End of Line

The party's over. After nearly ten years, four owners, well over 2000 live TV shows, lots of laughs, a few tears, and meeting many many wonderful people, my time at TechTV has come to an end.
I could tell so many stories about the talented, committed, hard working, and hard partying people I’ve worked with there. Each and every one of them will always have a special place in my life . It was with great sadness that I walked out the studio door for the last time last night.

The reasons for my leaving are complicated. As I posted here a few weeks ago, management and I had come to a very satisfactory agreement about a new work schedule and salary, but at the last minute TechTV’s outgoing owner, Vulcan Ventures, insisted that I sign away all claims against them regarding shares they had given me some years ago. I was unwilling to do so, and they held my job as hostage.

My leaving has nothing to do whatever with G4 or Comcast. In fact, I’m very sorry that I won’t be around to participate in the transition. I’ve already contacted G4 to let them know I’d be glad to continue working at the new channel once they take over and I hope that I’ll get that chance.

Fortunately I still have a great job at KFI, a sweet book contract with Que, this thriving web site, and many requests for speeches and other appearances. My family will not starve, and I will be keeping very busy no matter what happens.

Call for Help will continue on the air without me. George Crowe, Dan Mitchell, Fawn Luu, Roger Chang, Cat Schwartz, and Ian the new guy, whose last name I still can’t spell, are still there working their tails off to do the best show on TechTV for the least amount of money. Nicole Guilfoyle and Rich Miglozzi are still slaving away to make the web site the best resource ever. Steve Porter, Rob D’Arcy, Bill Coen, Josh Villegas, Raevon Armand, Deb Croback, Jon Martin, Greg Tremelling, Brett, Fatty Matty, David Chung, Jim Smith and the best studio crew in the world are still there keeping things running light without overbyte. Please keep watching.

For the second time in as many weeks I find myself saying goodbye. My spirits were buoyed with the hundreds of wonderful messages I got last week. It’s so gratifying to know that the work we’ve done has made such a big difference in so many people’s lives. With apologies to Lou Gehrig, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I won’t be on TV for a little while. But I do hope we’ll see each other again on the small screen some day. Until then, thanks for an incredible 10 years. I’ll miss you.

  1. Tech TV is available through my digital subscriber in my city since Monday. When I found out, I said: YES! When I started watching The Screen Savers and Call for Help, two shows I’ve heard about and seen bits here and there, I said: Where’s Leo? Now that I know what happened, I have only one thing to say:
all shows and no Leo makes Tech TV a dull channel. 🙂

  2. 1000 comments! You must feel loved. Pat, Kevin, Cat, et. al. are doing a great job, but it’s not quite the same without you. I hope you can come back after the changeover is complete. Take good care.
    Danny

  3. Leo, As one of the pioneers of making technology friendly to a somewhat unaccepting world, you have truly given myself and others a better understanding of not just the specifics you covered, but the big picture of the world of tech. Through your endless warmth and compassion you have touched millions, dont give up.

  4. Sometimes it seems that the Corporate world revolves around “little men with big jobs”, in this case it sounds just right. To hold the stock hostage seems so trivial, and so trite, what can they be thinking. A long time a go I learned, the hard way, that those that own the Company can make any rules they want, it does not mean they make sense or are even rational, but they are their rules. Those people and their Company are usually short lived, as I also found out. Moving on to new things is a move up and away. The new owners should recognize this and work out a way to get an integral piece of TechTV back on the air. If it were hardware they would have it on and working by now, so what’s the problem. Comcast and Co. get on it. On a personal side I hate to see you (Leo) go from the TechTV scene, you were the shinning example of someone with a little gray in the hair that connected with everyone. I too have some gray in the hair, and that makes me a little sad to see The Mayor moving off the big screen. Not that the younger generation does not have the TechTV thing going, it is just natural to see the younger “kids” doing their thing. Some of us have been here since the beginning, and have watched the struggle for personal computer legitimacy. You are one of the leaders of this movement and we need you to stay on the scene and keep things on balance. In your April 2nd comments you say “the best studio crew in the world are still there keeping things running light without overbyte” I heartily agree that this is the case. Another part of this touched me from the past is the “running lite with out overbyte”, and took me back to a day that I picked up my first copy of Dr. Dobbs little Vol 1 No. 1 that was 8 or 10 pages copied and stapled, one of the first publications for the new PC world. Who then would have ever thought what lay ahead, it has been a great ride and more fun than anyone should have, but there is much more to come. What we all dreamed about doing if we only had more ram and just some more cpu speed , how we could change the world. That day arrived sometime ago, but with each new generation they will expect more. My oldest son has not known as day since he was born that the internet did not exist. It is this wisdom of knowing that we lose if you don’t stay in there for the new generations now and to come, the links to the start, the beginning and the knowledge and history that goes with it , are the pieces that will be missed and lost. So here’s to you getting back to the people. Live well and prosper…

