Burn the Candle, Baby

I had a great, but exhausting, time in Chicago. I spent all day Monday and Tuesday teaching cable executives how to burn their own CDs. They were VERY interested. I hope it inspires some of them to put TechTV on their systems!
The hotel did not, as it turns out, have high speed Internet access, so I was blog and boardless for two days. Probably not a bad thing.

I will be off tomorrow (Friday). Patrick is taping segments for a Screen Savers video cassette we’re doing. I do have to work tomorrow, though. Just not on TV. I’m on a panel on Media Product Reviews at the Techmart in Santa Clara. I have to be there by 8:30a, so I have to leave home about 5:30 or 6a. -gack-

Then Saturday the car comes at 4a to pick up the kids and me to fly to Providence. I’m dropping them off there then flying to Philly on one of those scary puddle jumpers for the speech on Sunday. Then it’s back to Providence to spend time with my mom and my sister and her new baby. I’ll be back on The Screen Savers on Monday, June 25.

Speaking of the speech on Sunday, the room only holds 300-400 people and we’ve registered more than 800. They’ve closed registration, but I’m hoping we can figure out a way to accomodate more people. They’re telling people to go ahead and show up at the door on Sunday. I’d bet that’s because many people who register don’t attend. I promise I’ll do my best to talk with everybody, even if we have to meet in the parking lot!

  1. Did Leo go see a Cubs game while he was in Chicago? I sure wish I could, it’s too bad that I live in Vegas!!!

  2. Read between the lines. Leo’s not getting a vaction. His wife is getting one! Probably well deserved too.

  3. Great time…Was funny when you had to come and fix the projector. Really enjoyed both seminars. Hope your Father’s Day and Vacation is great!

  4. Leo and Patrick:
Thank you both for appearing in Cherry Hill, NJ today.
The conference/seminar was great, and provided me a great father’s day to remember for a long time to come.
Please try and bring TSS show back to the Philly area, and book a bigger place.
Next trip I promise you a real Philly Cheese Steak, and not one of those “Joisey” knock offs.
    Reagards,
    Jim

  5. Leo, leo, leo…you have nothing to complain about…getting up at 6a..
I run a camera (and sometimes teleprompter) for the local tv station’s morning news…I have to get up at 4 AM, report to work at 5AM, then do an hour show….
Usually I have to work the late night show the day before, so by about 9a, I’m ready for a nap….

  6. Take a look at the Pix page…for the at home pick is Mr. Laporte:
    A) Getting up.
    B) Sitting down.
    C) Cowboy Neal.
People who answer A are optimists, people who answer B are pessimists, and people who answer C need to get out more.

  19. Safe travels and a happy return!
As for the video cassette, I want the DVD, with the extra 9 gigs of the Director’s Cut and interviews with all the cast/crew and the alternate ending to the “Night the Light’s Went Out” Episode (the lost episode of the Screen Savers) plus stills of Leo in every Hawaiian shirt he’s ever worn, and the lyrics to the theme from the old Call For Help…. and the letterboxed edition of the show dubbed into French, plus Martin Sargent reading the unabridged version of Melville’s Moby ****.
    :^)
Ok, I’ll settle for the VHS, sign me up for one.
    :^)

  20. Hey Leo,
I DO remember “Abergavenny!” It was a song by “Shannon” way back when, and I’ll admit to having an appreciation for it!
For fun and education, do a Google search on Abergavenny, and you’ll find tons of interesting information — it’s in South Wales, UK.
Do a search for the song Abergavenny at CDNow, and you’ll find at least one album you could purchase that includes the song…
I haven’t heard that song in DECADES! Thanks for bringing a pleasant memory to mind!
Take care and good luck with your upcoming travels!

  21. Every married man knows their wives intentionally run out of toilet paper and other necessities at odd hours to test your devotion and joy quotient. at times it seems like sheer madness, but I think there are just so many things to remember that it only seems like it at the time. You guys had to eat some crow with UGM 3.0 the other day. I almost followed your lead one day too, but at the last minute I decided to wait. I may do it in a couple of months, it’s just amazing what crops up that needs to be taken care of. have a great vacation Leo.

