  1. Hello,Leo
I enjoy the web site and your tv show The Screen Savers. And call for help when you do the Mac Tip of the day. I have a 1 ghz chip but over clocked it too 2 ghz. I got a Big heat sink on it It’s Intel P4 Chip Running Linux 8.0 Dual booted with Bsd,Windows 2000, I can see if you have other os on it like me.
but if your going to just have a single system web surfing thats it you dont need a big chip. My question is that i have a big system My hard disk are UDMA 66 Do you think i would get more faster speeds out of a scsi hard disk?
I have a big tape drive 66 Gb could i just copy all of the hard disk info.
to the tape disk and run from that or do i need too stick with the Hard Disk?

  4. Man, I can’t believe the arrogance of this guy!!!! Intel is the most overpriced junk on the computer market. AMD is far less expensive and much better to deal with. Intel is really an evil corporation that just wants suckers to pay for the latest and greatest. I certainly won’t be giving them my hard-earned cash ever!! -=- By the way, Leo, you should have asked him about the decision to use RAMBUS – Oh, yeah, that was clever!?!

  5. Ah, what does he know. I think you’ve sofar got a point Leo. Our computers can’t even use 2 GHz, much less 1. (I could be wrong so please bear with me)
(I’m not A+ surtified yet, nor can I spell)
    Who couldn’t like Leo!
You’r not ignorant, in fact, you and Martin could head over there and put something there, something that could torch all of those chips and leave no evidence that you were there. (Don’t forget to pull some of Martin’s April Fools Jokes)
Yes, I’m talking of our own Deep fat Fryer!!!!!!!
    FAX!!!!! ZILLLA!!!!!! :-p
    (Don’t feel jealous Patrick)
I’ll bet you could run circles around that president anyway Leo.
    Night!

  6. Well he was semi-correct and Leo was sem-correct. Right now with the types of OS and software people use nobody needs a 2.0 ghz processor. I mean my 1.0ghz(which is at 1.2) barely gets used until I start running a video capture program AND encoding mp3s AND running Outlook while using Win2k.
Having a 2.0 ghz right now would just be for bragging rights. Like haha we got our 2.0 ghz and you’re stuck with your puny 700 mhz. On Tom’s hardware there was an article about a 1.33 Athlon OCed to 2.1x a few weeks ago. Well I’m in this overclocking group on campus and we were shooting for around 1.8 but now we’re hoping for 2.2. Why? Because we want to be noticed(So notice us Leo, please).
So yeah every 18 year old on the planet wants a 2 ghz processor but they really can’t use it.

  7. [Sorry for 3 consecutive posts.]
And by the way, even when Intel DOES hit 2 Ghz they’ll have barely reached parity with Athlon 1.5 Ghz performance:
    http://www.pcworld.com/news/article.asp?aid=38962
“However, AMD is likely to keep its lead in actual performance for some time, he said. Right now, a PC running a 1.1-GHz Athlon with standard PC133 SDRAM will outperform one with a 1.5-GHz P4 with RDRAM on most benchmarks, he said.
Systems using the P4 probably won’t outperform Athlon-based systems on most benchmarks until the second half of this year, when the P4 hits 2 GHz and the Athlon is stretched at 1.5 GHz, he said.”

  8. Hey Leo…I am diehard fan of yours…But…Please loose the jokes during the monolouge on the TSS…It appears they are scripted (not very well)…If I (we) want to laugh, I’d tune to the cnbc and watch my portfolio dissappear…See what I mean…I’ve lost my sense of humor listening to those cheezy jokes in the TSS monolouge…I can’t spell by the way either Leo…thats not your fault….CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT…WE CRAVE TSS CONTENT..I ABSORB EVERYTHING COMPUTER…And please even with the new 1 1/2 show..interested segments are ended with “sorry we’ve run out of time”….noooo let them go brother..let them go til the guest has nothing left to say..Frankly Leo I would like to see any segment involving a guest end in a staring match! And finally..Please install a cam on Megan and Jessie during the show..Why…Do you have to ask. Woooo Woooo……Yours Truly, Paul Ellen Sculkin Ventures

  9. I thought the geek segment from last night’s show was one of the funniest things you’ve ever done. You and Patrick should have joined in. It was hilarious. I didn’t think you guys would get many entries, so I’m not surprised. Before the news was out it sounded like Jessica was trying to weasel out of her promise to date the winner. What ever happened to being a team player? The girls are funny and I have a feeling that they will grow with the show. They might be a little camera shy now, but as time goes on they will get their feet wet. I’m tempted to go by the Salvation Army and send them both some clothes. Martin was terrific. I enjoyed his list segment as well. As for Patrick, we all like him, he’s a natural next to you on the air. Some say Martin would have been good there, but you can’t have two funny men running the show. Not that Patrick isn’t funny, he is just more sedate and his antics complement yours better I think. I don’t think I am going to vote. The winner is supposed to date Jessica after all, and she’ll probably end up on a date with herself. I was right with Patrick on the last guy. I don’t know his name but when he spilled his guts I lost it. Look at the time, you’re already on and I’ve missed part of the show. It’s good to know I can catch the rerun!

