The End Times

Tonight’s the last night for our old set. After the show ends, we begin crating up pieces for storage. They’ll strike the set completely early next week while we tape shows in the Tech Live studio. The show will be dark tomorrow and all next week. The programs we’re taping next week will air in October while we rehearse on the new set which is supposed to be completed by then.
The new set is much more modern, lighter and airy, and will be much easier for us to work with. I’ll miss the basement, though. I have so many fond memories here, going all the way back to our first shows in May 1998. I am trying to get a hold of Kate to get her into the studio tonight to join us for the farewell. It would be nice to have a last dance with her on the old set. It’s also the end of the line for the Screen Savers Theme and the show open. We’re shooting a new open today and tomorrow.

I’m looking at the changes with some sadness. The two shows I created on ZDTV are no longer recognizably mine, for better or for worse. I guess I should feel lucky to have had four amazing years doing this. I have no idea what the next four years hold – or how big a role I’ll have in the development of these shows – but for the time being I’m here and The Screen Savers will keep doing the best Geek TV we know how, whether we’re in the basement or not. If these walls could talk…

  1. Kate? Cool. I’ll sit through the gaming stuff then if we get to see Kate one last(?) time.

  2. I’m watching right now while the last show is live. I hope Kate is able to drop by. That would be awesome. I’m sad to see the changes though. 🙁

  3. Bye basement. You were there in the good shows as well as the bad.
    long live the basment memories.

  4. Yes, if only those walls could talk….though they would probably only talk about the newest OS 🙂

  5. Long live the Screensavers and crew. I was there this past week it was great. The walls always talk.

  6. I’ve been watching TSS since 1998 and I’m sad to see the good ol’ basement gone. I think alot of us Leoville cizitens will miss the basement and the opening theme. It would have been nice to see Kate there for one last time. But the memories of the old basement will never be forgotten.

  7. I actually stumbled on your show by accident back in the beginning of 2002, and I love it. Its exactly what I expect a geek show to be about. Keep it up!

  8. I have been watching TSS since the Fall of ’98. Our cable system didn’t offer ZDTV until then. It was a show that I never missed…until recently. When the show was Leo and Kate, it was COOL! When the show changed to Leo and Pat, it was still COOL! But, alas, the times they must change. All of a sudden I tune in to The Screen Savers and find that it has been taken over by gAmErZ! AAAAAAHHHHH!!! I miss the way the show was just about fixing computer problems, the “upgrade cascade”, the “how-to’s”, all about Linux, etc. I’m sure that I speak for many folks when I say that the show really went downhill when it started catering more to gaming. I, like many others, do not use my computer for gaming. I am an Electrical Engineer, and I use work-related software. I am also into web design, and have taught myself how to use Dreamweaver, Flash, Swish, etc. I liked the show the way it used to be. I too, will miss the old basement. I will probably tune in to see how TSS 4.0 (as I call it: Leo & Kate = 1.0, Leo & Pat = 2.0, Gamerz = 3.0, NEW SET = 4.0) looks. I’m sad to say that the changes from TSS 2.0 on have made me lose interest in TSS more or less. VIVA LA BASEMENT!!!

  9. While I also miss the good ol freewheeling days of yore. I must disagree with Leos statement that neither of the shows he helped create “are no longer recognizably (his)” Call For Help is still at the root of it very much the same show with some minor changes, mostly due to a different host. Your guest hosting of it this week proved that to me, it was as if no time had passed, sure the set was different, and cat was in the corner… but at the root of it, it’s a show based in the connection between a host and the audience, with some segmenst to break it up and elaborate on certain points. I do agree that TSS doesnt resemble what it used to be at all, different vibe, different focus, but still great geek TV… heck, you talked me into building my computer and buying a Tivo, top that Regis!

