Tuesday’s Tiggywinkle

All the news that's fit to rant aboutStand by for tech news…
Eat your niblets, Clarence Birdseye was born on this day in 1886. Admiral Grace Hopper was born in 1906. Malkovich is 50. It’s Worf’s birthday, too. He’ll be born in 2340.

Doug Englebart demonstrated the first mouse at SRI on this day in 1968.

  1. The House has passed the CAN-SPAM Act. President Bush is expected to sign it into law before the end of the year.
  2. Even ATMs are vulnerable to worms… if they’re running Windows. According to SecurityFocus.com, ATMs from two banks were hit by the Nachi worm in August and we’re just learning about it now. The question is, why the hell are they running Windows?
  3. Coca-Cola is launching its own music download service next year. Who’s next? Midas Muffler?
  4. The new version of AdSubtract, a popular web ad blocking program, will block paid search results, as well.
  5. Steve Jobs tells Rolling Stone, “we don’t believe it’s possible to protect digital content” and there’s “this amazingly efficient distribution system for stolen property, called the Internet — and no one’s gonna shut down the Internet.” So how’d he talk the music industry into supporting the iTunes Music Store? “We don’t see how you convince people to stop being thieves unless you can offer them a carrot — not just a stick. And the carrot is: We’re gonna offer you a better experience . . . and it’s only gonna cost you a dollar a song.” Interesting interview. The first he’s done in a long time.
  6. That buck a song may be history soon. Consumers would like it to be lower, but music industry execs speaking at Monday’s iHollywood Forum’s Music 2.0 conference said they couldn’t afford to go lower, despite the fact that surveys show consumers would buy more at 79 cents a song.

  1. LEo that was funny about Midas Muffler!
NO Sue say it an’t so. I have both g4 and techtv and its 2 of the few channels I watch.
Sounds like there going to F… UP zdtv(techtv) more :<

    PS Merry X-mas all

  2. I like the part about TechTV veiwership nearly doubling recently. I dont see how someone can say there going to F-Up the channel even more. I think the channel is great!!! I havent been there since the early days but I have been a TechTV fan for over 3 years now and I think I can count on one hand the number of Screensavers shows I have missed in that time. The new inventors showw is excellent. And Morgan and Adam seem to have a very strong following with X-Play.
Also how can the music industry say they can’t afford .79 cents a song. I think they can’t afford not to if they want to win the war. I guess they still dont realize how good things could be for them. They need to take a look at things like VHS. Things that seem to be bad at first may just be a goldmine larger than you ever could imagine in disguise.

  3. ATMs typically ran on OS/2 for years, but now that IBM is dropping support I guess they’re skeert to use Linux…

  4. Well Wesley Hetrick you missed out. In the old days they had way more tech than they do now.
About the only sex they had was leos jokes(jk) and a bit on internet tonight.
Now they have 2 shows all about it on a tech channel. Does playboy tv have girls on it showing you how to format hard drives?
    ZDtv was great.

  5. Holy cow, all these upcoming music services are going a little far, I can see it now…ordering my BigMac and the clerk saying “Would you like any downloads with that?”
Steve Jobs is a genious, he and his company understand what we consumers want…sure im writing this on a PC and using windows, but I sure do WANT a Mac. They truly innovate and do things much better than several other companies.
Sure I would buy even more if song prices were lower, yet Im very happy with the .99 cent price tag, I feel if there are 4-6 good songs most times its worth the 9.99 for the whole album.

  7. I get TechTV via satellite dish (Dish Network). Does this mean that, if Comcast acquires the channel, it will only air on Comcast? I sure would hate to lose “Call For Help” and “The Screen Savers.”

  8. Thanks Sue. Gheez Louise…Pray for our best loved & watched shows every single day..CFH & TSS!
I don’t mind paying the 99 cents a song. Problem is, it is very hard to find the Music we like. MP3.com was perfect for finding “our” kind of Instrumental music.

  9. Why can’t music CD’s be cheaper or music downloads in general? 20 dollars to have 2 good songs, man we are getting ripped off. Techtv rules..only I don’t get that channel with the cable I have…they need to have like online realtime feeds of the shows!