  5. You will be sorely missed. It was your shows that got me interested in computers and technology. Your expertise and enthusiasm made me want to learn more, and now I plan on majoring in Computer Science. I was watching way back when you started as ZDTV (I was still in grade school) and my friends poked fun at me for it, but now they all watch it too. Thank you for so many great years on TechTV. I won’t whine, I won’t moan, I won’t yelp. I’ll just listen to you on internet radio. Religiously.

  6. I turn my TV today to watch my tivo’s Tech TV episode. I watch the first one and no Leo, watch the second one and no Leo. Stopped searched to web to see if something was going on and sure enough I come across your problems. This is unbelievable, how can they be so moronic to hold your job over your head like this? Do they realize that you make the show? Let me be frank, everyone on the show does their part but you and Patrick are a winning combo.
So sad to see you leave Leo and hope to see you soon, I am so outraged that I removed THESCREENSAVERS from my tivc list and refuse to watch it until you come back!
    Regards,
    Ferdinand

  7. The screensavers and CFH are not the same without you. Kevin is Ok but I have been watching for 5 years (ZDTV) and have come to respect your work. Fight back, do what you have to do to get back on. TTV should keep Kevin but you and Pat are the men.

  8. Leo, I have been watching you for about 5 years (ZDTV) and although Kevin does a good job it is not the same without you. You need to come back to TSS/CFH ASAP. They can keep Kevin but you and Pat are the best. Do what you need to do to come back better and stronger!

  9. “ZDTV to TECHTV…without KING LEO…nothing is REAL” !!… Talk about being way out in cyberspace, I am a week behind on my Tivo recordings and here I thought Leo was just on vacation and did not realize he got the boot until I went to Leoville.com and read the scoop….. He was (and still is) the most sincere person who never got tired of the same simple questions, and could easily handle the tuff ones with grace, style, and humor not seen on TV anymore….. He is the only person (other than the late, great Mister Rogers), who thoroughly enjoyed his job!! You just can’t find that on TV anymore…. and who is ever going to wear shoes like that on TV !!! PLEASE GET HIM BACK ON THE TUBE !!!…….. I plan to try and watch TechTV but it will be with a empty hole feeling… I do enjoy listening to Kevin because he is kind of wild and radical, but without Leo it will never be the same……Leo, no matter who you were paired with on CFH or TSS, you brought the balance to the unbalanced. You made every show come alive… you are “THE COMPLETE ONE” !.. All of us will eagerly await your return no matter what show you end up being on….

  10. Leo, your the only guy on tech tv that can comprehensivly answer a callers question. You ask the right questions and you give the right answers. Vulcan Ventures can go to lop.com for all i care. (dont go there…) G4 would be stupid not to get you back. The new guy on Call For Help is……….he’s like a Mac commercial…lots of hand movements and funny answers to straight forward questions. Enjoy your vacation because when G4 owns tech tv we’re gonna hound like hell for them to hire you back. Network just is not the same without you.

