Déja Vu All Over Again

Call for HelpIt’s been just over two years since I stopped hosting Call for Help (you can read my original email about leaving in The Laporte Report from March 15, 2001). A number of people hosted the show after I left, including my good friend Chris Pirillo. But I have to admit, I could never watch the show without a little twinge of longing. I missed doing it more than I ever would have thought.
Well I’m very pleased to report that I’m coming back. Chris is moving to greener pastures (I’m sure he’ll have more to say about it on his blog) and TechTV has invited me to return as host of Call for Help starting tomorrow. We’ll miss Chris a lot. He added a bunch of much needed tech savvy to the channel. And I valued him as a colleague and a friend.

I’ll be returning CFH to its roots as a call-in help show as quickly as possible, taking as many of your calls as we can fit into an hour each day. I know the time slot isn’t ideal for many of you (3p Eastern/Noon Pacific) but there will be beefed-up weekend repeats. And if the show goes well (that is, if you and all your friends watch it religiously) it will prove what I’ve contended all along: people want to watch computer help on TV. And maybe then we can move it to a more convenient hour.

Naturally, I will continue to co-host The Screen Savers with Patrick, and Cat has agreed to continue on as co-host on Call for Help. Please tune-in and call-in Call for Help, weekdays at 3p Eastern on TechTV. (Now if we can only find the old show open.)

  1. If it IS a joke, I bet Chris won’t be so happy when he reads all these people so glad Leo is replacing him 🙁 You Rock Chris!!!

  2. OUTSTANDING!!! I never thought this would have ever happened. This is the excuse to start watching TechTV again.

  3. I’m going to miss Chris. But it seems a little fishy how this is playing out. Especially after reading the blog’s of the people who would really know what’s going on.

  4. Leo,
Congrats on being back on CFH!!! I always liked when you filled in for Chris (I didn’t have TechTV when you hosted the show). I hate it that Chris is leaving.

  5. Yeeehaaaa! Can’t wait to see Leo back in the CFH saddle where he belongs.
    Thank goodness for TIVO! 🙂

  6. Haha! Good April Fools joke… Wait LEO! It’s April 2nd that means…

    Oh boy…
    WELCOME BACK Léo!

  7. Let’s take a moment to review the facts…
-Chirs leaves Call For Help & Leo returns
-April 1st has come and gone
-Dogs & cats are lying together in harmony
The Apocalypse is officially upon us. Officially.

  8. Hey Leo, that is the best news I’ve heard since you left Call For Help. As you might know, I run The Leo Laporte Fansite and actually asked a question on your last official CFH show back in March of 01. You really helped me getting into computers back then and before that, and I’m glad to see such an excellent person with immense tech knowledge helping people with their tech problems and maybe starting them into the Tech World.
I’m very glad to hear this, as I said before, but this is just wonderful to hear.

  9. YES! YES! YES!
Leo, that’s fantastic. I have really missed the one-on-one call-in show ever since TPTB decided to put TechTv and Screen Savers on a, “technotainment,” format – in my opinion, one of the worst moves ever made in television (second only behind moving you out of Call for Help).
This is a great day, indeed.
Please excuse me now. I must go set my VCR to tape Call for Help daily.

  10. Sometimes going back to something doesn’t always work out the way you imagined it. I do hope it’s different in your case. Don’t burn out on doing all the Tech TV stuff you have goats to take care of 🙂 Chris needed to be set free it just came a little sooner than I think anyone thought it would.

  11. Leo! Congrats! I’m happy for you and glad to have you back, but Chris is gone! It can’t be true.. I hope Chris will visit sometimes…

  12. This is the very BEST news I’ve heard in a long, long time. I’m so happy you’re coming back to Call For Help. CFH is YOU!! You ARE CFH!! No one does it better than you, Leo, and never will. I can’t tell you how much respect and admiration I have for you. You’re a true HERO!! Really. Your integrity and compassion among many other attributes makes you a hero. I have a whole host of reasons why I say that, but they’re too voluminous to post here.
Thank you for agreeing to host the show. I hope you’ll have as much fun hosting as we will watching you.

  13. Alright! You have no idea how excited I am! Call for Help was the first show I ever watched on what was ZDTV!! And I learned so much from you hosting, having you back to host it again is awesome!!!! I hope if enough of us watch CFH, Tech TV will move it to a more convenient time!!! This is awesome!!

  14. wow, leo… I just read Chris’s post and now this… You guys need to trackback to each other!

  15. Dan from Leoville :
    >TechTV firing one of their two most recognized faces is completely asinine. I’ll leave it at that.
TWO? Who else is gone? I must be slow….

