I have been watching TechTV for a couple of years now, and have enjoyed your hosting the most, it just won’t be the same without you. Thank you for your work there and good luck on future adventures. I’m kinda bummed I didn’t get to see you live 🙂

  18. Leo you are the best and I hope to see you again on TV. I’m a busy man and at times I miss TSS for awhile(thank God for re-runs and re-plays). I tuned in today to see what’s going on and you were not there, which was fine because I’m use to you doing things that would pull you way from the show. Then I find out you are no longer a part of Tech TV. It came as a shock, but I understand the reasons. I want you to know I’ll misssssss you very much. I never got to call in, but I had enjoyed your advise. I feel like I had just lost a friend I knew for ever. I have a little 2 year old who use to love to see you on TV. You and her favorite cartoon would make her stop what she was doing and watch until you were off. I’ll be a fan forever.
    Phillip

  19. ya no leo
i wish him the best waht every he does
but cat and rogers or grest host and love to see them

  20. I am very sad that I won’t be seeing you on TSS. I feel like I lost a father…you are the few person, I think the only one that I can feel the sincerity and dedication on what you are doing. You shared a part of you…I can feel the sadness each time a show ends..but damn this time it’s truly the end. I can’t express the gratitude and how much you’ll be miss.
I understand your decision, but I hope to see you soon…as they say, see you when I see you.

  21. I have come to realy enjoy watching and learning from all the folks at TTV, but Leo especially. Your wonderful, genuine, attitude mixed with incredible knowledge has made daily television more than background noise. I hope I get to learn from you again in the future. Untill then and just in case I thank you.
    Chris

  23. From all the viewers in Canada.Just when we were becoming computer geeks our professor has left the building.
Tech TV will not be the same and I would be interested to see the viewer ratings now.Leo you are one of a select group that can inspire people.Hope to see you real soon.

  24. All of the above. Long time viewer. The others are OK but no sizzle.
I have been going the TSS and Call for Help shows. After a few minutes with no Leo….just changed the channel.
Don’t know what Leo’s Magic is, but it is a big loss to the viewers.

  25. THIS IS A SAD DAY FOR ME.LEO IS TECH TV.
YOU REALLY EXPLAIN THE COMPLICATED AND MAKE IT EASY TO UNDERSTAND.
    IT IS SAD,SAD,SAD.

  26. Leo,
Words can’t describe how much you will be missed in my house. Its more than you will ever know. I give you and John C. Dvorak alot of credit for helping in teaching Tyler to talk. He was 3 months from Kindergarden and couldn’t talk more than 2 word sentences. Tyler has ADD and his poor mind was was thinking so far ahead he couldn’t get the words out. But watching You and the rest of the Tech Tv staff he would mimic what you said on the air. He is now a 4th grade honor student. He still talks about the trips we have made to S.F. to see you at the Screen Savers studio. We hope that things will work out that we get to see you on the air again REAL soon. Until then we’ll catch you on the radio!!!!
    Best Wishes

  27. We love you Leo! I will always cherish all the shows I watched you on. You are definitely one of my all time fav! See you next time in whatever you do. 🙂

  28. THANKS-for all the memories and for all the FREE advise to everyone, it HELPed me LEARN more about computers than i would ever have. IT HELPED BRING this Farmboy out of the dark ages and into the light. GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE TO SEE YOU BACK SOME DAY, (THE WAY YOU WANT IT)

  29. Hey Leo,
I listen to your Radio show…and watched you on TSS and Call For Help. I was shocked to find you gone from TechTV…I went on vacation at the end of March and came back in the beginning of April to find you gone. At first I thought it was some sort of April Fool’s joke…much to my dismay, it wasn’t…
If G4 and Comcast know anything about good business, they won’t go a second without you…Good Luck 🙂

  31. Leo — You are the one who got me hooked on Tech TV.
Our family watched you every day on TSS and CFH. The network needs your talent.
You are missed already. I truly hope you are back on the the air soon.
Comcast has got to be smart enough to bring you back. Otherwise I will say adios to Tech TV.
    Good Luck

  32. Dear Leo, You’re the reason I’m sitting next to a computer I built myself. I used to come home from teaching in anticipation of seeing you on tss. No one will be able to interview like you; your interest in all subjects was apparent and you always asked the questions I would have. Remember Larry Niven? I could sense how excited you were to meet him. Boy, will miss you….

  33. Leo,
I think this decision is sort of like when Apple made that “round” mouse! ;(
I hope that the new owners will see the error and correct it. Whatever you do, make sure you get yourself shown on TV up here in Toronto, Canada!
    Best Wishes Eh!

  36. Although I never met Leo, he came into my house every day for the past 6 years, he was treated like a member of the family by myself, and my kids. He will be missed, but not forgotten. Leo please let us know how your career is going, and get back to doing what you do best, helping people ON THE AIR!
All our kindest thoughts and love.

  37. Leo,
We will all miss you. You brought not only sunshine (always smiling and happy) into a show that could go the way of the Dodo, but also expertise. Talking about (as you call it the “confuser”) is not easy to us newbies. Nothing against Kevin Rose, but only you and Patrick can be a team on the ScreenSavers. Hope to see you again sooooonnnn!!!!!!!
Keep on talking, writing and evangelizing computers. Especially the Macintosh.
Good luck to you and your family.

  38. Relativity new to TEC TV. Will miss it like Leo. The Kids that are on now are cool but there kids. Tec-TV needs Leo to give us a balance between cool, knowledge and experience. I have unsubscribed to all Tec TVs e-mail notifications; remove TEC TV from my favorites list on both my computer and TV. I have added Leo’s Web site in it place. I will add a blank station on my TV’s Favorites list to remind me wile surfing what I am missing.

  39. hi leo you are the coolest person in the whole world, i hope you get your job back. ttv hasent been the same without you. youve taught me so much and i want to thank you youve helped me build my computer. and you taught us in a fun way ,and i thank you, and any company who holds such a great person like you hostage over something as small as stocks is just stupid. i hope you get your job back but if not maybe when they merge with g4 youll get a job
best of luck in the years to come

  41. Not dissing on Pat or Kevin, but since you left the Screensavers, the show loss something. I think it was your witty personality, I hope the people that are buying Techtv realize what they lost and bring you back. Luckliy I am able to download the radio shows to still get my fill of Laporteisms. I hope they bring you back.

  42. yup, have to add a litle here, hope there will be some slot on the air I will be able to watch you,I have learned much from you.you remind me of myself, only a litle a litle younger,am still watching the shows but they are lacking, good luck leo bob andres

  43. Leo, you will be greatly missed and I hope the new owners have the common sense to bring you back on the air at TSS and CFH where you belong

  44. As a new viewer of Tech-Tv, I didn’t get it until last August 19, I found a show and a person I liked in The Screensavers and Leo. Now I will have to do without one of them, and the way it has been going, both of them. Leo brought an old school sense to a tragically new school industry. It just is’nt the same without him, no offense to Pat and Kevin, but damn, I’m going to miss you Leo. Shalom

  45. What WERE they thinking?!!? Leo gone?!? They just as well may have decided that TECHTV is gone!!!! This takes all the fun out of my 7 pm slot weeknights – I can’t imagine TSS or Call without our Silver Fox of Tech!!! I have to agree heartly with James the Gentile’s post. The show just will never be the same without Leo; much as we love Pat and the others….

  46. Been gone, just heard the news. 🙁
Thanks, Leo, for all your work – but don’t get too comfortable. We doubt if you’re done yet 🙂