  11. Good Lord… I dearly hope G4 hires you. TSS and CFH aren’t the same without you Leo (and what are they going to do with the Call For Help-a-Thon this Christmas!) Rally the TSS and CFH crews, lay seige to the studio, and force them to return your job (and your stock!) Hrm… Ok, that might be a bit extreme. Either way, the world is going to miss you.

  12. Leo, I’m a 64 year old female, retired journalist, computer/Leo groupie and I loved seeing you both Screen Savers and Call for Help. They won’t be the same without you. Already they’re not … they lack the verve and common touch. I’ve been a fan since Computer Chronicle days. Hope you reappear shortly … Mary

  13. Sorry and disappointed to see you go. You were the link between the young and old the educated and well, me. You added value by asking the questions that I would have thought long and hard to come back in 15 minutes to ask. Not to take away from the show, I do like all the individuals and their part, but the show is missing what made it real for me. You had a great affect on the chemistry that made the Screensavers what it was, a great show. I did not appreciate the shows where you were missing as much and preffered the shows you were in attendance. You kept the show relevent, you kept the show at an understandable level, you made the show what it was, excellent.
BUT…I live in LA, listen to KFI, and well feel lucky to have not lost you all toghether.
Thanks for the years, the dedication and living up to such high standards.
    Long time viewer,
    Frank

  15. Leo, I dont know what to say. I have watched Tech TV aka ZDTV for the last 6 years and you make that channel GREAT! I cant believe they let you walk out the door. They are sorry now I am sure! Hang in there, I am sure there will be something that will be as good for you soon!
Thanks for all the goodtimes and your help!
    Dan 🙁

  16. Leo, I’ve watched ZDTV then TechTV since it launched on C-Band satellite, you are great host, you inspired me to persue a college degree in Computer Information Systems, I am now the Director of Technology for a local school system. I appreciate everything you’ve done for your veiwing public. You will be greatly missed.
Best of luck in your future endeavors.

  19. All I can say is BUCK-UP little fellow. They can’t keep a good man down. Many people feel as I do that when it comes to technology television, information is important but no mater how good it is it must also be entertaining. Few people want to spend their free time watching uninteresting anything. Comcast or whoever continues this huge market must come to grips with this concept. In this framework, you are right up there with the really heavy hitters like the Jay Lenos and David Lettermens of the world. I will lose a lot of respect for the good folks at Comcast if they fail to realize this in short order. I was a Comcast customer here in Michigan before ZDTV was on our cable network. At that time they paraded a bunch of new cable network shows on an experimental channel and asked customers to vote for which one we would like to see added to the lineup. I was among the majority who were glad that you guys won so I could continue to watch and enjoy your take on technology. I am still a Comcast customer, so I still have a vote, although it is only a small one. I wonder where I can put that satellite dish on my roof? O-well, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. Until then, I hope to see your entertaining face back on my TV where it belongs.

  20. Leo,
The ease in how you pleasantly educated, entertained, and excited viewers about various forms of technology will not be soon forgotten. Your influence has been passed on by those you have touched via all the various types of media of which you have been involved with including: tv, radio, articles and books. Count me along with your other fans/supporters that look forward to your return to tv real soon. Until then, be well. There’s a lot more promising opportunities ahead for you.
    Most sincerely,
    cristo309

  21. Well, I think that the managment have NO clue what they are doing. I fully accept your choice. Thats a load of bs man. There is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to keep what you have had for so long. SO! I think if they have taken anything away from you outside of their contract you need to seek legal advice.
I fully support you man, me and Quickill at http://www.amvslash.com
If you ever need anything from idea’s, to help, to just testing a link for you, contact either one of us and let us know.
    WE’RE HERE FOR YOU MAN

  25. There are thousands of Geeks & thousands upon thousands of people out there that have the ability to do what has been done on the screenavers over the past. Leo you were the leader!!!!!!! This is still a free country.”LEOVILLE REPORTS” has a nice sound to it. Get off your duff and start new.

  26. I’ve watched TechTV since the ZDTV days. I’ve learned a lot with Leo. After being on vacation, I’ve come back to this news. Well, so much for that channel.
Gee, Leo, I’m really going to miss you!