  10. Jason, I almost entirely agree with you, but you’ve intentionally missed the point. I think Leo gave a SOFTBALL question to Barrett, one that he should ahve hit out of the park with an answer much like yours!
Instead the best this giant CEO comes up with is “you’re too old to understand”?? How stupid.
And yes, Leo is asking on behalf of the great unwashed masses; like I said it’s a softball, EASY question to answer. As I wrote above, “People have been asking Intel that question since the 80286 came out, and if they can’t come up with a standard polite answer (without personal attacks!) based on current and future perceived market needs, then they are dumber than I thought.”
Who needs 2 Ghz? You will, when such and such comes out, or to perform this or that, in a world-changing way as time goes on, etc. To just say “a teenager needing more frames in Quake 3 would understand” is kind of ridiculous. Barrett’s certainly not earning his bloated salary with an interview answer like that.
Besides, he’s barely keeping up with “slower” Mhz AMD offerings anyway.
    — Brandon

  11. Leo,
I agree with you. I have an AMD Athlon 1.1G and I can’t see how I’d need anything faster than that! I think he is just jealous that you have such a fun job, that you know your stuff, and that you have more devoted fans than he has! 😉 BTW, middle aged is not a bad thing…Isn’t it the middle of an Oreo cookie that’s the best part anyway? ANd just because your hair is grey is not a bad thing. I’ve had streaks of grey since I was 16! (It’s just gotten a lot more since then!) LOL

  12. Blog is short for web log. I also have one (inspired partly by Leo’s blog) as do a couple friends of mine. It’s a great way to let people see what I do everyday.
Leo, I really enjoyed Patrick’s interview with you tonight. That was funny to see old videos of you! Very cool feature. Now, you should interview other people on the show (Martin, Jess, etc.)
Happy anniversary to you and your wife (soon)! 🙂
    Take care,
    Jeff Pollard

  13. Let’s take a quick vote here, Leo.
Who here has heard Craig Barrett review products other than his own? Who here has seen him smile on TV?
Okay now…who here digs it when Leo speaks his mind? Who here appreciates an honest comment or two in a review…something you can’t read in a manual?
I’m for the latter. That’s why I watch TechTV. I could care less about the newest gadgets and devices if I couldn’t have personal insight from non-biased reviewers.
Actually, the bias you all have is a good one…it’s the “Hey, I’d like to spend my $700 on something cool that works” bias. I’m a subscriber too! 🙂
Hang in there, Leo. And remember- Negative (or neutral) publicity is still publicity. You still appear to be having fun on the show, so don’t let him stop you. Somehow I doubt he gets to do half of the cool stuff you all do on camera.
    Big fan, fellow Blogger,
    Brian 🙂

  14. Leo where did Mr. (I use the term loosely) Barrett’s comments appear?
Middle aged…….. I think he meant to say distinguished reporter from Tech TV 😉
How about a segment on running dual boot/operating systems and how to set them up esp. Win98 and Win2k. I’ve followed you and the gang from day one Leo and I’m now ready to put my second PC together and I want to use dual booting etc…..
    Take care
    Ian

  15. Maybe you should have a poll at TechTV as to which one the “consumers” woud rather turn to for help and advice. Then send him the results. Or maybe a question like – “Which one would you buy a used car from?” It sounds like he is full of sour grapes. We all know you are the BEST, Leo.

  16. i agree with leo totally ……….
he sums everything up in one sentence(surprisingly!!) 😛
what is the need for intel speed andf how much is enough already ??
    dave

  17. What a jerk. People have been asking Intel that question since the 80286 came out, and if they can’t come up with a standard polite answer (without personal attacks!) based on current and future perceived market needs, then they are dumber than I thought.
Try asking the question of AMD, since the way things are going they’re more likely be shipping it first anyway…
    — Brandon

  18. Don’t take it take it too hard…at least you haven’t worn Jello as a hat (Comdex)…unless you have…then ignore this comment…
Also, am I wrong, but was there a naked pic of Pat on Monday’s SS?

  19. AMD is so much better than Intel. I am forced to use mostly Intel during the day, and when I get home, it is amazing how much faster my AMD Athlon 700 is!
    INTEL SHOULD JUST GIVE UP!!!
    BUY AMD!!!

