Heart’s DeZire

Tomorrow on The Screen Savers I’m going to do my weekly Leo’s Pick. This week I’ll demo the new Palm Zire 71. It’s the nicest Palm yet with a 320×320 16-bit transflective screen, 144 mhz ARM processor, 16 MB of RAM, an SD expansion slot, and a VGA camera and all for just $299.
The camera isn’t the best, but it’s good enough for quick shots. Here are some I took on the set today for the demo tomorrow.

Kevin pretends to be busy
Kristina DeNike (Roman’s wife) with their new baby
Patrick, Fu, Yoshi, and I gather to review questions
Yoshi says this shirt makes him look fat. No way!
Prager pretending to be busy
Sarah strikes a pose
Patrick wields a mean Sawzall
The beast with three backs

It just goes to show you that the picture is more important than the quality of the camera.

  1. Reminds me of the stuff I used to get with My Handspring Handcam Cartridge… Good enough for some things…

  2. The picture of Pat, Kevin and Sarah makes me smile. Reminds me of all the good times I have with my friends.

  3. I’ve always enjoyed the “behind the scenes” pics. It’s nice to see what goes on and how the crew interacts while the camera’s not rolling.

  4. Trey, Your digital camera must be really crappy if it can’t even beat 640×480 (VGA) size pictures. I think a quick doodle may be better than your camera. 🙂

  5. Hi Leo! Im from Indonesia and just want to say you rules!! I watch The ScreenSavers and Call_for_help everyday on cable here in Jakarta and I just love your reviews and helpful hints. Pls send my regards to all the crews and hope you enjoy making your show as much as i enjoy watching.

  6. But Leo’s pick just looks and feels soooo nice. Then again that was the first palm I’ve ever touched and I didn’t know what to do. Now I have to buy one! Great show yesterday Leo, it’s was great being in the audience!

  7. Hey Leo, I went out and purchased the Palm Zire 71 immediately after you reviewed it on the show today. I wanted to get it before, but was waiting for you to give a review on it. Thanks, love TSS and Call for Help

  8. i had a fuji finepix for a whole two months before it keeled over and died… it’s been mia in the repair shop for two or three months now and that’s after i refused their plans to fix it…
i’m not sure i’m gonna be sold on this digital photography stuff until i can treat a digital camera just like i do my mannual: when it’s as old as i am and i can puke all over it in a fit of car sickness and the thing still takes darn nifty pics. …can a zire handle that sort of loving treatment?

  9. If you like the PocketPC, Verizon just released the Samsung i700; it’s a camera phone (same res as the Zire), has a unlimited built in high-speed internet (60-144kbs) anywhere in Verizon’s digital coverage (for $45 bucks a month,), and syncs my Outlook mail, contacts, calendar, AvantGo channels through a VPN to my home computer every half hour. And if Microsoft ever releases MS Portrait video conferencing software that supports the i700, you can have free application for mobile picture/video conferencing 🙂

  10. I had own a palm 100 since they came out and I was holding out to purchase a pocket pc (something more like Dell’s)when the pricing came down, but since the Zire and Tungsten arrived from Palm I might have to re-think.
P.S. Why were you not satisfied with you Pocket PC?

  13. Wow!!! Roman has such an UGLY Baby! Man and I thought the Seinfeld episode about ugly babies was just a myth!

  14. I am still confused about which is the right one for me. PDa that is. I need to be able to use Excel spread sheet with macro features on a PDa. Who has experience with this and can you tell me what works best?
    Cheers

  15. Leo!!!
You should have got the Tungsten C!!!!!
Same OS at the Zire71, 64mb RAM, 400MhZ CPU, AND WiFi!!!!

  16. I have been wanting a portable mp3 player, digital camera and a Palm. When I saw the 71 after you whipped it out last week for a second I was intrigued. Next day it was mine. I also like the book download option. Looked for your almanac but didn’t see it yet….

  17. Yeah Leo..Zire 71?..I just got it!..All my friends at work love it. The pics are good for the web. Bright screen too, plus slide show.. so far, I love it..and your show too.

  18. Nice try Ash, no matter how many times you post your message, Palm handheld is still faster than your iPaq (yes, latest iPaq). Don’t believe me, go update yourself with some latest handheld news… I am sorry for you.

  19. Yup, you could buy a Dell. And use MS operating system. So watch your 400Mhz processor turn into a 133Mhz, your 48M Rom strain with the bloated operating system and you’ll certainly need that standard SD slot to fit the biggest card you can find to store all those lean and mean PPC apps. But don’t worry, you get the 4 or 5 reboots every day for free!

  20. 2 bad they cant make a ipaq with a built in camera. oh well still great pictures on a palm. Have a good time even if your a total stranger

  21. OK, you just have confirmed my believe that working at TechTV is one of the coolest jobs in the world. You lucky, man. 🙂

  22. kickass picks and although i’m 3500miles from being close to the studio i do plan to come down to cali sometime.. oh and i’m going to keep tabs on whether a new mac book is realeased next week..

  23. Or for the same price you could get a Dell PocketPC with 400mhz processor, 64 meg RAM, 48 meg ROM, SD & CompactFlash expansion, and a backlit screen but no low-quality camera.

  24. Roman and Kristina. You have a very cute baby. Disregard Spyders comment. One thing I can’t stand is comments from small-minded people whose only purpose is to hurt others.

  25. I wish I was smart like Patrick and you. I love both you guys. I also, watch Call For Help. Both shows are great!
Keep up the good work U 2. 🙂
    Love that PDA! 🙂

  26. Palm hmmm nope sorry will have to stay with my iPaq 🙂 great show keep up the great tips and gadgets and I’ll keep watching.
Need more gadget corner stuff. You know best gadge of the week or day and or dodgyest gadge of the week or day that would be fun 🙂