  22. Hey Leo!
Just surfing by, I loved the stove. You know I haven’t had one for fifteen years.
My computer has been in disarray for about a week; I put in a new 60 Gig hard drive. I thought that would solve all my problems. Nope! Hard drive worked great but everything else quit. I wound up reinstalling everything about 40 times. I think I finally figured it out; networks and computers never work the way we think they are supposed too.
I took a look at the Austin Boyz pics while I was here, posted there too four times by mistake. Nothing happens when you click submit dude! Looked through some of the other comments and I was glad to see I was not the only one with that problem. Remember “We don’t have problems; we just have projects.”
I never got my T-shirt for my birthday, remember from the patio at the Hyatt? How long does it usually take? I keep waiting… what happened? The Intel building still isn’t finished either! I just keep waiting…
Now we expect to see that new tie you get for father’s day on TV next week!
Same Tech Time, Same Tech Channel!
    Later,
    Kim

  23. Leo, in case you wanted to know: TechTV started to advertise on a local radio station in Philadelphia: KYW 1060. This station is heard throughout the Phila. area and South Jersey — where you’ll be coming on Sunday. This is a news station that gives up-to-the-minute-news as well as traffic reports for Phila. and South Jersey. This is the first time I’ve heard any advertisements for TechTV in this area. (Job security? not that you need it with them)
And in case you didn’t know, South Jersey roots for Phila. teams, i.e., 76ers, Flyers, Eagles, and Phillies; unlike where Patrick comes from, that root for New Jersey Devils. South Jersey, for the most part, couldn’t care less for the Devils or any team that plays in North Jersey.
I’m sorry that Comcast Cable couldn’t plan ahead. The last time you were in our area, hundreds, if not thousands, of people came to see you and Patrick. They should have known when they planned this seminar that a room that only holds 300 to 400 people wouldn’t be enough. It doesn’t surprise me, though, being one of their customers for cable TV as well as @home cable and having had to deal with their “representatives.”
I was really looking forward to hearing what you and Patrick had to say; however, I was too late to sign up for the seminar. I’ll know better next time.
I know you and Patrick are telling people to attend anyway and you’ll make room for us, but I don’t have the same confidence as you that I’ll be able to get in.
I know your last trip to this area — at least I think I know — was not as good as it could have been. I hope Sunday will be much better for you. For your sake I was hoping you would be bringing your family so that you could go down to Ocean City, NJ, and go on the boardwalk and visit the South Jersey shore, which is completely different than in California. But I read that you’re coming alone. Maybe next time.
    Good luck tomorrow.

  24. WooHoo, Yay! Hi Leo, my husband and I drove from NY to see you and Patrick in Cherry Hill. It was great to see y’all live and in person. I am really impressed that you drove from Providence and were on time! We barely made it in that rain.
Both of your speeches were great – Very informative. I especially liked how you related the internet boom and gloom to previous inventions (radio, steam engine) that took a few generations to stabilize and find a more useful purpose. That really helped to put the internet into perspective. I was impressed by the questions asked by the audience. It’s great to be around people who are very aware of the technology. Geeks rule. ๐Ÿ˜‰
One thing that I do regret is that I forgot to tell you to have a Happy Father’s Day when you were signing autographs. So… HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! ๐Ÿ™‚
I’d write more, but I’m beat, we just got back home from spending the rest of the day in Philly. Please, have a safe trip and enjoy your well deserved vacation!
    -ALi G.
p.s. I’m glad to have found out that you like MST3K! It just goes to show how cool you are. Okay, I’ll turn ‘happy fan-girl mode’ off for now. ;>

  25. Hey Leo,
I hope that you enjoy your vacation. With your schedule, you REALLY need one! Just for the record, I’d like to say that I think you are the coolest, smartest person on television, if not the entire world. It is the best part of the day when I am watchin TSS. I especially like it when you mention something related to “The Hobbit” or “The Lord of the Rings!”
    -Matt (a.k.a. Gollum)

  26. Yo Leo, was great to see you in our neck of the woods earlier today. It’s nice to know that unlike most media icons today, you truly are the awesome person we see on techtv. The seminars were great, simple enough for non-techies while still interesting for those of us with more experience. Thanks for the autograph and the feast of hot dogs ๐Ÿ™‚
    -mike

  27. We’ll you should come to Columbus, Ohio. They said last night on the news that we are the 6th largest broadband city in the USA. I believe it, since every person I know has Cable modems…except my mom, she lives in the country surfing at 28.8k, lol.

  28. Leo,
The seminars where a blast! I’m glad I got to see you and Patrick there! I know you may not remember everyone from there but I’m one sons of the guy’s camera you checked out before everything got started! (The one where the picture didn’t come out). Anyway, come back to NJ soon! We loved having you guys here!

  29. Hi Leo,
While your in New Jersey and the TriState area can you PLEASE get Cablevision to show TechTV? Were talking about one of the biggest outlets in the country and you can tell them all the geek stuff on the channel will help sell their Optimum Online Cable Modem Service!! See ya next time you visit the Jersey Shore. Have a happy safe trip!
    Mark (Jackson NJ)