  27. Leo, you will be missed on TechTv. I hope Comcast lets you come back, and IMHO you can tell Vulcan to go shove it. He will be surprised to see the amount of supporters you have. TechTv will not be the same without you. TSS will carry on, same with CFH, but there will always be a large void left where you were.

  28. TSS suffers now greatly. I like those other people just fine but none have the presence of Leo.
Now, Call for Help? Insane. I suppose I’ll check it out but,INHO, Call for Help is Leo’s show and can’t be done by anyone else. Watching Pat host a show is painful. Sarah is hard to listen to. Kevin does ok, he has a bit of that presence.
Leo will land on his feet. The public loves him and at least one of those people who run things has to know that.

  29. Leo Leo Leo what did they do to My Pal Leo . I just can not understand what they are thinking at tech tv.I have learnd so much from this man .How the hell can they do this to him and us ? I know that we will see him soon.Leo we love you and we are all waiting for your next show. Come on Pal show them what your made of. Chuck from Boston Ma

  30. Oh, wow! 🙁 What a crock. 10 years of exemplary service and THAT is how they repay you for your dedication? Grrrr…
If the new company knows what’s best for them, they’ll hire you.
    Godspeed, Leo!

  31. Leo,
I’ve been a fan since the beginning. I remember how saddened I was when Kate left….now TSS has finally been stripped of it’s very soul.
And this over such a petty issue….I guess Paul Allen doesn’t have ENOUGH MONEY, so he has to have his goons sack you over a handfull of stock options. I guess it always comes down to money for some…
Of course, conspiracy theorists will say it was your unflagging willingness to be honest about Microsoft’s failings, and to offer up alternatives like Linux and OS X that got you fired.
Personally, I think it’s one more example of just how much class Gates/Allen/Balmer et.al. really have….
Keep fighting the good fight, and let’s hope we see you on the air again soon.

  32. Well what can I say, I have only been granted the chance to watch Techtv just two years ago. Yet in that time you and Pat have changed everything, even the way I think about technology. From an ex luddite “Thank you for showing me the way of the penguin!” Johnathan, “CopperAxe”.

  33. Leooooo, you will be missed. TSS was one of the few TV shows I watched regularly and now since the change its not the same. The magic is gone! Its master of ceremonies has left the big top, but I hope some way you will be able to return to the show.

  34. Leo – U Rock
Going to miss ya on TSS. Just another case of ‘the man’ trying to keep ya down…lol…Fight on my brother…lol…Hope to see you again soon!

  35. Leo I have been a fateful viewer for 5 or 6 years. You have helped me through many personal confuser headaches. You made me the techno lover I am. Even though I like the Call For Help And Screen Savers crew its not gonna be the same without you. You made us fell like we wern’t stupid and you seamed like you cared, you will be missed very much and we hope to see you again! If there is anything that your fans can do to help the situation and get you back where you belong then let us know.YOU WILL BE MISSED!!!!

  36. Leo, I am a 63 year old geek that you mentored and grew into a full fledged computer expert. Starting with ZDTV from the very biginning to even the last re-run I just saw, you have continued to teach me. You made me understand the tech world like no one could. I even built my own power computer and do all the maintenance on it myself. You always said if you just watch your shows for a month we would become experts. You were so right. But, every show you do teaches us even more on a daily basis. I’m so sorry you had to leave the best thing on TV today. Hope all will work into gold for you. Keep the faith.
    Bob

  37. Isn’t it ironic how people are put together? I mean, Tech T.V. was the program that geeks watched and the only time I saw it was when Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush was on. So I said what a cool show. I then find out the head geek: Leo is on TTV, on KFI and a Mac user too! But when I got the story regarding Leo and his former company, I too was bummed. Leo is smart and TTV dumping him was stupid. Well, with Leo’s talent and voice for radio and television, KFI would be a fool to let him go. You truly are a God of geekdom Leo. Finally, I am sorry about the wig/toupee comment, it wasn’t nice of me to goof on you like that on the air. But I just wanted to say God bless you your family and the Leoville family too. You are truly talented and will do well.
    P.S., BTW. nice hair plugs