  16. Hey leo I am so happy for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I think you are a great asset to techtv. I will continue waking up at 6:00 am to watch the re runs of Call For Help. You are a great host

  17. At last! A bright spot in TechTV. Maybe there’s hopt yet. Now if we can get the Tech back in the other TechTV shows.

  18. Oh no… My world has ended… Chris will no longer be with us… Can’t… Continue… *sob*

  19. Now I will actually have something besides Texas Justice to watch on my free period every other day!

  20. Hey Leo, maybe I’ll actually get to talk to you one of these days, I’ve never called in in the past, but I’ll try to think up something to call in about, LOL
Good luck on CFH… hope it’s not too much work load for you like it was last time.

  21. Wow, this is bittersweet. I’ve known Leo and Chris for years. I’m happy for Leo and sad for Chris.
Chris is a great guy, though, and will land on his feet. His newsletters at http://www.lockergnome.com should get even better now!
Personally, I hope TechTV pulls through this slump. I keep dreading the day when the entire thing collapses.

  22. Congrats, you seem really excited, that’s great! I hope you’re not stretching yourself too thin. Don’t forget about your Regis appearances! Also, Kevin is the perfect fill-in co-host and Nicole is doing a great job, hope she stays.

  23. Hi Léo!
I am so happy to read that you will be returning to host your child, “Call for Help.” Ever since you left the show, I found it very difficult to watch continually. Don’t get me wrong, I thought Chris Prillo was great, but the show lost its original flavor. You brought a warmth of sincerity and ownership that most viewers could feel. I wish you the best of success with your return.
As you probably know, I have been a devoted ZDTV/TechTV viewer from the very beginning. I am so glad that the TV concept of a computer help show has survived, especially during the down turn in the economy. I was with Sun Microsystems for over eight years when the weak economy finally hit me. Sun executed a huge reduction in force. After taking a couple months off to be with my family, I am now actively searching for that next great opportunity.
Again, best wishes with “Call for Help.” I can’t wait to watch tomorrow’s show. This better not be some kind of belated April Fool’s joke! 🙂
    Cheers,

  24. I’ve got the mp3 of your opening theme…
    But I will miss chris…
    but I won’t miss chris…
*stares at IRC and his being a gnomie*

  25. is it true? well, we miss you leo but we’ll surely miss chris pirillo who is very good in answering even the most difficult questions that we can offer.I know that Chris left for his own well being and we know that. I hope that hell be happy on whatever things he will do. Well Leo congrats again! continue your good work again and more power

  26. I’ve only been watching techtv for a year or so– TSS & CFH avidly. Chris was a very bright spot in a thin mixture of british reruns and marionettes and I will miss his humor and hyperactivity very much. From all the praise here for Leo hosting CFH I expect the show will be another “Roots” or moon landing. Don’t let me down, Leo. I hope you all throw that little Gnome a great big party.

  27. Finally Leo has come back to Call For Help!! Can u smell what Leo has cooking? Yippie, Leo is back to the rescue, revive what once was lost… Call For Help was great with Leo and good with Chris but will be better with Leo again. Hey I am not saying Chris was not good, but it never felt the same with Leo gone. I just wish I could watch TechTV but I do not get TechTV with comcast cable in FL.

  28. Looks like Tech-tv is going down, best way to do this is by changing when a program comes on, and dropping 30 minutes off TSS. Leo is a great guy in his own way, but anytime I found him hosting CFH as a fill in for Chris, the show lacked the spark that only Chris has. I simply won’t be watching anymore or encouraging anyone else here in Canada, in fact, I’ll be writing my cable station to pull the channel off the air.

  29. Personally, it seems that TechTV is grasping at straws trying to figure out how to survive. I wish Leo well, but I don’t see good things on the horizon for TechTV. On the other hand, for Leo, it means that he gets much more exposure again to a wider-range of audiences and can change prepare his career for a move back into radio, or into some other format somewhere else.
I heard from TechTV insiders that Chris was laid off, along with a few other staffers yesterday. This isn’t the first layoff, either. Morale internally at TechTV is low, my sources say, despite the happy face that Leo’s trying to put on it here.

  30. It was April 2 when you posted, not April 1. Leo, that is astounding news. I thought you were integral to signing up Chris for CFH from the start, just a hunch.
Chris was given grief when he first started, as much admired Leo’s replacement, but I think he has since found his niche on CFH. I’ll miss him as host, his enthusiasm for technology and his knowledge thereof. The Call For Help-a-thon was an amazing spectacle. Wish him well for me.
At the same time with your return, it’s like seeing an old friend in a familiar place. Welcome back.