  10. Oh well, here end’s another chapter, and so begins a new one. TSS so far has been pretty good in my mind, although it hasn’t covered PC problems too strongly recently, I’m not all that dissapointed. It’s grown, I’ll miss the original opening theme, but I’ve got 2 on mp3, one with you and Kate, the other is just a straight theme. It’ll be nice to see the new set, and I’m sure that many new memories will be put into ’em. Heh, I’ll never forget the Larson, Parillo show, that was once in a lifetime. TSS may have many cosmetic changes, but as long as you take live calls, and continue to help others out with their PC problems, it’ll always be the same.

  11. I really don’t see why they have to screw with the show.
All of us here would watch it daily [my wife, the kids and I]
Oh well as with most things in life, they end.
You can tell Mr. Allen for me that TechTv has lost a viewing
    household.

  12. Have been watching the show ever since I was able to tune in. Tech TV is the channel of choice at any given time of any given day. Since it has only been just over 2 years since I have been able to get tech tv, Leo and Patrick with the current set is the only think I know when it comes to the history of the show.
I look forward to seeing this new set and all the new improvements/upgrades that are in the making and being talked about.
All good things come to an end and eventually need a new fresher look. Long live this great show.

  13. instead of packing it all away, they should be auctioning items off, raise some extra dough of the network.

  14. I will miss the old set. I never really got to see TSS when it was Kate and Leo. I did get to see a couple though. I think the gray and other colors will match them better than the new set. I wish Kate could have been there though. Oh well hopefully we’ll at least be able to see re-runs of the show from the old set.

  15. I think the new set will be great.
Change can be hard to deal with, but the basement will always be in our memories(and video tapes)
I still think TSS should have a special on all the different changes and sets, and hosts. i never got to see the age old episodes, but when I first got Techv in ’99 or early 2000, I remember seeing it, adn wondering what the heck it was about. now im hooked…
I’ll always be watching, as long as its leo, pat, and Marty serving up twisted lists or sites of the night..
    -Aaron

  16. all good things must come to an end . But i think the old set was what i got used to it was a great little set. but i’m looking foreward to seeing the new set from reading the transcripts from the chat on thescreensavers.com it sound like a it will be very different.
    cant wait to see it

  17. i guess change is good. The ScreenSavers will still be the best. i have only been watching it for about a year now out here in Canada. anyone know were to find the screen savers opening theam music. if you do email me.

  18. we watch the shows no matter what
there a lot of shows now on tech tv that we dont watch
but call for help with chris
and the screensavers with the entire gang is still very good
we are not gamers so those shows we dont like as much
    we miss kate,scott etc
    stay with the show leo
    larry and mary kelly

  19. I will miss the current set- hope the “new” show is an improvement.
One thing I want to mention, though.. reading the transcript of the chat about the new set, I wondered about Hammersly’s comment about ‘topping’ the all-kilt show in response to a question about Patrick’s kilt. I don’t tkink he understands why people were e-mailing about the ‘Keep the Kilt’ petition or about Darci’s ears , for that matter. It does have to do with individuals, their unique personalities and the uniqueness of the show they are on.

  20. The show has had it’s ups and downs, but recently, more downs than ups. It really sucks seeing these changes though. The old original shows are all almost extint, except for TSS and CFH because TechLive isn’t what ZDTV News was before. Changes show how companies “intend to keep up with society”. But TechTV is perhaps just focusing on one segment of society. Where’s the Linux sections? Where’s the answering computer questions? What’s with putting interviews in the shows? Definetly TSS has gone WAAAAY downhill these few years. I know that Leo is mainly responsable for the creation of TSS and CFH, but ever since the TechTV people came up, I guess that they took over and messed it up. How about going back to roots? Has TechTV ever watched the old shows? Or are they too “old” to be watched? Heck – I recently saw an old TSS episode I had recorded when I came up (those were the times of Kate), and it was more educational than today’s show. Even the older shows can help today’s problems and are more “geek-friendly”, or actually more “user-friendly”. I think that it is time that if the TechTV people are really considering doing a new set, why not then do a new everything? I’m in this case referring to answering tough-juicy-geeky questions about stuff that TSS was originally intended to be. CFH nowadays is also a show without taste – the host is just way too geeky, and on the meanwhile TSS has become a talk show. Wasn’t CFH intended to be for the more common people and TSS for the hardcore computer users? What’s up with TechTV? GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS PEOPLE, if not a gloomier future is in hold for you!!!! (I’m not referring to Leo, I’m referring to the TechTV executives)