  38. Dear Leo, I am in SHOCK!! You will be missed. Thanks for all the tips and jocularity. If not for you I would have probally gave up when i first started fooling around with computers. You got me interested & I took a course &I am now A+ certified. You changed me from a Biker to a geek! As with all crafts you never learn it all so we will always need people like you.Keep up the good work my friend and may God bless you and your family.
    Rino

  39. I can’t grasp it Leo, dude you are the coolest dude i ahve ever seen on tv and one of the reasons i watch the screen savers and call for hezze. Dude you rock and the shows will never never never ever be the same or as fun again.

  40. Your the reason I started to watch tech tv it was (ZDTV at the time) your one of the people who got me so involved into technoligy… im sorry to hear that you had to leave… i’ll miss you!

  41. Sorry to hear you left Mr. Leo. I found you by mistake about three years ago. When you left CFH and did just TSS, I followed you. Now your gone period. In the past three years I’ve learned so much about computers, its just not fair. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. In those three odd some years, I sent you about a dozen emails and faxes, with no reply. Well………..alls well that ends well……………GOOD LUCK LEO!!! 🙂

  42. We’ll all going to miss you leo. You’ve in some way have touched all our hearts and minds. We’ll miss you leo… all of us here at the home made computer club.

  43. Holy deuce…. I noticed your absence, but never heard any news on the subject. After coming here, my worst fears were realised. I’ll miss seeing you on my TV. Stay busy, and good luck.

  44. It’s been a blast. Thanks for the memories.
Enjoyed watching you, and related well with your style.
All the best in whatever you do next.
Stop to smell the flowers now and then.

  45. Leo I have really enjoyed your shows. I will miss you and your knowledge, and I wish that it could have turned out differently. The ratings will drop without you there.I would have quit too if they tried to pull your stock options, that you recieved from working with an agreement all those years. I would have quit on the principal alone. Screw them and look for a contract with Disney, and get a real exciting computer show that will be high budjet, and high on specialist and contacts. Don’t waste your time with those that do not appreiate your talents and humour.Good luck and look forward to your new show, when it happens, I hope soon.

  46. Just a note to tell you that we will miss you a lot, you are the heart of the Screen Savers (Pat is the hammer). From Puerto Rico, thanks for all and see you later.

  47. Leo,
I will miss watching the “dynamic duo” (you and Patrick) on TSS. I’ve been a computer geek since I was 8yrs. old. At which time, I earned my very first certification in the computer industry. The coveted “Radio Shack TRS-DOS” certification! I still have it to this day in the original frame.
Anyhow, you will be missed. Many of my co-workers like watching TechTV as I do. I’m still an avid fan and probably will be for a long time. I wish you all the best. Thank you for the laughter, levity, and the down to earth approach that you give “non-technical” viewers!
You are one of a kind!
    Sincerly,
    Chris Steele

  48. I go away for a few weeks and look what happens. They rip out the very heart of the two shows that I watch almost every evening. I hope that Comcast has enough forsight to know a proven winner when they see him.
Over the past years as my grandchildren where becoming enjoyable I introduced them to both shows and spent the evening watching, learning but most of all laughing together at you antics, the interplay with the co-host especially Patrick and with the callers. Remeber we always laughed with you.
AS a Network and MS Exchange Admin. I have a great admiration for the job you have done and will continue to do. The manner in which you present material that at times is extremly dull & boring. Please pop up somewhere on the tube again.
So for now can Patrick just go use his sledge hammer on those guys.
    Your friend from afar.
    Jay

  49. Leo,
Best of luck! Hope that the “new” company finds a way to get you back on the air… I’ve watched you since the days of ZDTV and you were on the network for like half the day!
While I will still watch some shows – Call For Help and TSS really won’t be the same without you there. I will miss you on the TechTV – you brought a lot to that network the “suits” probably didn’t realize until now that you’re gone.
Oh and hope easter was happy 🙂
    -Todd
