TechTV: It’s What’s Left

Happy Derby Day!
I realized that it’s been too long since I’ve posted here when my mom complained. OK, mom, and the rest of you, here’s what’s up with me.

Mostly I haven’t posted here because I’ve been working on the book. The first 25% was due on Wednesday and I’m far from done. We have a hard deadline of July 15 to get the book into stores in time
for the big back to school selling season.

Also I’m just plain lazy.

Lots of things have happened since my last entry. TechTV laid off another 50 people. We must be down to under 400 employees now. Still huge, but a lot smaller than our peak. Most of the layoffs were on the TechLive side, but The Screen Savers suffered, too. We lost Starr and Fatty Matty, our jibcam operator, a wonderful production assistant, Allison Pickard, and our director, Miriam. Layoffs suck. But I understand the need to save money in the aftermath of the tech crash. I know the people who lost their jobs will do just fine, but I’m going to miss them.

Fortunately, The Screen Savers is as successful as ever. We haven’t received the ratings from April, yet, but rumor has it they’re even stronger than we had hoped. We’re still looking at building a new set in the next few months – it’s about time – and Cat is moving to Call for Help, but otherwise the show won’t change much.

On the home front we’re planning a summer vacation in August in Wyoming’s Grand Tetons. I’m taking a week off now and two weeks in June, but it’s not really vacation. It’s for the book. That and Abby’s Peter Pan performance next week. I need to be around to chauffeur her to the long tech rehearsals between now and then.

I’ve had a good break from all the travelling I did late last year, but it’s about to pick up again. ABC has asked me to do monthly appearances on World News Now, their overnight newscast. I’ll probably go to New York City every other month and tape two at once. Since I can tape on Sunday night for a Monday AM airing, I won’t miss any Screen Savers episodes. I’ll try to squeeze in a Regis appearance while I’m out there, too. That should start in early June.

Patrick and I are going to St Louis in a couple of weeks, then we’re booked for Baltimore and Prince Georges sometime in September, and Lousiville and Birmingham in November. Dates and locations still to be determined.

Let’s see, what else. The goats and lambs are doing great, but they’re not eating the grass on the farm and it’s starting to look like a jungle here, so I’m going to have to break out the weed whacker, high weed mower, and other power tools to duel to the death with the tall green stuff. Abby says we should get a horse, because they eat great quantities of grass. I can’t say neigh, so we’ll probably get one sooner or later.

Well, enough procrastinating. Back to the book. Hope you’re satisfied mom… and everyone else. I’ll blog again soon. Promise.

  1. New set? We want behind the scene pictures!
I hope that you are not off the air for a weeks again for the new set. But I do agree that it needs a major upgrade!

  2. It sounds like you have alot to keep you busy. Best wishes to all who were laid off. I can’t wait to you come to Baltimore.

  3. Whew… busy.
Thanks for updating us. Sounds like a lot is going to be happening… just please please please please please please please please tell me that the new set, whatever it turns out to be, won’t be tied with a new dress code (ie, suits…). Can’t wait to see how World News Now turns out.

  4. Leo, a vacation in Grand Tetons is awesome. I’ve been there several times. Make sure you do the river rafting thing. Patrick and I did the early morning one, where the serve you breakfast on the river, and we saw several bald eagles and things. It was the highlight of the trip.

  5. Leo,
Thanks for filling us in on things.
Enjoy your week off, write that book, and I hope Abby’s play goes well.

  6. Leo,
It’s great to see you blog again! Thanks for all the info!
Baltimore in September huh…Maybe I should go visit my brother for his birthday then. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I haven’t been back home in about 5 and a half years!
    A horse! Wow!
    Good luck on the book!

  7. When are ya coming back to st. louis? I e-mailed you guys a week or so ago, but got no response. I was there last time you came, it was great! Now I know to get there plenty early though!

  8. …but Leo, P. A. is cash rich ($ 568.8 million) after Friday. (Source: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=&ncid=762&e=9&u=/nm/20020503/media_nm/usanetworks_allen__update_1__1)
Surely keeping 50 people on until the tech/media sector rebounds wouldn’t bankrupt him.
I am very happy that the work on the next edition of your book is going along well. My copy of “Poor Leo’s 2002 Computer Almanac” is a very valuable resource for me, as I know your new book will be too.
    With warmest regards,
    Darren.