  20. I remember people saying we’d never need anything faster than a sinclair….. Go figure….. If they build it we’ll find a way to max it out…. eg. Hard Drives, memory, etc, etc… 😉
    Ian

  21. My thoughts of Mr. Barrett, in the words of my immortal hero, Foghorn Leghorn: “Sounds like a schnook, loud mouth that is!”
    Cheryl

  22. Yeah your right Leo, who really needs a 2 GHz chip? I certainly don’t-600 Mhz is great for me, but then again, I don’t do any graphics editing or movies or anything so maybe if I did, I might need a faster processer.
    Eric

  23. Mr. Barrett has some IT department he can whine to when “he can’t print”, or “cant see the internet”.
Leo’s a real man; he can fix it himself.

  24. Would someone please tell me what Blog means and is? And I wouldn’t watch tech tv if Leo wasn’t there. He’s the only host that has the skills to teach and be funny at the same time. Your very entertaining and intelligent Leo…Don’t let anyone make you feel different!

  25. Leo must have gotten under his skin! 🙂 That and the underlying fact that AMD is ready to stomp a mud hole in Intel’s future.
2GHZ…just keeping up with the Jones family eh? : )
    -Don

  26. Guess he does watch! How many times did you “joke” on air that the AMD was just as good and cheaper! That was a joke right? No? Guess he has no sense of humor.

  27. Intel has gone down lately. AMD made the processor [I believe] in the PC I use. Plus, Craig B. looks like an old fogey. Last, as of the day I wrote this, Brandon said his name is not Clark 13 times! So to the whole world, DON’T CONFUSE THEM WITH EACH OTHER!

  28. By the way, the people who need this chip are gamers in about 20 months. I’ll buy mine then when the cost is around $150. 😉
    pjk

  29. Hey Leo.
Kind of off subject. But is it true you truly dislike Windows/Microsoft? Im hearing it from alot of sides.
Say it aint so Leo, say it aint so. :-/
And his comments are all another reason I work for AMD

  30. hey leo, why not use some of your liquid capitol and start a chip company to smash intel into oblivion? i’d buy some leo2/300mghz in a heartbeat!! how ’bout all you other interpid bloggers?

  31. I guess he is too touchy since AMD has a better product these days Leo. He aint getting my bucks anymore.
Keep up the fight Leo, we need you in our corner !!!!!

  32. I was interviewing him on TechLive this morning. I’m sure he meant it as a joke, but it did seem a little thin skinned! He said, no 18 year old would ask that question. They know that they need 2 Ghz. Yeah right!

  33. Your middle aged? i just thought it was hair dye.
no one needs a 2GHZ processor. that is ludicossity(hehe) i mean ludicrous. i have a 800GHZ and it is plenty fast.
    rick

  34. Leo, hopefully your remark will not turn out to be like Bill Gates deciding that 640kb of RAM is enough memory for anybody.
    -Mike Streeter

  35. You go leo.. I think that intel guy is just affriad of what you have to say because you speak the truth. Keep it up..

  36. A man who uses belittlement as a form of response is merely hiding the fact that his error is so large.

    “The reason I’m a tech one word…Leo.”

  37. Did he call you this in person or in writing or on the phone? It does sound like you touched a nerve there. WTG!

  38. I love Leo to death, but the comment “Who needs 2Ghz” is just a very ignorant comment. It’s like “Who would want this ‘PC’ thing in the home” years back. Or “Who needs more than a 50MB hard drive”.
Of course word processing doesn’t need more power. However, we shouldn’t have to wait for ANYTHING on our computers. When you use your microwave, would you like it if you had to wait several seconds after each button you pressed to be processed? Of course not. And computers should be the same way – and will be soon. When we get to that point, people can complain why do we need more.
But even at 1.5Ghz, computers just aren’t cutting it. And as applications get more complicated, we’ll need even more. Today we can do things with computers that you simply couldn’t do with a 486. The way we view a computer today is different than we did a 486. Why do we need more than 256 color screens? Well, because at the time it probably seemed enough, but today we can really do so much more with a high color output and it changes the whole feel of the computer because of all the things that came with high color.
Just like this, the way we’ll view our computer and they TYPES of things we’ll be doing with extreme ease will change. Many things we do manually can be automatically handled by the OS because of the processing power available to determine what course it should take in an event instead of asking for user input. Just as Voice Recognition is possible with enough power, so will be MANY more things that are simply taken care of in the background by the computer.
When people begin to understand what the advancement of MicroChips as well as the overall performance of all devices in the system that contribute to the ability of the system can do to how computers work, then we wouldn’t have people asking “Who needs 2Ghz”.
Leo, you should know better. And I’m sure you do. I also know that such a comment you ask is purely because you’re on air with many of your viewers being newbies that mainly use little things like Word Processors and the such, and you’re ‘asking on their behalf’. But you’re influencing people to beleive we don’t need the extra power and with that attitude, nothing will advance and computers will always be as bad and ‘dumb’ as they are today.
    Jason