  21. As most long time viewers, I will likely miss the basement and all of the fond memories. But, all good things come to an end (the basement this time, not TSS). The only thing from the REALLY old TSS episodes were the old Fresh Gear segments, the same eight segments rotated daily for weeks…. 😉 But I digress.
I propose that TechTV and the TSS crew open-source the old openings and theme music (yes, even the old Leo & Kate opening). Give us long-time fans something to remember the old shows by, since we have yet to see repeats of shows older than two months or internet archives of those previous episodes.

  22. I am so mad, my stupid tv company will not give me that channel anymore! >:o grrrrr, It was a good show when I could watch it, and I am sure it will still be good as long as they keep what they have going.

  23. Long live games. May they continue to boost computer sales and advance hardwear well into the future… o ya and checked out the drawings and the movie for new set posted on your site must say doesn’t look to shabby. interesting you moved from the basment to the “Loft”.

  24. Hey Leo!
I really enjoyed meeting you at Gnomedex II. Keep the faith my brother. Don’t worry about the impetus towards ‘more cleavage’ you are a tech messiah. You hold the power. You CAN call the shots, IF you can only recognize the power you hold as UBER Geek. I know it’s hard after MSNBC religated you to Dev/Null. We are your support, and we will follow you. So, “walk away walk away,” we will follow… If that’s how it must be. And it seems like TechTV is more and more like regular tv. Hate it!
    Cheers,
    NoSilver

  25. Leo, you and Patrick make the show not the set! Don’t forget it. Without you both the show just doesn’t work!

  26. While the basement was nice and fit the show in the early days, Im not sad to see it go. I think a new set has been needed for at least a year now…probably since the techlive/cfh set was built. That one is so much nicer to look at.
Time to move on. Isnt that what tech is all about?

  27. I think the new set will look good. I mean…we’ve seen the basement for 4 years now… don’t you think it’s time for change?? What am I saying?? I hate change!!! The only think I don’t think I’ll like is the new Open/theme song. I love this open. I don’t know why the theme song has to be changed…then again, why was it changed when Kate left? Oh well, it might be a good thing. Let’s just wait and see the new set.

  28. I watch the shows on DirecTv and have every since DirecTv started carrying ZDTV network. The show has had it’s ups and downs, but recently, more downs than ups. It really sucks seeing these changes though. The old original shows that ZDTV had was much more informative. I know that Leo is mainly responsable for the creation of TSS and CFH, and did a fine job of it too, but ever since the TechTV people took over they MESSED it up. Has TechTV ever watched the old shows? Or are they too “old” to be watched? Heck – I recently saw an old TSS episode and CFH episode I had recorded and those were the times of Kate & Leo, and it was more educational than today’s shows. Even the older shows can help today’s problems and are more “geek-friendly”, or actually more “user-friendly”. I think that it is time that if the TechTV people are really considering doing a new set, why not then do a new everything? I’m referring to answering tough-juicy-geeky questions about stuff that TSS was originally intended to be. CFH nowadays is also a show without taste – the host is just way too geeky, and in the meanwhile TSS has become a talk show. Wasn’t CFH intended to be for the more common people and beginers, and TSS for the hardcore computer users? What’s up with TechTV? I’m not referring to Leo,or any of the staff, I’m referring to the TechTV executives.

  29. Leo..
We will all miss the basement, but no matter where you guys will be located..the show will be great. Because you all make the show special.

  30. I just got TechTV back after about a year without it. I’ve been watching it on DirecTV ever since Kate and Leo ran things. I had to get digital cable to get it back, then when I tuned in I couldn’t find Leo anywhere. I thought, Oh no, don’t tell me they canned Leo, then I found Patrick’s smiling face and found out Leo was just off on one of his cross country jaunts. I too thought the channel has too much fluff now, but also it has done an admirable job of keeping the doors open after the big old Tech sector flop. Back in the “Good old Days”, big advertising bucks were everywhere but now the bean counters are scrambling. I hope TechTV leaves the hard core computer techys a couple of shows intact. There’s plenty of room for the gamers too.