  9. Uh oh, Mom got after you huh? Thanks Leo’s Mom! I know you must be flat out with the new book (which I am so looking forward to) but I’m still glad you took a few minutes to update us. Hope you post a few pics of the Peter Pan production, would love to see that. Hope rehersals are going well, must be a lot of hard work for both Abby and her parents. Also glad to hear the goats and lambs are doing well. I bumped that thread in Leoville the other day hoping we’d hear something. I know it was touch and go with one of the little lambs when they first came. Will also be looking forward to more info on the new set, hope it’s a warm and cozy as this one is. You did say build so I’m assuming/hoping the TechLive set has been ruled out.
Ok, last but not least, here is my usual obligatory plea for a Boston/Providence appearence. (Saw that coming didn’t you?) Just have to keep our area visible! (And yes I have contacted my cable company requesting said appearence.) Someday Leo, someday!

  10. Hey, Im a first time commenter (is that even a word???) here and I would just like to say im a big “The Screensavers” fan and a Leo fan as well, and techtv is my second favorite channel (the first favorite I will refuse to mention)
Anywhoosit, a new TSS set sounds very cool, even though I love the set that the show is on now, a little change coulden’t hurt very much.
A new 2003 computer almanac sounds great. The only reason that I didn’t get one was that there are only 2 book stores in the area that I live in, one just has books that stink, but they have a good cafe so it makes up for the whole experiance, and the other just didn’t have it, ane will never plan on getting it, or at least thats what they allways say.
And finally Have fun on your vacation and eat, sleep, and be merry.

  11. Hey Leo,
Forget St. Louis and come to Houston! I know many a nerd (not excluding my self ๐Ÿ™‚ ) That would love to see you. I’m a transplanted Californian and would love to see another fellow Californian here ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. leo ive been watching ya show.for a long time now.first time i watched screensavers i never used a pc b4. didnt know anything about them now i build custum pc,s i love it. thanks for teaching us. and haveing a very informative show

  13. Glad to see ya back bloggin’! Wyoming is SOOO beautiful! I went trout fishing up there 9 years ago. We were near the Wind River Indian Reservation, in a little town called Dubois. We hiked 11 miles into the mountains and stayed a week. AWESOME stuff! Except for that whole bear incident… not us, but some people we met up there were harrassed by a cinnamon-colored black bear they SWORE was a grizzly. They’re lucky it wasn’t…
    Have fun!

  14. Great to hear that your mom got on you, at least for us anyway…
Also good to hear that MD is on the list, thats a short drive from NC, if you what to call 5 hrs. short, but close enough, KY is closer just harder to get to. Also good news on the ABC thing. BUSY aren’t you. Is there any time left for you to fit in, I bet not… Have fun and I enjoy all that you do. Keep up the GREAT work Leo. Thanks!@!.

  15. Great to read about your planned monthly appearances on ABC’s “World News Now;” I’ll now reconsider ABC as a news source, with you involved there.
Yes, get a horse. Get two. In no time at all, you’ll be hauling alfalfa bales and wondering whatever in the world growing green grass looked like in your far-off memories of the long disappeared field. Plus, the horses will love you for providing for them.
That trip to the Grand Tetons will be good practice for the equestrian plans, too. I highly recommend the town of Moose (which has nothing to do with your equestrian plans on paper, but there’s many a nice pony housed there, and lots of folks who love them, and moose, too).

  16. I love TechTv….I’m a faithful watcher of many shows. Leo, you seem to be involved in everything about TechTV…Great Job !!!!!. You have given me many laughs and much information. I can relate with you with many things that don’t do exactly like they are supposed to, and like the way you guys just say…oh well…that’s the way it’s supposed to work…HEHE. Keep it coming…a faithful watcher…I’ve been doing the computer thing since 1991…Cheers!!! Chowderchops

  17. I’ve been watching TSS for a very long time now, however, this is my first post on your website. But either way, i would really love for you to come and do a show in NYC. Im also awaiting the new Poor Leos ALmanac!!! I cant wait~!~#!@# lol, Ill be sure to buy it ASAP! Oh and….i would also like to say Megans adorable. Im also a big fan of hers.

  18. Wow, you blogged, how neat! (Thnaks Leo’s Mom!) Good Luck Leo, on the new book, I’ll pre-order it from Amazon as soon as the ink is dry. :^)
Thanks for keeping us up to date on your many up-coming appearances, I’d love to see you in Baltimore! I hope you can plan your trip around an Oriole game, Camden Yards is a pretty nice ball park.
I got a trip planned for NYC for late June, so, please, don’t come to Baltimore until July, OK? :^) I got tix to go see Alan Rickman in “Private Lives;” but just let me know if you’ll be wearing a kilt at the Baltimore Comp USA and I’ll scalp those theater tix in a NY minute!
    Happy travels, happy Summer,
    EB

  19. Hey Leo waz up? I’m a middle aged guy (reborn digital out of an analog gen). I really like TSS,I always watch or tape and watch later. Have learned alot from you guys. I can see why the TSS ratings are so good after watching the month of April. Not a bad show in the lot. See ya on the next episode.
ps..my wife used to raise goats. (we live on a farm in the Mo. Ozarks, log home and all)

  20. Hey Leo,
We live in the same hood as you folks. At least in the same beautiful town. We were hoping to see you at the “Butter and Egg Festival.” Would’ve loved to see you and the troops there! Would’ve had you autograph an egg! (I am not kidding–there was a Butter and Egg Fest two weeks ago).
On a not-so-tech note, any advice for keeping the local animals, bats, lizards, etc. out of our house? We’ve got a virtual wild kingdom moving in whenever we open a door. Do you guys have the same problems?
    Tootles.

