Wednesday’s Ramblings

All the news that's fit to rant aboutToday’s top tech stories:

  1. The numbers are in and the Athlon 64 is a clear winner according to PC World. The Athlon 64 trounced the Pentium 4 in nearly all tests except ripping in MusicMatch. It also beat the Apple G5 in all areas except Photoshop.

  2. The RIAA may have snagged another innocent victim. He says it’s not my IP address, man and I don’t even like Latin music. QED. The EFF is representing him.
  3. The Microprocessor Forum is on in San Jose. Transmeta unveiled its Efficeon, saying it has solved the transistor leakage problem. Nvidia announces the nForce 3 Go120 Media and Communications Processor designed for Efficeon notebooks. Sub-notebooks with the two should ship next year.
  4. Intel’s Q3 earnings are up 142%, the best Q3 growth since 1996. Could it be the slump is over?
  5. Dell announces two new Axim PDAs adding Wi-Fi and a low-priced model.
  6. Mozilla 1.5 is final, and there are new versions of Thunderbird and Firebird, too.

  1. The Mozilla website must be swamped right now, because I can’t download anything from their ftp server. Looking forward to Firebird 0.7 and Mozilla 1.5

  2. Leo I’m so disappointed. You didn’t make a single political reference to get bashed about. What’s the matter, getting tired of the emails? That’s ok, I’m sure the Intel fans will have something to say about the Athlon 64. 😉

  3. So the new Moz is out.. ANy clue when a new version of Camino is coming out (The standalone Mac webrowser)? I have been using 0.7 which is a pretty good version (a hell of alot better than Safari).
Anyway.. About the guy in the RIAA story.. He says that he’s not going to buy CDs anymore… I have a thought.. Why not support your LOCAL musicians??? Most of them are not on lables and if they are, 99% of time time, they’re local lables who’re not part of the RIAA. You’re local guys can be just as good, if not better than the “big guys” and hey, if they ever “make it”, you can say “Ha! I’ve been listening to him/her/them since they were playing in the small bar in ___(insert town here)___”. And, if you do decide to go to radio, good luck, ’cause Cheap Channel is going to feed you the same 12 songs, over and over and over and over… Check out the NCE stations (you know the 88.1-91.9 portion of the FM band..) There should be at least 1 good college station down there. (Milwaukee has 91.7 WMSE, Chicago 90.9 WLUW & 89.1 WONC) Or, try out web radio. You could listen to my college’s station on there (I’m on Wednesday nights (except tonight because of break) from 11p – 2a central time). It’s at But that’s just 1 of 1000000000000000000 stations out there. Seriously, if there’s something you like, someone on the ‘net is playing it.