  31. I can’t speak about the screensavers “days of yore” as people are calling them. I never saw any of the old shows, because I just got satellite a few months ago so I am just finding Tech TV and The Screensavers. I admit I am not really into all the gaming, mainly because I SUCK AT IT! But it’s still fun to learn about all the games. And I even catch myself watching Extended Play. The rest of the show rules. Leo you rock bro! The rest of the crew are all cool too. Geek tv or not, I am proud to watch the Screen Savers. Looking forward to watching the new episodes! Keep it up yall!

  32. I have a great store of TechTV/ZDTV, (mostly ZDTV) graphics, sounds, and videos. It’s a shame that they are just sitting on my hard drive and I can’t share them. I even have both show openings in Quicktime at 320 x 240 and they are beautiful video. I just need a better copy of the audio of the first opening with Kate to reincode the sound on that one to be perfect. I might have that somewhere on VHS. Just gotta look/
Of course in the corporate world trademarks are forever. If someone ever gets permission to have these items posted I’d love to contribute.
Leo let us know if this is ever possible! I’m sure a lot of the old ZDTV and early TechTV fans would love to share this stuff.

  33. I miss the old days of ZDTV, those were great. Call For Help hasn’t changed much since you’ve left it Leo, they do everything you did, with a slightly new flair that Chris brings to the show.
But, TSS on the other hand is completely different. Why? Leo and Pat are great, I like watching the both of you, but the show is completely different because you don’t take calls anymore. It happened over time, but now you normally only take at the most 2 calls, usually just one for Leo’s Boot Camp.
And whatever happened to the Boot Camp intro? Sure, it was cheesy but hey, at least it was something. Almost all of your other segments have sort little intros.

  34. I agree with Leo, both shows have changed a lot recently. CFH is still a good basic help show, but it’s on in the afternoon when a large audience can’t see it because they’re at work. I could do without “Tech of War” endless reruns for a dose of CFH in the evenings.
And the Screensavers has turned into an interview show, with little of “where we solve your toughest computer problems” which they say at the beginning of every show. The tips/tricks segments have been totally replaced by little 10 second snippets before the commercial breaks with the line “more information on our website” line. Totally worthless!! Why even bother?
The best thing about the Screensavers is the fact it’s been Live TV, and things do go wrong when they’re installing software, etc, which happens to all of us, but they miss a great opportunity in not exploiting that fact by finding out WHAT went wrong and explaining what can be done to fix the problem. That in itself would be helpful to the viewers and help us “solve our toughest computer problems”. I will keep watching and supporting TechTV. I am a cable operator, have carried the channel since day one, watch it all the time myself, and have received many great comments from my customers about it. It will STAY on my system!

  35. Well this entry is depressing. Sounds like you are setting us up for bad news from, or about you. Sure hope not. There is lots of change from 1998,and as stated some good, some bad. But more good. The LEO show has matured into a well done and informative production. Even Call for Help still screams LEO. It is sad to see this set go, but, like computer tech, going forward is a must. Can’t wait to see the next phase.

  36. You done good, Leo…. 4 years is an eternity in TV Time… you should be very proud of everything you’ve accomplished there, and I know you are. It’s still fun making live TV for a living, enjoy it and have a ball. You’re the best, basement or no basement.

  37. I also get a sense that things are not alright in Leoville.
In my opinion you are the flagship personality in the TechTV lineup, although i must say that i sorely miss John Dvorak and Silicon Spin.
I would love to see you leave and create another show. I would become a daily addict again if there was just one new show that was fresh and exciting on TechTV.
Why isnt their a Tech Trivia show? or something like Junkyard Wars or Monster Garage for tech?! Yikes, even MTV has an interactive internet driven show.
    best wishes to ya Leo!
    -Roland