  21. Hey Leo
What new set for the screen savers YEEAWW.I am a screen savers junkie
I love the show. Its also sad to hear about the lay offs at TECHTV.Well
tech tv be changing there format for any other shows.I was watching your
video HOW TO SOLVE YOUR COMPUTER PROBLEMS.I noticed that you and Patrick
looked younger a few years ago.I loved the video I am hopeing to find the
other TSS video HOW TO BULID YOUR OWN PC.Take care……….

  22. Come back Leo,,,,,,,The twisted lisper belongs behind the scenes !! not in front of a cam ๐Ÿ™
he cant hold his own, let alone repalce you!
keep up the good work ๐Ÿ™‚ :))

  23. why can’t they fire an executive instead of the lowly employees. but, that might make sense then. anyhow, i wish you would visit delaware . maryland is too far away.

  24. Hey Leo!
I’m glad you finally made an entry in your blog. I can imagine how busy you are so I understand. Say thanks to your mom for me for bugging you to make an entry in your blog. I hope everyone has a great time in St. Louis!
An appearance on ABC sounds great! I’ll have to see when WNN is on now… and I bet a horse would solve your vegetation problem pretty well…
I’ll keep watching TSS too see when and if you’ll be on with Regis. I haven’t had a chance to see you on Regis and Kelly yet.
I like the new way TechTV does the words at the bottom of the screen. You know, the name of the guest that is speaking… The new blue transparent one is much much better than the old black and green one with the circle pattern…
I’m very excited about the new set! The one you are using now is so… basement-like and scummy… I think a more futuristic one would be much better. I think the new set might even raise your ratings. You should do a computer generated set!
Best of luck to Abby! Enjoy your week off!
    Sincerely,
    iWatch
P.S. I’m sorry about the layoffs. Layoffs stink…

  26. This might not be the place to post this. Why waste the money on a new set, that is such a small part of the show, content is where it is. Just move a few things around, new camera angles, hang different stuff on the walls, new tables, little stuff. The production value has suffered a lot lately such as the camera not following where the action is when it should be focused on the screen. Leo can cover it but Meghan and Marty look like someone is being killed with a chain saw on the other side of the camera Also the hosts looking at the wrong camera, very amaturish which is not their fault since it is someoneโ€™s job to tell them where to look. Oh well this does not mean I will not watch the show anymore. I will be there.

  27. Leo,
PLEASE BRING MEAGAN TO BIRMINGHAM I WANT TO MEET HER . I LOVE THE SHOW .
I AM A TEEN GEEK AND YOU ARE MY HEROS. I LOVE YOU MEAGAN. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  28. I hope you mean Birmingham, AL in November, Leo. That is great news to this long time fan. It is my hometown, and I am only a 1.5 hour drive from there now. I look forward to reading the details.

  29. Leo,
Life does go on, doesn’t it? Glad to see a blog from you again, even if I’m not your mom.
Let us know how Abby’s play goes… wish I could see it in person.

  30. The Tetons are great, I was out there a few years ago, remind me to look up the stuff I have on it and bring some for you when I come to SF, nevermind I’ll write myself a note.

  31. Leo, you’re coming to Louisville, KY?! I can’t wait! I’ll DEFINITELY be there! And happy Derby day to you, too! I went to a party but I didn’t win any money. Oh well, it was fun anyway! ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. thanks for finnally posting… does anyone know of a free perl script for changing rss files into html without the use of the XML-RSS module?
If so post it in my blog comments, my forums, ut it in my guestbook, or email it to me at http://brianopp.no-ip.com

  33. WOO!! A new blog! Im a tad slow OK?? Can’t wait for the new book, I cheated and read all the way through it! I am contemplating either sending in VIA mail for personal “Leo Hancock”, or trekking from NC to one of the places of appearance. Any idea whom from TSS will be covering DefCon this year? I cornered Patrick last year for some great conversation, maybe you will join in festivities this year? Or leave the scary folks to Patrick?
Can’t wait for the new book release!
