They’ve Created A Monster!

They Might Be Giants are in studio right now doing their sound check for tonight’s show. They just performed an hilarious accordion rendition of Edgar Winter’s Frankenstein. I only caught the end of it on my iBook, but I can’t resist posting it in contravention of all US trade and copyright conventions. Enjoy.Dial-A-Song

  1. Oh great stuff leo my friend, any little TMBG file I can get is great, and this is… great…. too much great.

  2. I’m really trying to enjoy TMBG…I admit I haven’t listened to them as much as I could. I’m glad to see a geeky band using lots of tech to perform, and with such a great attitude towards the internet. However 3 songs – approaching 1/4 of the actual airtime of the show – has to be a little much.

  3. I’m not a huge TMBG fan, but ROFL at “Frankenstein” rendered on the accordion! Metal meets Myron – far out, man.

  4. I was so sad to see The Screen Savers tonight, because today’s episode sums up how awful the channel is becoming. I find They Might be Giants migraine-inducing. Although I like Margaret Cho, The Screen Savers isn’t the place for her. If anyone even remembers: The Screen Savers used to be a fun, geeky show about tech.

  5. Ya know Joseph, I thought the same thing up until farely recently, then I realized something. The show is still great, the people are the same people, and instead of focusing on whatever you may think is bad, try and have fun with the show, look for all the good stuff still in it. I agree that IMHO TSS could be a better show if it went back to more information, more cool geek stuff, but still, the show is moving forward and if you don’t like it you will be left behind. So with that, I love TSS for what it is, not for what it was or will be. Thanks for the clip Leo, it’s great that you got it, and really nice of you to post it on here.

  6. TSS has musical guests on so infrequently (let alone a group as cool as the Giants), if they want to use up 1/4 or a 1/3 or whatever percentage of air time to play some good tunes, I say more power to them. Heck, TSS is on 5 days a week… 1/4 of one episode isn’t all that much, considering, and I’m sure there are many out there who wish it had been more. As far as the folks who think TTV is going downhill, well… they’re certainly changing things, and some people respond to change better or worse than others. Me, I’ll keep on watching as long as I’m entertained, and when I’m not, I’ll just switch the channel and watch something else.

  7. Where are you all at 11:00pm San Francisco Time!!
I work 4-8pm so 11 was the only time I could watch TSS!!!! Leo, I’ve been listening to your wonderful voice for years (radio w/ Dvorak???)
As much as I remember the Thunderbirds, et al, I still NEED my TSS!!!!
    Help Me….

  8. grr. i’m having not a bad hair day, but a bad tech day. but anyway! i rented “no” from the library the other day and it gave me many hours of entertainment. i think, however, i’ll always associate “the plucky duck show” with tmbg. 😀

  9. Love it! I saw these guys at a free KROQ concert at a very small amphitheater in the Hollywood hills back in the 80’s- great, fun show. Glad to see them still alive and kicking.
I agree with Soldaze, what happened to the daily rebroadcast?!? I’m still in SoCal, where TSS airs at 4pm, and I work 8-5 (so I missed the episode!). I NEED my TSS!

  10. The show is great. YOu should have more bands… like once a week. But TMBG sucks. I give every band a fair chance. Im a muscian myself and have 1 CD out. Ill give it to them that they are original but I just cant get into them.
    Can I play on TSS?

  11. I don’t see how anyone (specifically Joseph) can have a problem with They Might Be Giants being on TSS. They’re the perfect band for the show given how tech-oriented they are and how much they embrace a sort of ‘open source’ mindset.
You may find them migrane-inducing (to each his own, right – though I’m curious to know what you don’t find ‘migrane-inducing’) – but they only performed three or four short songs – and there was a heavy emphasis on their various forays into the world of tech. Not only do they employ (and have employed throughout their two decades in the biz) all sorts of cool gadgets in their performances – they really do have a passion for all things tech (they’re so cool – they even recorded a song on wax cylinder at the Edison Laboratories).
Their websites (and heavy use of them) have set a gold standard for the entertainment industry, and they’re blazing a trail with the idea of meeting fans needs through the digital media.
Someone can correct me on this if I’m wrong, but they were also one of the first bands to post an entirely MP3 album (Long Tall Summer) – which was a fantastic stride down the road of embracing technology and not fighting a losing battle with it like the RIAA.

  12. PS – TMBG does not in any way “suck”. As someone who has seen them live twice and who owns virtually all of their work, I hope I would know. Such a criticism could only be leveled by someone with no understanding of, or appreciation for music whatsoever.
Even if you don’t find their sound or style palatable – their well-crafted lyrics, skilled musicianship and pure exuberance for creating music are undeniable. On top of that – they’re still humble after 2 decades of success and appreciate their fans.
They are truly master artisans who have perfected a truly unique craft – and their ability to transcend any genre classification is nothing short of miraculous.

  13. I enjoyed the “Giants” being on TSS yesterday, it was a nice change of pace. The people above me complaining, most likely are ones who don’t look for much variety in their lives. It’s NOT as if TSS is trying to become or compete with MTV!
    LOL

  16. I’m not a big fan of TMBG, but I went to one of their concerts in the early 90’s. They played at the Flynn Theatre in Burlington, Vermont and closed the show with the song Frankenstein! At the time, they said the song was “Dedicated to Their Roadies”. It was an AWESOME rendition, quite a bit “harder” and more true to the original than the mp3 I found here on the blog. It made a huge impression on me. I’m still not a huge fan of their music, but I have a great deal of respect for them.
    Sean.
